The Second Coming is imminent. Aziraphale and Crowley, naturally, spend four days and three nights at a motel in Palm Springs dealing with their own issues.

    Summary

“Hello?” said Aziraphale, stepping into the flat.

Crowley hadn’t come to the door when he knocked, which wasn’t entirely surprising given that he didn’t know Aziraphale was popping by. In fairness, neither had Aziraphale until a half-hour ago, hemming and hawing before deciding that a little spontaneity never hurt anyone, actually, six millennia of being the least spontaneous creature in all of existence notwithstanding.

“Crowley?” he ventured again, beginning to feel a bit foolish. With a twinge, it occurred to him that Crowley might have a prior engagement, one that didn’t involve him. “Are you home?”

There came a muted thud from down the hallway.

Aziraphale couldn’t say how it happened. Some residual impulsivity from his trip over, perhaps, or a vague sense of concern, or the morbid and wholly inappropriate desire to see the interior of Crowley’s bedroom. No matter the reason, he found himself moving in that direction, rounding the corner—

“Good heavens,” he said, stopping short.

    Summary

    Soho, 1800.

“Did they say why?” said Crowley.

“Change of plans,” Aziraphale replied around a mouthful of chocolate. “I’m apparently needed here, in the bookshop. Battling the, ah.” He swallowed, looking away. “The forces of evil, and what have you.”

“Hungry work,” Crowley said solemnly, offering up the chocolate tin again.

Aziraphale feigned indecision for only a moment, practically wiggling as he leaned in to inspect the array of sweet morsels. “I really shouldn’t,” he said, selecting one from the middle. Crowley watched from behind the relative safety of his glasses, unblinking, as the angel took a bite.

An amazingly colourful illustration inspired by Magdalena Bay's Killshot with some elements symbolizing the ineffables.
