Summary
So, contrary to what Mari believes—and she does believe it, loudly and often—they don't just stare intensely into each other's eyes in dead silence. They do other things too, like the aforementioned sex, and everything.

Mel should’ve kissed her then. Grabbed her, kissed her, dragged her out of there and made them sign up for softball, or golf, or whatever sport lesbians play in the movies.

Summary
A beat passes. Lottie just looks at her, like she’s taking her in. Like confirmation. "You’re so powerful."
*
She always does this, doesn’t she? She fucked Jeff so she could be Jackie. Made Nat butcher Ben so they could switch places. There was something similar in the way she beat a willing Lottie into the ground - Shauna was Lottie, and Lottie was the bear. Power never feels hers unless she’s taken it from someone else. Unless she’s consumed them.
*
Lottie gives Shauna power. Shauna feeds Lottie's delusions. They make each other worse.

Summary
Gen is quiet for a second, then, "In her defense—god, what am I saying." She shakes her head, exhaling sharply. "Fuck it. In her defense, she did threaten Mari’s life if she let you die."
"She threatens Mari’s life, like, everyday," Mel says, sniffling back snot. "It doesn’t mean anything."
*
She wonders if this is how Shauna felt with Jackie. If she was happy to follow until one day she wasn’t. If she had spent years thinking her honesty meant something, only to realize too late it was built on a foundation of half-truths: things she was comfortable saying, that were conveniently what Jackie wanted to hear. Until half-truths turned into lies and betrayals.
*
Mel breaks a pattern.

Summary
Shauna has done the math, knows her life expectancy tops out at seventy-eight or so—and that’s not accounting for what havoc has been wrought on her insides by nineteen months of scrounging, scavenging, praying, and all the horrible things that live in the spaces between those words. She’s got about fifty-six years of exactly this to go, give or take. She can do it. She has to. It’s no more than she deserves, no less than she owes.
She lasts a month.
Everyone said marrying Jeff Sadecki was a mistake, but they were wrong. Shauna Shipman doesn’t make mistakes. She doesn’t make anything.
Shauna breaks.
(Or: Shauna invites cataclysm in pursuit of closure.)

Bookmarker's Notes
going through my bookmarks feeling like something was missing, had a eureka moment in literally 10 seconds. one of my fav shauna-centric fics oat. the kind of story that required my full commitment and only got better with every reread - either bc i missed things at first or bc i only came to fully appreciate them after reading them a second or third time (it's been a while)
ALSO: one of the two fics that have convinced me of the mistyshauna potential. really didn't expect to leave a fic that has some of my fav shauna ships struck by the one i didn't initially care for!! spectacularrr -

Summary
“So this is just sex, right?” she chirps as Shauna shuts the bedroom door behind them. “Nothing crazy? You don’t have a knife in your pocket, do you? Or a gun?”
Shauna's lack of response doesn’t inspire confidence.
