It’s almost funny. How deeply Hannibal wishes to be known. How deeply Will wishes to remain unknown. Perhaps it’s because Hannibal has come to terms with who he is. Maybe Will is still fighting himself. Maybe he’s so used to being misunderstood and misused that there isn’t a genuine bit of him left to understand.
Perhaps the most difficult part about all this manipulative obfuscation is realizing at least some of it is honest. He swallows hard and continues. “Achilles wished all Greeks would die so that he and Patroclus could conquer Troy alone.”
Hannibal laughs, a windy sort of laugh, and it makes Will want to smile. “So often, I find that people forget that Patroclus is just as much a warrior as Achilles. Tell me Will, do you believe Patroclus wished for the same?”
“I do,” he says, and the sincerity in his own voice is startling.
