He increasingly felt both older and younger than he ever had. ‘Shall I keep my terms of endearment until after lunch, in future?’ They had never used anything resembling endearments, before. He could get a little drunk on them, he was now realising – especially if one simple compliment could have Thaniel looking like this.

Summary
January should have seen it coming. On Tharsis, all marriages came to an end five years after they began.
He had forgotten, but their marriage was basically a pas de deux. Two people walked onstage, the music swelled, and they did a dance for the benefit of the audience. The dancers were skilled, the dance was beautiful, and for a moment, under the lights, the stage and the audience fell away. In the end, though, the song ended and the dancers went back to their separate places, marked out in masking tape on the stage.
Five years after the end of the story, the Gale-Stirling marriage of convenience comes to its scheduled end. Meanwhile, politics continue to happen.
