Dawn is nigh, but I could not wait--I am squandering a candle stub to write this, and I expect to be chastised, but I have seen the Serpent in the sea, following behind us. Brother Bernard was not only telling stories, it seems.
The others said it was naught but our wake and the rising moon, but I know what I saw. Does the wake move like that, twisting o'er the surface? Does the wake hiss my name between the clamor of the waves and the cry of the gulls?
Brother Everard said I might be mistaken, for the sea is tricky and will doom us if it can. Only Brother Fell was silent, watching the sea behind us, his hand on my shoulder.
