“Now, that would have been an interesting tidbit to list in your qualifications.” He grins, brandishing her resumé; when the joke falls utterly flat, his grin falters into something more pathetic. “The charismatics do tend to get carried away, don’t they.”
In the year 2000, Harrow gets a job at John Gaius's church, meets his handsome and pious daughter, and things go to Hell in a handbasket.

Muffled and close, like sitting in her bed at home with the curtains drawn all round, even as they traverse the twisted hallways of Canaan House. Like everything outside of them, outside the sphere of space encompassing their bodies walking abreast, exists in some other reality to the one where Gideon’s lips touched her glabella. Where Gideon’s robes brush hers now as they move. Where Gideon’s hand, still chilled from the water, finds Harrowhark’s just long enough to tug her off course.
“Our rooms are this way,” Harrow protests.
Gideon tugs again, lightly, before releasing her. “I’m hungry.”

She paces to the edge of the arena–not close enough to present any real danger of teetering over, like Stevonnie had that one time they were too caught up in all the things Steven couldn’t say to see the ground slipping out from beneath them—but close enough to see the clouds glimmering pink around her, to see the Earth, far below in the distance. “Do you know anything about comic books, Pearl?”

It’s only barely sealed, stuck down in the center; she slips a finger underneath and pops it open. Pulls out a piece of yellow notebook paper and a photocopy sheet, folded hastily together. The copy is a picture. A group shot, a graduation, caps and gowns. And grinning out from under one of the caps—Pearl.
A ghost. Three ghosts, and she can’t take her eyes off them, even long enough to flail for a chair. Pearl, and Garnet, and Rose.
