    It should be weird when Jake calls Quaritch old man, a reminder that he's closer to Spider's age than to Quaritch's—and it is kind of weird, a little bit, but it also makes Spider feel like he and Jake are on a team, with inside jokes meant just for them, something that Dad can't touch.

    Jake rolls his window down and props his elbow on top of the door. Sunlight glints off his aviators and the sheen of sweat on his forehead. It's hot as balls outside, and the truck's AC takes a while to get going. There’s a patch of sweat on Jake’s white T-shirt and just a hint of hair poking out at his armpit. Spider looks away, his face heating.
