Summary
It starts when he’s six-and-ten. Years after the knife, the scraping tool with which the maester removed the bloody jelly that was what was left of his eyeball. Years, too, after the stitches came out and the gaping socket was filled, first with a smooth stone to help it hold its shape, then the sapphire. Aemond is as used to it as he can be — though there are still humiliating moments when, over-tired or over-frustrated, his depth perception fails him and he knocks over the glass he’s reaching for.
Then one morning he wakes and it’s as if someone has pushed a thousand needles into the empty socket while he slept. His fingers fly to it, yet there’s nothing. Simply a tight, stabbing pressure behind his eye.
(In which Aemond gets chronic migraines and Helaena refuses to let him deal with them alone)
