"Can’t stand anybody but you having a shot a true love?” Merlin asked flatly. Arthur wrinkled his nose.
“No, idiot. Spirit animals don’t get along unless they belong to their soulmate. If my bird sees your hideous lion-“
“He is quite dashing, thank you. Besides, your bloody bird is too loud-“
“My bird is just trying to do me a favor and tune you out!” Arthur snapped and took a long breath “The point is they can’t be around each other. So unless you want Emmy to pluck out this lion’s eyes I suggest you tell him to bugger off.” He snapped. Merlin was inclined to tell Arthur to bugger off himself, but was immediately distracted by one word.
“Emmy?” He repeated and smiled. “You did name him.”

Set after 5x02 and then deviates from there.
Intent on protecting King Arthur from his prophesied death at the hands of Mordred, Merlin is entirely distrusting of the new Knight of Camelot. After discovering a secret meeting between Mordred, Morgana, and a mysterious woman Merlin has never seen before, his deepest fear is realized when he is forced to reveal his magic in an attempt to protect Arthur and Guinevere from a deadly assassination plot at the hands of Morgana. With Merlin’s most guarded secret revealed, will Mordred succeed in fulfilling his destiny? Or will Merlin be able to stop him?
~"I do not think Mordred is the one lying to me, Merlin," Arthur said through clenched teeth. "You used magic. You used magic against a knight of Camelot. Not Morgana. What am I to make of that?"
And Merlin saw how Arthur saw it. He saw how it looked. He shook his head helplessly because he also saw one other thing: Arthur wasn't going to believe him. He had attacked a knight of Camelot. With magic. Arthur and Gwen had seen. And Mordred, though he was the true traitor, had not done anything to suggest that he was. Mordred looked completely innocent. And Merlin looked very much guilty.
