The other witch rolled her eyes, “Yes dear, you went on at length about it. Now go on, you were telling me what Mildred and her friends performed for the pageant.” An encouraging grin accompanied the blonde witch combing through her hair and magicing herself into a comfortable nightgown.
Hecate gulped for entirely unrelated reasons, obviously. She might as well say it, she mused, it would make Pippa laugh and she did so enjoy the sound when it was genuine and not at her expense.

Hecate and Pippa have a chat after the birthday pageant, there are cute and happy moments to be drawn out and recounted, but the worry of Miss Cackle's trial the next day looms.

Rumi’s mind wanders, desperate for a change of subject. Her gaze lands on the two women who’ve been repeatedly plaguing her mind ever since she saw them step out of the limousine. Mira grins and sips on her drink, listening intently to whatever Zoey’s saying, the shorter girl gesticulating her hands wildly in the air. An ache settles in Rumi’s sternum, and that thought, that possibility—the possibility that this show can actually work—rattles through her skull.
“Hey, Celine?” she starts, not looking away from the view ahead of her. “I know it’s unconventional, but can I give out two First Impression Roses?”
Celine considers her words and follows her gaze. She presses her lips into a thin line, then she shrugs in acceptance. “Sure. After all, you’re the Bachelorette.”

Finally, Zoey blurted it out, voice soft but sharp:
“Have you ever thought of… something besides monogamy?”
Mira’s thumb stilled on the screen. She looked up, slow. “…What?”
Zoey’s hands twisted in her lap. “Like—not open relationships. Just… not just one person. Have you ever thought about being with more than one person and it still being okay?”
She wasn’t looking at Mira. Her voice was tight, like it hurt to speak. Mira watched her with a furrowed brow, still quiet.
“I feel so guilty all the time. Because I love you, Mira. I love you, and this doesn’t change that, but I see her and I want to make her smile and I want her to hold my hand and I think she’s beautiful and weird and sweet and I—”
She finally looked up, tears shining in her eyes.
“I think I ruined us. And I’m so sorry.”
Mira just stared at her. Wide-eyed. Silent.
Zoey’s heart dropped. “Say something.”
Mira exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for a month.
Then she visibly deflated—shoulders dropping, head tilting back against the wall—and let out a quiet, choked laugh.
“…Oh thank god.”
