Summary
The universe knows love because it has been made to understand it.
When there is an act of love so wild and untamed, loud enough that the universe can feel it echoing through the already-there fragments in its core, it listens. It does not always respond, sometimes it cannot, but it always listens. When someone takes the time to stick their hands into the fragments of the universe, the universe will always take the time to hear their pleas.
And the universe can be convinced.
It begins like this:
Two souls, so intertwined with each other that it is difficult to tell them apart at first, refuse to leave the world. They scream and howl and fight, and so the universe allows them time to adjust. This is not uncommon; sometimes, souls become afraid.
These souls are not afraid. They are furious.
The universe listens to their screaming. They are loud and angry, and they demand to go back.
The universe listens a little more carefully.
They demand to go back to “her”.

Summary
Mira wakes up gasping, feeling like she’s been struck by lightning. For a second, she’s half convinced she’s still asleep, lights and noise flashing behind her eyes, playing out in her mind like a movie that she feels like she’s seen a thousand times.
The smell of dirt and earth; the brush of fingers across her knuckles; the weight of a shovel in her hands; the quiet hum of an open fridge interspersed with talking; soft music playing from another room; the heat of stage lights; sunbeams from open windows, spilling past a chair; fresh strawberries; pen ink smudged on her palms; silent promises ghosting across her temple; potted plants lining the hallway; snow on her face; I hate leaving; come back to me.
Everything swirls and swirls until it collides inward on itself, noise and lights and memories and smells and tastes burning away at the back of her throat, settling deep inside of her chest where something—
Tugs.
And then the entire world is alive, not just inside of her head, and Mira feels the exact moment her thoughts sharpen and shift, allowing for one to come through the loudest.
Zoey.

“Are you—like...um, with...anyone?” She offers, wincing at the way Zoey starts to laugh at her again. “Sorry! I think I’m just, like, tired, or something. It’s early!” Rumi laughs burying her face in her hands. “I swear I’m usually not like this.”
“It’s okay!” Zoey giggles, holding up her hands as she bobs her head up and down. “I get it! You—you literally watched me trip and eat shit and almost die, you’re totally good, don’t even worry. And it’s, like...complicated?” Zoey offers, her grin getting a little wider as the words come out. “It’s hard to explain.”
Rumi raises an eyebrow. “Like...have you guys not...confirmed anything?”
“I wish it was that easy,” Zoey mutters, rolling her eyes. “Like I said, complicated. They’re just really stubborn. Which is, like, a good thing! But...y’know,” Zoey says, waving a hand, “It’s just...difficult, sometimes. We’re working on it.”
“Well, I hope it works out,” Rumi says, sincerely.
Zoey grins, ducking her head again. “It’s working out just fine.”

This time, she’s Zoey.
It takes seventy-two years this time.
Tirelessly, the years stitch together. The sun rises and sets. The hollow spot inside of her waits. She has tried to make sense of these stubborn souls and the way they come back to her, how they always, without fail, manage to weave their way back through her chest, settling perfectly in the empty space within her that stays empty longer than it stays fulfilled. It must have something to do with the way the world shifted one day, how it broke apart entirely before being put back into place, starting to spin again as if it hadn’t come to a crashing halt. At some point, Zoey’s soul came loose. At some point, two more found a home.
The hollow spot inside of her chest waits, and then there’s a tug.
The entire world shifts, stopping on its axis again, and then it begins to careen forward. Dizzyingly fast and determined and loud. Then, in a voice that has remained just as stubborn as the soul who used it first, comes the command: “Find me.”
And Zoey does.
