    Summary

“For someone who claims not to like thinking,” Edwin says, raising an eyebrow, “you do a remarkably good job of it.”

Charles laughs. “Tell that to my old teachers, mate.”

“If they disagree, then they can’t be very qualified.” Edwin says this simply, like it’s just a fact of life. Like it’s plainly obvious that if anyone thinks Charles is stupid, it’s they who are at fault.

Or: Charles grew up poor and is likely to stay that away, his job at the magic store notwithstanding. By the time he meets Edwin, he's decided that he wants a new life. In between figuring out what's up with the mysterious wish-granting pigeons, and whether he can go to the Royal Ball, Edwin makes him want to take a chance on being happy as well.

"I would be remiss if I did not explain further why I encouraged you to go with Death earlier," his new friend says.

"Yeah?" Charles fits a smile on his face and nods at the ghost. His fellow ghost, now. Edwin. He tried to get Charles to push off, and that has Charles a little nervous. But before that, Edwin said he wished they could be friends for longer, and he stayed with Charles all night, so he must like him at least a little. Charles can work with that. Everyone likes him eventually.

Everyone gets sick of him eventually as well, but before that, he can usually stretch things out a while.

    Summary

Light flares up from the book, white and blinding. When she blinks away the spots from her vision the room is gone. The book is gone.
Dim green light casts a sickly pall down a long, decrepit looking hallway. She takes a breath and nearly chokes on the smell of dust and rot and something else, sharp and unnatural, like ozone. The light doesn’t seem to be coming from anywhere in particular. It gives the place an eerie unreality. It makes her skin crawl.

    Summary

People always expect Edwin to miss things from 1916. Charles expected him to miss aspects of life. Niko thought he would miss people. Crystal, and a number of their clients, generally the ones who are either quite unpleasant or quite concerned that Edwin will be unpleasant, expect him to miss larger aspects of society.
There really is very little he misses.
    He does miss the stars.

    Summary

The first time Edwin recalls any skin to skin contact is when Simon and his friends grabbed his wrists to bind them. Before that, there was no memory of a sensation like that. His mother would only ever touch him with a gloved hand.

And Hell, well, he remembers being touched - but every touch meant an infliction of pain, of being torn to shreds limb by limb.

So when they meet and Charles asks him if he misses kissing, misses touch, the answer is honest and simple. No, Edwin does not miss it. Does not think he would know what to miss.

But then Charles stays. And Edwin supposes he has to learn.
