That being said... when the going gets tough, sometimes the tough take on two mysterious, magnetically charming passengers who agree to pay their way in cash in exchange for as few questions asked as possible.
And if comms go down eleven hours into a month-long journey... well, that's probably nothing to worry about.

"That has to hurt." Cub says distantly, already recovering from his daze at the sheer force of Scar’s magic. That much power, and absolutely none of it leaking into Scar’s voice? He knows that's painful for Scar.
"It's okay, it's okay, I don't want to spook you, it's fine, I'm fine, see, I'm fine and I'm here." Scar babbles reassuring circuitous and repetitive nonsense, smooth and over-eager and so painfully devoid of even the slightest charm. Cub has heard this before. He knows what this is.
"You're bound." Cub realizes, the words flat on his lips. Frigid chill tightens around his ribcage.

Scar stares for a minute, eyes going glassy. They are green— a nice, human color— and Grian imagines, for a moment, that they are back on Hermitcraft, and Scar’s eyes are gleaming bright blue with mischief, magic, a little bloodlust and the capacity to act on it. He imagines that he is years younger, that they both are, that Cub is here and coming around the corner of the ConCorp building any second now with his own bright blue magic dancing off of his eyes and his shoulders, and Grian is standing up and bouncing on his heels and giggling as he tells Scar about something else that Mumbo’s done, how silly Mumbo sounds pacing back and forth muttering himself as he tries to get the redstone working for Sahara— Grian misses Mumbo so much—
“Another take,” Scar echoes, sounding hollow. “Oh.” His throat bobs up and down, and after a moment he says in a very small voice, “Okay.” His gaze flicks down to where Grian lies, flat on his back and trying to breathe shallowly, shivering with leftover pain.
“I can do another take.”

“Actually, I was thinking of building a permit office,” Scar said carefully, and Grian’s feathers bristled up. “Don’t freak out, though, okay? I’m not reusing ideas, never, perish the thought. We’re free thinking men, I’m taking inspiration. Opening doors to new experiences, really— digging deep.”
The basement, then. Grian skittered his gaze away from Scar’s, stared at one of their shulker boxes and envisioned the contents with gusto. He’d gotten fantastic at counting his inventory if he was having trouble thinking correctly, within the boundaries their new admins preferred. He had to keep his thoughts in order if he was going to come up with phrases like well, batter my fish sticks and fry me at the fair— the one time he’d tried that one out, Scar had laughed so hard that he’d fallen off a battlement and died, and One had punished Grian for the delay. Clearly he needed better material.
“And here I thought vex didn’t need to open doors,” he said lightly.
“Oh, we don’t, really,” Scar said, and alright, that was Cub. Cub was here. Cub was here.

Phil knew about soulmates, of course, like he knew about dogs and flowers and the sun. He just didn’t understand how he could miss someone he’d never even met. It wasn’t fair. But, fair or not, the feeling persisted. On the good days it was like an itch he could never reach, or a limb he couldn’t fully stretch—nagging, but manageable.
On the bad days he wanted to scream and cry and smash his fists against the walls.

Grian's life has been one long power crawl. He's been fighting since he was born. Avians are a familial bunch and to be rejected by a flock is to be an outcast in society. Being abused, neglected, hurt - it's nothing new to him. When Grian gets kidnapped, he prepares to die at the notorious hermit craft's hands. A terrifying coven known for the myriad variety of powerful hybrids and creatures, and they had Grian kidnapped. He was prepared to die, for this sad power crawl and journey for a name to be known to end at their clutches.
Instead, they grab his hand, hoist him up, and demand he breathes a higher air. Where Grian's prepared to die, they're plotting a new life for him.
(Grian isn't sure which one is more cruel.)

It starts small. Small enough that Mumbo doesn't really clock it at first: stray thoughts about block palettes that have nothing to do with his project; a vague flicker of irritation for no reason he can discern; random twinges around his shoulder blades even when he hasn't been crouched over a redstone circuit, tufts of downy feathers hidden in his normally slick black hair.
He chalks it up to the influence of the moon at first as it hangs ever-larger on the horizon. Honestly, most of the strange happenings in Boatem can be chalked up to the moon these days. His lack of sleep probably isn't helping, either. Lack of sleep can do a lot to a person, and none of it is good.
Mumbo ignores the small things. He's got bigger things—much bigger things—to worry about now.Or so he thinks.
(Or: Mumbo deals with being soulbound to Grian, and by extension Scar, very poorly.)
