Summary
Suguru Geto was taught from the moment he was born to fear God- to listen, obey, and never question. Satoru Gojo was taught to fear nothing at all. So when Satoru moves from New York to live with his grandmother in Parkdale, Arkansas in October of 1958, it’s only natural that he makes waves in their small rural town.
From then on, Suguru is forced to confront everything he thought he knew- about himself, about God, and about the church that raised him.
Despite the mistakes he’s made, despite the sickness and doubt that bloomed in their relationship, Suguru always believed Satoru would stay. That no matter how many times he pushed him away, Satoru would come back.
But then came the draft. One June morning, Satoru left to serve their country in Vietnam. And suddenly, Suguru was left with nothing but a blanket of grief and a handful of smudged, barely legible letters mailed from military bases and foreign countries.

He’s in nothing but a pair of tiny cotton shorts, not even the socks he always sleeps in. He has his sleep mask pushed up crookedly into his hairline like a wonky bandana. His hair curls around it, the white turned silver in the soft moonlight. His cheeks seem flushed, his eyes covered by a forearm.
It’s during moments like these, where Satoru is still and distracted, that Suguru lets this specific thing out.

Summary
“Satoru?” The word rings, fuzzy in his ears as it whines like tinnitus, familiar and heart stopping.
‘I’m dead.’ He can’t even hear his own thoughts over the loudness of the world, staggering where he stands, eyes still fixated on the sky, on the sun. ‘I’m dead, I died, I felt my heart stop, this can’t be, it can’t-’
“Hey,” it comes again, a little more urgent than before, a little closer, another hammer to his ears and all the noise shrieking behind his eyes. He recoils hard enough to go stumbling as a hand reaches for him, covered in flesh rather than empty bone, tan and recognizable. Unbelievable.
There’s something wet trickling from his nose. Bile stings on the back of his tongue. The words dissolve into the rest of the white noise as he stares up at the blue of the sky, and tries to remember if he’d ever had a hallucination as bright as this.
‘I have to be dead,’ he thinks. Somehow, he isn’t.
Or: Gojo Satoru goes back in time. He makes a couple of changes for the better.
