And then he turned again to look at San one more time, as if memorizing him until his very last moment. He smiled at San while tears were falling down his face. He heard his sister crying, calling out his name. Then, the blood of Aunty Jit, the zombies’ “pack leader,” slid into his veins like liquid fire.
“NON!” San roared. He slammed his fists against the door one last time, then tore himself free, sprinting toward him. But the distance between them was too long, the world too cruel.
Non smiled faintly, even as his body started to shake and fell to the ground. Prao and Mook were beside him.
By the time San reached him, Non had already collapsed. His body convulsed, veins blackening like ink. San caught him before his head hit the ground, crying, shaking, begging.
“You idiot! You fucking idiot!”
The helicopter lifted away with a shriek of engines and wind, carrying Ning, the professor, and their chance at survival. All of it fading into the clouds. The others stood in stunned silence as San screamed into the storm.
