It was funny, Gaunt mused from his perch on the window seat, how his tolerance for other people had only lowered coming back from the War. The threshold was already unacceptably low when he was in school, especially if you were to ask his mother.
“No wonder girls never wish to dance with you if you are always looking so dour, Heinrich.” she would hiss at him after another night of being glued to the corners of the room, and finding him moping around the house the next day. “Versuchst du, überhaupt?" Gaunt would have been the first to admit that, no he wasn’t really trying, but he refused to be petulant, so bowed his head and apologised. The shame in the action was true enough, and it was always easier to submit to his mother than risk further provoking her ire.
Now, he was squashed against the windowpane with his knees up against his chest, feeling tired and foolish. The picture he imagined he created, all six-foot-two inches of him, dressed in his evening clothes and curled in on himself like a sulking child, made him wince a little. He felt he must be too old for this.

He was hit all at once by an overwhelming wave of affection and near-hysterical disbelief at how careful and understanding Jihyun had been during the worst of it, and continued to be now. Even after shattering into pieces, his boyfriend was always there to meticulously help build him back up again, and somehow go on loving him the same.
Jaewon wasn’t sure how to hold a love like that.

Ilya’s hand wraps around his bare wrist and squeezes. Shane barely stops himself from collapsing to his knees.
The pressure lights up every receptor of his touch-starved nervous system, wrenching a small, pained noise from the back of his throat. Every muted sensation comes flooding back so intensely that it almost hurts. He needs Ilya to hold him down until there’s nothing inside him but quiet. He wants to sink into him and disappear.
It takes Shane an entire beat to remember where they are. Fighting against the fog in his mind, he manages to drag his gaze up to meet Ilya’s.
There’s a slow-dawning horror and understanding on Ilya’s face.

Summary
Re-writes and expansions of Gauntwood’s first sexual encounter/s in In Memoriam, from Gaunt’s POV instead of Ellwood’s. This is smut, but also I think a great opportunity to explore their dynamic and the development of their connection. Also since this is all Gaunt’s POV, I really explore where I imagine he is at, and what he's experiencing within all this. Much of the dialogue is taken straight from the book; scenes used/built off of take place in ch. 7 & ch. 8 of the novel.
P.S. The title is taken from "They Flee From Me" by Sir Thomas Wyatt; as Ellwood (internally) quotes in the book.
