Chapter Text

On the Sabaody Archipelago, Penguin became enraptured by the fighting style of the Massacre Soldier -- he later learned the name of this infamous man when his captain began yelling it at the top of his lungs. While they didn’t have a proper meeting at the auction house, he was able to observe from afar as their captains fought the marines and ran from Pacifictas.

“Why do you think they call Killer the Massacre Soldier? Do you think Killer is even his real name?” Penguin asked Shachi as they were descending to Fishman Island.

Shachi thought for a second, “Probably because he massacred people? I think it’s a pretty self-explanatory title. And even if Killer isn’t his real name, I think it’s pretty fitting.”

“Well, I could’ve told you that, you moron! But I mean, who did he massacre in order to get that name? I mean is it REALLY that self-explanatory? Think about Captain, just because he’s the “Surgeon of Death”, doesn’t mean he is like... actually the Surgeon of Death.”

Shachi gave him a deadpan look “....Peng…He is the Surgeon of Death.”

“YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!” Penguin was starting to get frustrated with his best friend and his lack of opinion on this topic. Obviously, Penguin knew why Law was called the Surgeon of Death, but considering how much he loves cute things (i.e. Bepo) it was sometimes difficult to take him seriously.

“NO, I DON'T! I really don’t know what you want me to say! Maybe he doesn’t kill people?! Would that make you happy? It isn’t like WE don’t have our own moments where we cross that line. We’re pirates, Peng, what do you expect?” By this point, Shachi was done with Penguin’s questions but paused before asking,

“Why are you so interested in a Kid Pirate anyways? This was our first run-in with them, and while it was eventful, was it really that memorable?” While Shachi didn’t understand his friend’s interest in this conversation, his persistence was making him curious.

Sure Penguin had asked about other pirates before, but it was more about their fighting style and how they might be able to use it against them in order to protect their captain and crew. It was no secret that while the Heart Pirates were infamous, it was all due to their captain’s reputation. Penguin and Shachi were by no means weak, but they still had to use every resource available to them.

Penguin’s silence makes his friend really look at him. He’d become fidgety ever since he last talked and refused to look Shachi in the face. The only other time Penguin acted like this was when…

“Holy shit. You like him don’t you?!”

Penguin looked alarmed, “No I do not! I was just curious!”

Penguin was terrified, how on earth did Shachi figure it out?! He can admit he’s taken a particularly strong interest in Killer but it's not like it's the first time they’ve had conversations like this.

“Oh my god, I can’t believe you’re lying to me and yourself! I know you had a thing for buff guys but COME ON PENG! He’s Captain Kid’s first mate!” Shachi was shocked by how quickly this conversation shifted but nonetheless was even more intrigued with his friend's feelings.

“Come on Penguin,” The use of his full name made him snap his head up and look wide eyed at Shachi, “it’s okay to have a little crush on him just be honest with me.”

Penguin averted his eyes and slowly whispered, “I mean I guess he’s pretty attractive and his fighting style is really cool to watch…”

“....okay.”

“...”

“Thanks for being honest…NOW WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING?!”

Penguin was shocked by the sudden outburst, “You told me to be honest, why are you freaking out?!”

“Because I can’t believe you have a crush on a Kid Pirate!!” Shachi looked like he was about to have a panic attack and he wasn’t even the one that was having a romantic crisis.

“It’s not like anything is going to happen! Do you know how low the chances are that he even knows who I am let alone the chance that we’ll run into the Kid Pirates again?”

*****

Unbeknownst to the two, their captain had heard their whole conversation. Did they not take into account how small this submarine was and how much their voices carried? Law was going to go talk to his first mate about their plans once they reached Fishman Island, but after hearing that whole…ordeal, he decided that a call to a certain red head was in order.

*****

While Penguin was reassuring Shachi and himself that this crush of his wasn’t going to become an issue, the infamous Massacre Soldier was having his own rude awakening.

“You’ve decided that the first thing you would do in the New World is have a gay crisis over a little bird?!” Killer cackled, alerting the whole ship of his first mate's problem.

“Would you keep your mouth shut! It’s not a “gay” crisis, I’ve simply realized I might like men more than I realized and that just might be because of a certain Heart Pirate,” Killer tried hushing his captain but knew that once Kid reached this volume it was useless trying to get him to quiet down.

“Whatever! But I mean come on, you could have picked someone better. I mean yeah he’s a part of Trafalgar’s crew but he doesn’t even have a bounty! He’s practically some no-name pirate!” Kid was shocked that he was even having this conversation let alone that it was about one of Trafalgar’s crew.

“You obviously didn’t see him fight, he definitely knew what he was doing against that Pacifista. Based on his skills and how he acted with his crew, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the first mate. Maybe he doesn’t have a bounty because most of Trafalgar’s crew is unknown,” Why was Killer trying to justify his choice in taste with Kid of all people?

Kid side-eyed Killer at how much he was building up this supposed “first mate”, “You really like him don’t you? And you barely even interacted with him. I’m surprised Kil, it normally takes a lot more than that for anything to get your attention.”

Killer looked away from his friend's probing gaze, “I mean he was just interesting to watch…and I guess he was pretty cute too if I had to admit.”

Ahh there it is, this is what Kid was waiting for, “Ohh I see. So you think he’s cute huh?” Kid was never going to let him live this down. If Killer crushing on a Heart Pirate is what gave him this kind of ammunition then so be it. That’s what friends are for right?

Killer could see the mischief in Kid’s eyes, “I know what you’re thinking but I’m not embarrassed about finding him intriguing. And his name is Penguin, not Little Bird ,” as he said that, Killer realized that he liked the sound of “Little Bird” but decided he would keep that to himself.

“Speaking of the Heart Pirates, why didn’t you immediately pick a fight with them when we saw them at the auction house? We all saw Trafalgar flip you off yet all you did was sneer? That’s not really like you Captain,” it was Killer’s turn to interrogate his friend. He knew the minute he brought this up Kid would try to deny it, for whatever reason he thought he was better at hiding this from Killer than he really was.

This time it was Kid who got a little quiet, “I'm not sure what you’re implying Killer, but whatever it is I can tell you, you have the wrong idea.”

Bingo.

The way his captain reacted to his slight accusation only confirmed what he already knew. He knew that Kid was a little…obsessive when it came to the Surgeon of Death. Not only does that title of his draw attention, but all that he accomplished in the North Blue before making it onto the Grand Line had him in Kid’s sights for a while now.

Luck must have been on Kid’s side because right when Killer was about to question him further, Kid’s personal den-den rang. The only people who would ever call him on that were all on the ship, so Killer was a little confused, but the minute it started ringing Kid’s eyes went wide.

“Uh, I just need to umm take this real quick. It’s nothing important or anything! Probably just someone with the wrong number! No big deal! But you know… I better take it and uhh set them straight ya know?”

Killer only just looked at him. What the hell was happening? Why did some random call on his den den make his captain react like this?

“Whatever you say, Kid. Guess I’ll go check on the crew while you…do whatever it is you’re doing.” With that, Killer left his captain with his thoughts back on a certain Heart Pirate.

Chapter Text

Penguin kept hearing stories of the infamous Kid Pirates as they traversed through the New World. The Heart Pirates have now made a new name for themselves with their captain claiming the title of Warlord — Penguin still isn’t sure how he got all those hearts, but he’s not really sure he wants to know if he’s being honest with himself. So while the Heart Pirates are using Law’s new title to plot against Doflamingo and the Yonkos, it seems the Kid Pirates have wreaked their own havoc across the New World.

“Do you think there’s any chance that we might run into any other Worst Generation crews?”

Shachi rolled his eyes. If Penguin was trying to be subtle, he was going to have to put a lot more effort into it.

“What you meant to say was, what are the chances we’ll run into my beefy boyfriend and his insane crew? Come on Peng, at this point just go to Captain and ask to make a detour. You know where they are, they aren’t subtle enough to not draw attention to themselves.”

Penguin sputtered, “I don’t know what you’re talking about! I genuinely am curious if we’ll run into anyone and how Captain will deal with it!”

“...I thought we already talked about lying to each other, Penguin,” At this point, Shachi was done with trying to beat around the bush when it came to this topic. If Penguin wasn’t going to be honest then he was just going to have to stop trying to get information out of Shachi.

Penguin could tell that Shachi was done with his dodging. While Penguin had accepted his feelings, and he knew that Shachi had too, he was too insecure to mention it to his captain. Even if Law was okay with his feelings and would try and find the Kid Pirates (which he highly doubted) there’s no way that Killer feels the same.

“You would think that after all this time, one of you would have said something to me. So much for being my first mate huh?”

Both pirates jolted and looked at Law in shock. Had he been standing there the whole time?!

“Umm I’m not sure what you mean Captain. We haven’t been keeping anything from you!” Penguin was so bad at lying to his captain that Shachi actually started to feel bad for him.

“Penguin-ya, it’s pointless trying to get out of this. We all know what’s going on, it would be ridiculous trying to deny it. I’m a little surprised that you haven’t realized where we are by now,” Law really was surprised. How distracted was he? Had he really not realized what Law had been planning?

“What do you mean? Aren’t we headed to Punk Hazard? I mean I know I don’t really help with navigation, but you always tell us when the plans change,” Penguin was confused, if they weren’t headed to Punk Hazard then where the hell were they going?

“You both really need to start being more observant. I would think that it’s pretty obvious that we’re headed straight for Hajime Island,” Law said mischievously. He still can’t believe that Eustass agreed to his proposition.

Shachi looked confused before a look of understanding and shock crossed his face, “But wait, isn’t that where the Kid Pirates were last seen?! Why are we going to the same island that they were just on?”

“You’re wrong, it’s not the island they were last on,” that made Shachi give a big sigh of relief, “it’s the island they’re still on.”

Law was going to give his first mate a heart attack. Throughout this whole interaction, Penguin had just stood there in shock, his face slowly getting more pale as it went on. Was Law serious, were they really about to meet the Kid Pirates? And from the sound of it, intentionally ?!

Shachi looked at his poor friend, “You okay Peng? You look like you’re about to be sick…”

“Yes Penguin-ya, are you feeling okay? Do you have any thoughts on this matter?” Law really was enjoying himself. If Penguin wasn’t going to be forthcoming about this, he might as well use it as an opportunity to teach him never to hide anything from his captain.

“After Saboady, Eustass-ya and I shared information and later decided that meeting up a couple of times in the New World might be beneficial to both crews. I might not particularly be fond of the Kid Pirates but their captain is intriguing. Who knows what we might gain from this.”

It seems like their captain was determined to give them a heart attack today. Not only did they just find out he’s apparently been in contact with a rival crew but he also finds their captain intriguing , whatever the hell that means. When has their captain ever been interested in the movements of another crew, unless it was to defeat them?

While they were contemplating the sanity of their captain, Law nonchalantly stated, “We’ll be there in about two hours so I suggest you both help us surface and get ready to go ashore.”

*****

Kid was anxious. Everyone on the crew could tell that something was going on with their captain. Not only had they not left the island after they finished their business and set their log pose, but Kid was also dodging any and all questions related to their next step. Killer knew something was going on with his friend but thought it best to leave him alone until he was ready to fess up.

Even after deciding that he would wait for Kid to come to him, the same could not be said for the rest of the crew. Since they obviously weren’t going to get any information out of their captain, Killer was the next best option.

“I told you already, we’ll leave when Kid is damn well ready to! You ALL know that no one can tell him what to do let alone where to sail,” Killer can understand now why Kid hates answering questions, their crew is annoying as fuck.

“KILLER KILLER! ANOTHER PIRATE CREW HAS BEEN SPOTTED AND IT LOOKS LIKE THEY’RE HEADED THIS WAY!” called Wire from the crow's nest.

“What?! Can you see their Jolly Roger, who is it?” Killer knew that their location had been leaked but he didn’t think that anyone would actually have the balls to come and confront them.

“This might be a bad Killer…I think it's the Heart Pirates! It’s definitely a sub and there’s only one crew in the New World with a ship like that,” once Wire dropped that bomb on them, everyone started getting ready for a fight.

Killer was getting ready for a possible confrontation but slowed down a little. This couldn’t be a coincidence, could it? It would explain Kid’s recent actions but when would they have made plans? As far as he knew, they hadn’t been in contact with the Heart Pirates since passing into the New World.

All of a sudden everything made sense. The den-den call a few months ago after Saboady. Kid’s constant teasing about Killer’s feelings for a certain Heart Pirate. His own denial that there was anything going on with Trafalgar Law. His insistence that they stay at Hajime Island for just a little longer. And now the appearance of the Heart Pirates.

Killer was livid.

He was going to kill his best friend.

*****

“Hmm, it seems we made better time than I thought. And look at that, it seems we’ve already been spotted by Eustass-ya’s crew and that they’re preparing a warm welcome,” Penguin gave his captain a look of disdain. Not only had he been plotting against him, but he didn’t think that prepping the canons was a “warm welcome”.

“Are we really about to do this Captain? You know we’re still out of range, we have time to turn back,” Penguin was praying that his captain would see sense and give up on whatever outrageous plan he had concocted.

“Now why on earth would we leave when we’re so close Penguin-ya? This is a great opportunity to see what another Worst Generation crew is up to.”

Law was being way too casual about this. Penguin sighed and simply went below deck to avoid any inevitable confrontation they were about to have with the Kid Pirates.

*****

All the while, Killer was on his way to disembowel his captain.

“Did you make a deal with Trafalgar Law to meet at this island? And if you even think about lying to me, I’ll kill all the Heart Pirates and then you!” Killer was not about to deal with any more of Kid’s excuses and was not going to let him ignore him this time.

Kid immediately reacted to what Killer said, “Wait he’s here already?! I wasn’t expecting him till tomorrow! Damn it Trafalgar!”

Kid might have been shocked at first but now he just looked pissed. He quickly made it on deck,

“EVERYONE CALM THE FUCK DOWN! We’re not going to fight the damn Heart Pirates so put your damn weapons away!”

The entire crew immediately stopped but they were doing but rather than follow orders just stared at their captain in shock.

“What do you mean we’re not going to fight them?”

“I mean exactly that! Calm down and pack your shit away!” He knew he shocked them all but come on, he’s the captain he can do whatever he wants.

By the time they finally started doing what he said, the Heart Pirates had pulled up next to the Victoria Punk.

Of course, Trafalgar was casually just standing there smirking at him, Kid scoffed.

“Well, well, well, if it isn’t Eustass Kid. What a coincidence running into you here,” Law said, knowing he was just provoking the volatile captain even more.

“Seems like we need to have a little chat Trafalgar,” Kid sneered at him.

“That seems reasonable, Eustass-ya, say…captains and first mates meet at the bar in town? You know, neutral ground?”

“Ya whatever Trafalgar, we’ll meet you there,” Kid quickly turned and walked away. It was his business only if his sneer turned into a little smirk.

Chapter Text

Penguin refused to leave his room. He knew Law was doing this on purpose, he also knew this would backfire but he wasn’t sure how yet. Who knows what really goes on in his captain's head?

“Peng, you have to come out eventually. You’re the first mate so you have to go with him,” Shachi couldn’t believe that Penguin thought locking himself in his room would get him out of meeting the Kid Pirates, “Not only that, but do you really want your captain to meet with a rival crew all by himself?”

Shachi knew that argument was what would sway his friend.

How long that might take, he wasn’t sure.

“Oh, he’s screwed now,” Shachi laughed as a blue hue suddenly enveloped him and spread to Penguin’s room.

“Captain! N-” Penguin was cut off as he was suddenly transported to the deck of the Polar Tang. He knew he was going to have to go no matter what, but he didn’t think Law would resort to using his devil fruit to make him.

“I’m not sure what makes you think you can avoid your first mate responsibilities, Penguin-ya. Who knows, this might turn out better than whatever it is you’re imagining,” Law really was enjoying torturing his first mate. He did think that this meeting had the potential to end badly but based on the conversations he overheard Penguin and Shachi have and his own conversation with Kid, he was willfully optimistic.

“Come now, we can’t be late,” As Law walked off toward town, Penguin gave Bepo a pleading look. He had witnessed the entire exchange and Penguin was hoping he would save him. Sadly, Bepo was too loyal to Law to ever challenge any of his decisions.

Penguin accepted his fate and followed after his captain.

*****

“Are you sure this is the best idea? What weird deal did you even make with Trafalgar that had you both agreeing to meet without killing each other?” Killer really was concerned for the sanity of his captain.

They had just arrived at the agreed-upon spot and were keeping an eye on the door for the other captain and his first mate.

The bar they chose to meet at was pretty decent for a pirate hangout. While it was unmistakably a bar, the majority of the small building was taken up by a few billiard tables and some booths. The two Kid Pirates had snagged a small table near one of the billiards that gave them easy access to the exit should anything happen.

This wasn’t the first time Killer had asked him a question like that since the Heart Pirates had appeared, “I told you already, everything is going to turn out fine. We just agreed to meet up and possibly exchange some information.”

“Wait, so we’re allies with the Heart Pirates now? I thought we had that plan to-”

“No,” Kid quickly interrupted, he still wasn’t sure if his other plan was even going to happen let alone be solid enough to discuss it out in the open, “We’re not allies . This is just a… temporary truce between the Kid and Heart Pirates.”

“I couldn’t have put it better myself Eustass-ya,” How had they missed the Heart Pirate walking up? Killer didn’t see anyone with him and voiced that concern.

“Did your first mate not come? I’m surprised they would let you come by yourself.”

“Oh, my first mate is here. He just went to grab a drink, but I assure you he’ll be a part of this meeting,” The smirk Law gave Killer sent chills down his spine. He was still curious as to who the first mate to the infamous Heart Pirates was but figured he would find out soon enough.

At that thought, another figure slowly approached their table. Even with his head down, his penguin hat was unmistakable. Killer quickly shot Kid a slightly panicked look but all he got in response was a smug grin. Was his captain setting him up?! Did Kid really plan a meeting with the Heart Pirates just because of his feelings for Penguin? No, even if Kid loved to tease him about that he would never do something as crazy as that…would he?

Shit. He totally would.

While Killer was internally panicking and trying to keep a calm facade, Penguin's obvious internal struggle was as plain as day on his face. He shakily set down the drinks he got for him and Law and sat next to his captain, ignoring the gaze of the Kid Pirates. With his head down, only Law could see the flush on his face and his jumpy leg.

After finally collecting himself, Killer realized that Law and Kid had been talking for a few minutes already about what they had accomplished so far. Ignoring the captain's dick-measuring contest, Killer turned his attention to the other first mate at the table.

With his head down, Killer wasn’t able to make out his face but could see the blush spreading down his neck.

“Cute,” Killer whispered to himself.

Killer jolted, hoping he was quiet enough to not be heard. He knew that he found the other pirate attractive but to be so out of it and say something out loud right in front of him was alarming.

By the way Penguin snapped his head up, Killer knew he was busted. He quickly looked away hoping that acting as casually as possible would make Penguin ignore whatever he thought he heard. Luckily, his helmet easily hid his own blush.

On the other hand, he was sitting right next to the person who knew him best and would use whatever ammunition he could to mess with him.

“Kil? I didn’t quite catch that,” Kid was thriving. The wide grin on his face signaled to Killer that he knew exactly what was said.

“Yes Killer-ya, were you addressing my first mate? It seemed as though you were looking at him when you said…what was it again?”

Killer knew he had been caught. These captains were absolute menaces and apparently were ready to die by his hands. It seemed like Penguin was the only one who was too spaced out to hear what he said, but based on the now obvious blush on his face he also knew that Killer had been staring at him.

Might as well use this opportunity.

“I was just about to ask Penguin about his own experiences in the New World. If I heard correctly, you were separated from your crew during your time as a Warlord? Penguin must have taken on a lot of responsibility as first mate, I’m impressed.”

Bullseye . He finally had Penguin looking him in the eyes, or wherever he perceived Killer’s eyes to be, and…

Killer is speechless.

Penguin has the most beautiful hazel eyes he has ever seen. He had to physically restrain himself from reaching over and taking Penguin’s hat off just so he could see his eyes better. He wants to hold Penguin’s face close so he can study all the colors he knows are there.

His speechlessness was noticeable enough that Kid had to elbow him in the ribs to get his attention.

“I, uh I’m sorry, what did you say?” Damn, he really needed to get a hold of himself if he wanted to seem at all put together in front of the Heart Pirates. If he is being completely honest with himself, he would love to kick Kid and Law to the curb and just stare into Penguin’s eyes.

Penguin scratched the back of his neck, “I was just saying that it wasn’t that impressive. Law gave us pretty clear instructions on what to do while he was gone,” He trailed off.

Killer saw his eyes cut to some small-time pirates who had taken over one of the billiard tables and had started arguing over the rules.

“Do you want to play a couple of rounds? I mean I assume we’re going to be working closely for a while on this island, so why not break the tension a little? Nothing says truce like some good old competition.”

After getting the captains to agree, Killer was over the moon. He really was proud of himself for smoothly — if only he knew about the looks Kid was giving him — finding a way to spend more time with Penguin.

Sadly, it seemed Killer didn’t realize what he was getting himself into. While he was no stranger to the game, it seemed the Heart Pirates were pros. Each time the cue would miss or tap a ball at a wrong angle Law would snicker and Penguin would giggle a little.

Killer had no complaints when it came to hearing Penguin laugh, but after proposing a competition, he was embarrassed at how royally he was getting his ass whooped.

“I was, umm, just wondering…how difficult it was to use your..scythes while fighting,” Penguin interrupted right as Killer lined up his shot.

Penguin’s question took Killer by surprise but helped knock him out of his initial shock and embarrassment.

“I mean aren’t they a little restricting, being on your wrists and arms like that? I understand that the mechanics of it probably make the blades easier to use, but isn’t it a little inhibiting?” He fiddled with his cue stick. The blank looks he was getting were making him nervous. Should he not have asked about the scythes?

“Sorry, was that too personal? I just tend to get curious about unique fighting techniques and weapons. My bad,” Well this is awkward, he didn’t think that asking about his scythes would be crossing the line.

“No, it’s okay! I was just surprised! I’ve never had anyone ask about how they affect my fighting,” Well now Penguin was definitely embarrassed, was he really the first person to ask that?

“But I don’t think they affect me that much. I’ve been using them for so long that they really just feel like an extension of my arm. It’s pretty much second nature, it honestly feels wrong not to have them,” Killer could tell he was second-guessing asking him that question but tried to reassure him it was okay.

“Um, if you want while we’re still docked on the island I could show them to you. I mean, as long as you share some fighting techniques too. You know..to make it fair,” It was Killer’s turn to be embarrassed…again.

Why would he offer something like that? He didn’t know how long Kid planned to stay after meeting with Trafalgar. He definitely didn’t know whether Penguin trusted him enough to meet again let alone spar.

“I would love to. I have a few techniques I’ve been wanting to try but Shachi is too scared to spar with me and Law is just unfair. I think I saw a field not far from where you’re docked if you want to meet there tomorrow?”

It seemed like Penguin got over his shock and embarrassment as his fidgeting had stopped. He was genuinely excited to spar with Killer. It had been a while since the Heart Pirates had run into another crew or any Marines and Penguin didn’t want to get rusty.

Killer immediately perked up. Somehow he managed to land a date with Penguin — he chose to ignore that no one had claimed it would be a date. He also had to make a conscious effort not to flip off Kid for giving him the widest grin he’d ever seen.

Yes, Killer might be excited. Yes, his excitement showed by how he almost snapped the cue stick in half. Yes, he knows Law is giving his first mate the exact same look. But is he going to give any of that away?

Not if he can help it.

“Sounds like a date,” He couldn’t help himself, he was too excited, “I have some things to do tomorrow, so let's meet midday,” Other than trying not to have a panic attack about seeing Penguin, no he doesn’t.

If only Killer knew just how happy Penguin was too, “Sounds good to me! I’m looking forward to it, and I expect you not to hold back.”

“You know, not to brag, but I’m pretty knowledgeable when it comes to sword fighting in my own right. Considering my captain is a swordsman using a cursed blade.”

“I don’t doubt it but my style is much more… enticing than that of your captains,” Killer loved the back-and-forth they already had going.

It took a second for Penguin to realize what Killer was implying and the blush that came to his face was so severe there was no way Killer missed it.

Killer definitely noticed.

He grinned widely, wondering how much that blush spread under his boilersuit. He loved that he could get such a reaction out of Penguin and didn’t think he could keep going on without making it jarringly obvious.

Thinking that he might have been too obvious in his affection, he realized that they’re still in public. He immediately worried that Kid was watching their obvious flirting, but when he glanced to see his friend’s reaction he saw that Kid and Trafalgar were nowhere to be seen.

During this whole interaction, neither had noticed their respective captain’s gaze watching the two try and be subtle with their interest in each other. They were also lost in the fact that both had silently agreed to leave the two first mates and continue their conversation elsewhere.

Penguin had the same realization that Killer had, “It seems our captains have ditched us. If I’m not back too long after Law, Shachi will start interrogating me,” Penguin really didn’t want to leave but if he stayed much longer, Shachi would relentlessly tease him.

“Oh? Why would he question you? It’s not like Law doesn’t know who you’re with,” Penguin knew he backed himself into a corner. He might not be able to see Killer’s face but he knew that if he could, there would be a smirk on the other man’s face.

“Well you know, since Law and Kid left so suddenly they might…get the wrong idea…not that there is any wrong idea or anything like that!” Penguin was rambling and making it all worse.

That made Killer let out a chuckle. Penguin was weak at the knees hearing that deep, rumbling laugh. He really just wanted to stay here all day and listen to the Kid Pirate talk.

Killer might have been bad at billiards but Penguin was bad at subtlety, “No I get where you’re coming from. Heat and Wire will probably question me about the meeting anyway. God knows Kid won’t give up any relevant information.”

“Exactly! Law is totally the same. Yup, never telling us the important things,” Penguin latched onto the excuse Killer gave him, maybe a little too strongly if he’s being honest with himself.

Still chuckling at the embarrassed Penguin, Killer decided to end his misery, “We still up for sparring tomorrow? Midday?”

“Definitely, I’m really looking forward to seeing the…sword skills you mentioned.”

That got a full-body laugh out of Killer that left Penguin speechless. He really was an attractive man, mask and all.

“Me too, I’ll be sure to try and impress.”

Both just stood there with goofy smiles on their faces, not wanting to leave the other. Sadly, it seemed that Shachi got tired of waiting as all of a sudden they weren't alone -- Law did not leave long enough ago to warrant a search party.

“Yo, Peng! What’s taking so long? We still have to get some supplies before the market closes for the day! Or do you have a better…proposition for the night that would take you from your first-mate duties.”

“Shut the hell up Shachi! I’m all good to go! You didn’t have to come fetch me, I am the first mate for a reason. I can take care of myself,” Penguin wanted to leave now to escape whatever atmosphere Shachi created when he decided to open his big mouth.

“I’ll see you tomorrow Killer at the spot we talked about,” Penguin yelled over his shoulder as he shoved Shachi out of the bar.

“Sure thing, see you then,” Killer laughed at the Heart Pirate’s antics.

As they parted ways, neither saw the blush they were both sporting thinking about when they could see the other next. And if Killer walked back to the Victoria Punk with a skip in his step, that was his own business.

Chapter Text

It was finally time to meet up with Killer.

Penguin was beside himself all day. He knew that there were things he could have done before meeting up with Killer but his excitement kept him occupied. Anytime a crewmate tried to talk to him, he would always space out thinking about what he and Killer might get up to later.

If that wasn’t bad, every time Law would pass by him he would smirk and give him a stupid look like he knew everything going on in Penguin's head.

But the wait was over.

Penguin had to reel in his excitement so he didn’t sprint to where they planned to spar. While “reeling it in” might not have worked, he at least slowed down once he saw the clearing.

Holy shit.

Penguin was glad Killer beat him because he was not prepared for the sight that greeted him. Killer had obviously been here a while already, as he had built up a sweat. Right when Penguin walked up, he apparently felt the need to relieve himself of the already skin-tight shirt he had on.

It took all Penguin had not to walk over and trace the Killer’s abs. Did the man not know that he was essentially doing a strip tease for anyone walking by?

While Penguin knew he was a pretty fit guy himself, he could admit that he wasn’t “ripped”. Killer on the other hand?

Jacked.

Penguin had obviously seen other pirates that were in great shape, and even beat the hell out of some of them, but looking at Killer was like witnessing god.

The man was built like a tank. Penguin didn’t think the man had an ounce of fat on him. But he definitely worked it. He was fit in a way that made it seem natural and not like some bodybuilder on steroids.

Penguin felt that even if Law and Kid became enemies, he would die happy after seeing the Kid Pirate after a workout.

Unbeknownst to Penguin, Killer had already seen him running up. He was reveling in how obvious Penguin was in his appreciation of Killer’s body.

While he genuinely was working up a sweat, it was an added bonus to have Penguin ogling him.

“Yo Penguin, you just gonna stand there and stare or are we going to fight?”

The sudden question shocked Penguin out of his lustful stupor, “Of course I’m ready! I want to see those “sword skills” of yours and prove that swords aren’t always the best weapon.”

Penguin headed into the clearing and walked right up to Killer. He spun the bo staff he brought as he taunted him, getting an appreciative glance as he did.

Penguin was not a swordsman by any means so he knew he needed to bring a weapon he was well versed in that would parry well against Killer’s scythes.

Seeing the staff Penguin was holding made Killer chuckle, “A bo staff? Isn’t that a pretty standard martial arts weapon? Come on, do you really think that is going to pose any problem for me?”

“So you’re doubting my skills? I guess we’ll just have to see who’s right. Don’t worry, I’ll take it easy on you so Kid doesn’t come after me to defend your honor,” Penguin smugly shot back.

Killer sputtered, “Defend my honor?! What am I, some damsel in distress?” He was shocked that this was the same person who wouldn’t look him in the eyes the day before.

“Well, if the shoe fits,” Penguin shrugged. He loves that he was able to get such a rise out of Killer. He was on the receiving end of too many teasing remarks yesterday.

“Let's see if that confidence lasts too much longer,” Killer couldn’t believe his luck. Not only was Penguin easy on the eyes (read: the most beautiful person he’s ever seen) but he was also confident enough in his fighting skills to take on Killer.

On that note, Killer lunged.

*****

To say that neither held back would be an understatement. Not even 30 minutes into their spar, both had multiple cuts and bruises.

While Killer might have been right in his appraisal that the bo staff was pretty standard, Penguin killed any thought that it wasn’t just as, if not more, dangerous than a sword.

The same could be said for Killer though. Penguin knew he didn’t get the nickname “Massacre Soldier” for nothing and so far he was living up to it. Penguin knew there would be a difference in their abilities but seeing and experiencing it firsthand was astounding.

Seeing how easily Killer worked with the scythes and how he was able to utilize them without giving up agility or defense left Penguin in awe.

And in pain.

Just as he was about to propose they take a break and cool down, Penguin realized they had an audience.

“While this has been very entertaining, we have to go Penguin,” Law’s order had Penguin tensing up.

“Everything all good Captain?” Even when giving orders and making plans, Law was never this abrupt or curt.

“I just received some news,” Law glanced at Killer, “Our plan seems like it will be going underway sooner than anticipated.”

Shit.

He was talking about the plan.

“But weren’t we waiting until,” If Penguin or Law looked at him one more time during this exchange Killer was going to lose it, “There was more news on that person?”

“It seems like they are on the move from reports I’ve heard. Either way, we have to start getting prepared. We’re leaving the island in 30 minutes so be ready by then.”

The pointed look Law gave Penguin wasn’t missed by either first mate. Penguin gulped knowing that once they left the island, he would most likely be considered an enemy of the Kid Pirates.

As he looked at Killer it seemed that he came to the same conclusion.

“Well, I guess this is it then. I’ll admit I was impressed by your skills, I wish we could have spared longer,” No matter how hard Penguin tried to hide his disappointment it was useless.

Penguin could see his disappointment reflected in the way Killer’s shoulders had slightly slumped. He had only spent a few hours with Killer but noticed that while his face was covered, his body language often gave away his feelings.

“Ya, I guess I’ll leave you to it then. I can go ahead and update Kid that you’re leaving,” Killer didn’t want to impose on their business but he couldn’t bring himself to leave Penguin just yet.

“Trafalgar, you have time to meet up again? Captains and first mates? You know, to just bring it all to a close and cover any last bases?”

“We do not Killer-ya. We have a plan that requires a strict schedule,” Law seemed remorseful for having interrupted the two.

“No problem, that’s understandable. I’ll go ahead and head back then,” He shifted all his focus to Penguin.

“I enjoyed our spar. I hope once we depart we don’t run into each other again.”

Had it been coming from anyone else, Penguin might have felt threatened or offended. But he knew that once they left this island their truce would end and they would become enemies once more.

“Couldn’t have said it better myself Killer,” Penguin’s optimistic countenance deflated and a look of longing crossed his face.

Law watched the two first mates. It was obvious that they were both interested in each other but he hadn’t realized the scope of their infatuation. He really did feel bad for interrupting their fight but in order to successfully take down Doflamingo he had to stick to his plan.

“Let’s go Penguin-ya, we have a lot to do before we dive,” Law needed to cut this goodbye short before poor Penguin started crying.

Killer watched the two Heart Pirates walk away until he couldn’t see them.

Penguin never looked back.

*****

“Hey Peng, how are you doing?” Shachi lightly bumped shoulders with his friend. It had been a few weeks since they left Hajime Island and Penguin had been sulking around the sub ever since.

“Oh, hey Shachi. All good, just getting some last-minute things done before we hit Zou,” They had barely spent any time with Law on Punk Hazard. The whole crew knew the dangers of Law’s plan, but it still felt wrong to leave their captain by himself.

“Ya? Any news on when we might reach Zou? Or you know, any news about any other pirate groups?” That last question made Penguin tense up.

“News about pirate groups?” Penguin gave Shachi a look from the corner of his eyes. He knew what his friend was fishing for but he was not in the mood to play mind games.

“You know, like anyone nearby we should be worried about running into?” Shachi knew he was screwed but he had never been one to think before he spoke.

“No Shachi. No one is nearby. So no need to worry about the crew…or me,” Penguin was fully aware that his pining was concerning the crew. Now that Law was gone, everyone looked to him and his mood to determine their standing.

“Okay okay! Just wanted to check in and make sure. You know Peng, you can talk to me about anything right? I might not get exactly what’s bothering you but I’ve always got your back,” Shachi gave him a beaming grin.

Penguin really was lucky to have such a good crew, “Thanks Shachi, I’ll keep it in mind. For now, let’s just get ready to breach. We should be reaching Zou within the day.”

*****

Killer was exhausted.

They had run into some no-name crew when approaching an upcoming island. They really weren’t all that much of a threat but they just kept coming one after another. After taking down his tenth man, Killer was really starting to feel his frustration.

Suddenly a huge metal fist came out of nowhere. It seemed Kid was done playing around.

“What the fuck Kid! Why the hell have you waited so long to pull that card?!” Killer got up in Kid’s face and yelled.

Kid sneered right back at him, “Calm the hell down! I waited because you have been off your game for weeks and I figured a good fight would help get you out of your funk! Ever since we left that damn Hajime Island you’ve had a shorter fuse than me! How are you supposed to reel me in when you’re just as angry?!”

By this point, their screaming match had got the attention of the rest of the crew.

“Mommy and Daddy are fighting,” Heat whispered to Wire and quickly ducked away from the scrap metal hurtled at him.

“Damn it, Kid. I’ve told you already I’m fine !” At this, Kid grabbed Killer by his collar and dragged him out of earshot from the rest of the crew.

“The fuck you’re not. I know what has you all bothered. Now, are you going to admit to pining for that scrawny Heart Pirate or am I gonna have to beat a confession out of you? Either way, get your shit together and get over it.”

Kid never talked quietly, so Killer knew he was on his last straw by getting lectured in such a hushed tone.

Killer shoved Kid off him, “Like I said, I’ll be fine . Besides, I doubt we’ll see them again anytime soon. According to Trafalgar and Penguin they have some plan and I doubt it involves us.”

Kid just stared at him for a minute. Probably trying to decide whether or not he believed Killer’s claim that he was “fine”. There was a shift in his face that tipped off Killer that he had come to a conclusion.

“Whatever. But if you start sulking right when we get back on the ship I’m whooping your ass.”

Killer grinned, “As if you could lay a hand on me.”

Apparently, that was the right thing to say as Kid’s trademark maniacal look was plastered back on his face.

Killer knew that he needed to reassure Kid he was alright and passed the whole Heart Pirates incident. But if he was being completely honest with himself, he also knew he would be hung up on Penguin until he saw him again.

Unbeknownst to Killer and Penguin, the next time their paths cross will change the trajectory of the entire world.

Unbeknownst to either of them, Penguin and Killer have both ended up in Wano. What happens when they see each other for the first time in over a year?

Chapter Text

Penguin hated this fucking island.

Nothing good had happened since they landed on Wano.

Not only were they wanted by a yonko but their raid plan was exposed and he was in PRISON.

Penguin sighed and glanced at his crew. The panic in Bepo and Shachi’s faces made Penguin feel even more guilty that they had ended up in this position.

Things might be going south now, but he thought they were doing really well keeping things under wraps. How on earth did Orochi figure out their plan…

Penguin shook himself out of those thoughts. Going down that road wouldn’t lead anywhere good, might as well try and find a way out of this situation.

Almost as if someone read his thoughts, there was a sudden commotion outside their prison. Penguin jumped to his feet after recognizing the kimono that was approaching them.

“Captain!” Sobbed Bepo. Penguin rolled his eyes, Bepo was always so dramatic.

“Captain, what are you doing here?! You need to leave before Hawkins sees you!” Penguin urged Law, shoeing him away with his shackled hands.

Law settled his look on his first mate, it was obvious he was not about to take any arguments to whatever he was about to say.

“Good, I was hoping to run into Hawkins here.” As if summoned by his name, Hawkins appeared and placed his sword against Law’s throat.

“Tell me why I shouldn’t kill you all right now,” The look in his eyes said they better give him a damn good reason.

Law calmly glanced at him, “In exchange for my crew's safety, I am willing to…disclose some information to you that Kaido might find interesting.”

Hawkins hesitated, assessing Law to see if he could be trusted to keep his word. He knew that he probably shouldn’t, but it wasn’t every day that Trafalgar Law willingly gave himself up and from what he had seen, the Heart Pirates weren’t much of a threat without their captain.

“Fine. But you’re to be in sea prism chains and locked up before any of them are released. I’m not about to let you use that damn devil fruit of yours.”

Law rolled his eyes, “I guess that’s a reasonable compromise.”

This finally made the Heart Pirates step in.

“Captain, no!”

“Captain, you can’t do this!”

“We’ll be okay, we promise! Don’t do it, Captain!”

That last one was said by a sniffling Shachi who definitely would not be okay. He might be a decent fighter but he wasn’t built for prison. But he didn’t want his captain to get into any trouble and tried putting on a brave face.

Penguin kept his mouth shut. He had seen the look Law gave him while Hawkins contemplated his offer. Law wasn’t going to listen to any of them, and based on the look they shared, he wasn’t planning on being locked up for long.

“Everyone, be quiet! Your captain gave an order so listen up and obey!” It was rare for Penguin to use his authoritative voice, it caused everyone to immediately quiet down. Shachi even had the sense to bow his head a little, showing he would listen no matter how begrudgingly.

Hawkins watched this all unravel with a bored expression. He looked to the closest guard, “Grab some sea prism cuffs and lock him up! That’s a good crew you have there Trafalgar, too bad you won’t see them after this.”

That snide comment sent Bepo off the rails. The bear started crying and wailing, shocking Hawkins. Apparently witnessing a giant white bear start sobbing was enough to surprise the Beast Pirate headliner. Law and Penguin shared an amused look at that. If Law hadn’t given himself up, Penguin bet Bepo’s dramatics would either have gotten them killed or released.

After being released and reassuring Bepo that Law would be okay, the Heart Pirates set out to rendezvous with the Strawhats.

Penguin knew that Law would be okay but there was something in his gut telling him that something else was wrong.

*****

Killer hated this damn island.

He hated Wano.

He hated alliances.

He hated Apo and Hawkins.

He.

Fucking.

Hated.

Kaido.

Just thinking of the yonko maked his blood boil. How dare that drunkard take his captain and threaten his crew.

His sudden anger triggered the newest addition to his list of dislikes.

He hated his laugh.

That damn Orochi. Tricking him into eating that Smile fruit and not keeping his end of the bargain to save Kid and protect his crew. Luckily he had proof his crew was okay but for all he knew Kid was at the bottom of the ocean.

He shook himself out of those thoughts and tried suppressing his laugh. Thinking like that would only make his situation worse.

If Kid was dead what did he have to live for?

He loved his crew but Kid was his best friend. And with his new…condition, he couldn’t face his crew and deliver the news that they lost their captain and that it was his fault.

After their temporary truce with the Heart Pirates and the mess that was their fight with Red Hair Shanks, Killer was the one who pushed Kid to consider an alliance. He knew there was a high chance that it would backfire, but he never could have anticipated that it would turn out this bad.

This time, it was the Beast Pirates escorting him that stopped his train of thought. It seems like they made it to the prison they were going to hold him in. Killer was surprised it took them this long to decide to finally lock him up after the rampage he went on in the Flower Capital.

Even if it was all ordered by Orochi, he made a complete mess of the Flower Capital. He did as Orochi ordered, but that didn’t stop him from taking some matters into his own hands. He had almost been relieved when they arrested him after he failed to kill Roronoa Zoro (he was secretly glad that Zoro was strong enough to survive against him).

He resigned himself to his fate and let them lead him further into the prison. From the looks of it, he was being sent straight to the warden, Queen.

As they approached Killer could have sworn he heard a familiar voice.

No, it can’t be him. Orochi said Kaido plans to kill him. Why would he be in some prison mine?

Killer’s thoughts were interrupted again as he was thrown down in front of Queen and some prisoners he was apparently torturing. As he looked up, his thoughts were confirmed.

There, chained up next to Strawhat Luffy was Kid.

The worry of what would happen to him was temporarily pushed aside for the relief that his friend was alive.

“Faffaffaffa!” The sudden shift in his emotions triggered his curse and he started hysterically laughing. The questions Kid was throwing at him only made it worse.

The fear and apprehension in Kid’s voice just increased the despair Killer was already feeling. His laughter drowned out any questions Kid might have been asking and as his laughter started to die down he realized his captain had gone quiet.

*****

Kid had promised he would get revenge on Kaido and Orochi for what they did to Killer. While Killer fully supported that, this was not what he expected.

He isn’t sure how Kid got them into this, but somehow the Kid Pirates were on their way to Onigashima to help - this part still confused Killer - the Strawhats, the Wano Samurai, and the Heart Pirates.

Considering Kid’s personality, Killer shouldn’t have been surprised that he gave the crew the bare minimum of an explanation, if it could even be called that. All he told them was that they were sailing to Onigashima to “whoop some ass”. It was Killer who had to step in and ask for more clarification on what exactly they were doing.

It wasn’t until they could see the entrance to Onigashima that it finally hit Killer that they were going to see the Heart Pirates. He would be lying to himself if he said he had long forgotten about the Heart Pirate’s first mate.

It was embarrassing how much he thought about him. Ever since the alliance between the Strawhats and the Heart Pirates had been announced he checked every paper for news about Penguin.

He knew the whole raid situation was just another temporary truce between the three pirate crews but he wished he could have at least a little bit of peace with Penguin before they become rivals again. The hour he spent with him on Hajime Island was not nearly enough.

Almost as if being summoned, the Polar Tang appeared next to the Victoria Punk.

Heat materialized on Killer’s right and nudged him while Wire came up on his left and slung his arm around his shoulders.

“Looks like your little boy toy has decided to join the fight, eh Killer?” Killer wished he could smack that smirk off Wire’s face.

Killer started laughing and internally cringed, “Faffaffaffa! You’re lucky we’re about to start fighting or I’d kick both your asses.”

They knew Killer was dead serious about his threat, but the sound of his laughter made both Heat and Wire sober up. They knew that Killer hated his laugh before Wano, so the fact he now had no control over it was heartbreaking to the Kid Pirates. They knew they couldn’t feel or show pity or sadness on behalf of Killer, so anger and violence was their next best option.

“Come on Killer, you wouldn’t put us at such a disadvantage before such a fun fight would you?!” Apparently Heat had found another coping mechanism with humor.

Ignoring both of his idiot crew mates, Killer scanned the Polar Tang for one particular boiler suit-clad pirate.

It was as if they were magnets. The moment Killer caught sight of that silly hat he loved, he immediately made eye contact with its owner.

Time seemed to slow as they both just watched the other. It took a minute for Killer to finally look away, only to assess the state of Penguin. He seemed unharmed, but those boiler suits gave nothing away as to what was underneath. If memory serves, there was plenty Penguin kept hidden under that frumpy boiler suit.

After raking his eyes across Penguin, Killer made eye contact again. It seemed like Penguin was taking his own assessment if the dark blush seen even across the water was anything to go by.

Before Killer could think about possibly calling out to Penguin, what he would say he had no idea, his new condition started acting up. His sudden laughter seemed to shock Penguin. That was quickly replaced by a look of pure rage that surprised Killer.

Why on earth would Penguin be mad? Did he think Killer was laughing at him?

Thinking that was the case, Killer quickly turned and headed toward Kid. It seemed his captain was ready for a fight based on how aggressive he was arguing with Trafalgar and Strawhat Luffy.

In the back of his mind, Killer sent up a small prayer to whoever might be listening to protect Penguin during the raid. Even if he didn’t see him again, he couldn’t live with himself if anything happened to the Heart Pirate.

*****

Penguin couldn't be happier to be back on the Polar Tang. He missed his home and he missed his crew.

His assumption had been right. Law wasn’t locked up for long and he was glad to hear he even got a few shots in on Hawkins before he escaped. They were lucky their raid plan had been salvaged after everything that happened with the samurai.

Despite heading into a battle he might not walk away from, Penguin was in pretty high spirits. Law had explained his plan and Penguin was optimistic, granted knowing the Strawhat crew they would find a way to derail it.

Not only was Penguin excited to keep working with the Strawhats, but he had come to find how Law and Luffy interacted entertaining. He was even more glad to hear they were working with the Kid Pirates again.

Penguin had been following the news of the Kid Pirates ever since they had last seen them. The news that they were betrayed and then captured by the Beast Pirates had Penguin panicking for a solid week.

Hearing that they were free and fighting with them now was reassuring and Penguin couldn’t wait to see and hopefully fight alongside, Killer.

The lack of news regarding the Kid Pirates' first mate was a little concerning, but according to Law, their entire crew would be fighting with them.

With Penguin’s thoughts still revolving around Killer, the Polar Tang breached and they made their way onto the deck.

It seemed that luck was on Penguin’s side as they happened to breach next to the Victoria Punk. Penguin’s eyes immediately found that memorable blue and white helmet and the world stopped.

It had been over a year since Penguin had seen Killer and he was a sight for sore eyes. Even though he couldn’t see his face, Penguin knew they had made eye contact. Lucky for him, it seemed that he had all of Killer’s attention and he reveled in it.

He took his time to assess Killer and how he had changed in the year since they’d first met. There didn’t seem to be any obvious changes, a few scrapes here and there and other than some obvious bulking, Killer was just as he had remembered.

Penguin flushed at how happy he was to see him and how much he appreciated how Killer filled out his blue v-neck.

A roaring laughter shook Penguin out of his stupor making him focus back on Killer.

The abruptness of the laugh reminded Penguin of what Law had told him about what Hawkins said about the fate of some of Orochi’s other prisoners. The knowledge that they subjected Killer to much inhumane treatment made Penguin see red.

How dare they force such a fate on Killer.

Through his anger, he didn’t see the other quickly turn and walk away.

Once he realized he was watching Killer walk away, Penguin was a little dejected but took the opportunity to appreciate the view of the Kid Pirate.

He had all the faith that Killer would survive this fight. Now it was time to get focused and make sure he would be there to celebrate with Killer after all was said and done.

Chapter Text

The Land of Wano has been saved and the reign of Kaido was finally over!

Even with such good news, Penguin felt like something was missing.

Of course, he was glad that everything turned out the way they hoped, with the exception of how badly some people got injured, but he felt like he was still forgetting something important.

Shrugging it off and contributing it to his building exhaustion, Penguin went to check on Law. Considering who their captain was, the Heart Pirates had been tasked with organizing medical relief for those injured during the raid.

Penguin found Law at the center of their field hospital, no surprise there. What was shocking however was who he was (arguing) talking to.

It seemed like Strawhat Luffy had grown quite attached to Law.

When Penguin walked up, Strawhat had his arms wrapped tightly around Law and Kid. He had the biggest smile Penguin had ever seen while the other two captains were scowling and yelling for him to let go.

“Toraooo!” Luffy wined, drawing out the end of his ridiculous nickname, “We’re friends though! Why don’t you come eat with me and Jaggy?!”

Law scowled at the other captain, “Our alliance is over now! And just because we had an alliance does not mean we’re friends! How many times do I have to tell you that?!”

Penguin really wasn’t sure what he was watching or what the hell a “Jaggy” was but he knew if Law saw him he would be dragged into it to save him.

As he was turning to try and avoid that fate, Kid caught his eye. The look he was giving Penguin was unnerving, it was almost as if he was sizing him up.

But why would Kid have any interest or any reason to be wary of Penguin? They just finished fighting along side each other, they shouldn’t be considered enemies again just yet.

He had a sudden realization that made him stumble and in turn, garner the full attention of all three captains. Kid kept giving him a weird look, Strawhat looked excited for a reason no one could guess, and Law was looking at him as if he were his savior, even if he was still scowling.

“Hey birdie, come here real quick!” Penguin was shocked that Kid was the first one to address him out of the three, so he decided to act dumb.

“Who, me?” He questioned, looking around as if there was anyone else who dared get in line of sight of the captains.

“Who else has a stupid little bird hat on?! Of course, I mean you!” It was obvious that his tactics didn’t work, but who would think that Kid was smart enough to see through Penguin’s acting?

Penguin was offended that Kid dared to call his hat stupid ! Before he could defend himself, he felt someone’s presence next to him, just outside of his peripheral vision.

“Faffaffaffa!”

It took Penguin a minute too long to recognize that laugh, thinking that someone was making fun of him. Before he could fully process what was happening, the newcomer spoke up.

“Calm down Kid, Just because you can’t pull off such a cute hat doesn’t mean you have to make fun of the little bird.”

Penguin was about to swing at whoever dared to call him “little bird”, but as soon as he turned to confront the stranger he froze.

His earlier realization had been spot on. The minute he made eye contact with Kid he knew that the thing that had been gnawing at him ever since the raid ended was Killer. He never truly stopped thinking about the other man, but with the relief of a battle won and the subsequent work it created for him, it had sunk further from the forefront of his mind.

He knew that Killer was okay, Kid wouldn’t be goofing off with Law and Strawhat if his first mate was critically injured. Even knowing that though, Penguin was finally at ease and reassured now that he saw him in the flesh.

The bandages wrapped around Killer were still worrisome but that could be addressed later. First, Penguin wanted to take Killer away from these idiots so they would finally talk after so long.

Penguin’s dreamy thoughts of finally getting Killer alone were interrupted when he finally caught up to the conversation.

“Did you just call me little bird?” questioned Penguin, while he didn’t mind the nickname if it came from Killer, it was still something he had never heard before.

“Yes I did,” Killer replied unapologetically, “it won’t be the last time, so I suggest you get used to it.”

Killer’s boldness appalled Penguin, making him attempt to hide his burning blush. In trying to avoid Killer’s gaze, he gave the three captains a front-row seat to his embarrassment.

Strawhat was still beaming at Kid and Law but paused for a second to assess the situation. Apparently whatever he saw was either not interesting enough for him or easily discernible as he almost immediately went back to bothering the other captains.

Kid still had a strange look on his face, but this time it was directed at Killer. From what Penguin could tell, all of Kid’s facial expressions were weird. But if he looked closely he could see a bit of exasperation and fondness in his eyes.

Law, with his perpetual scowl, committed his full attention to the scene. Penguin knew that he was transparent to his captain but seeing the understanding in his eyes only made him more embarrassed.

“Let's leave these losers to their fighting. Do you want to join the feast with me, Penguin?” Killer addressed him, completely ignoring the spectacle that was their captains.

“Please!” Penguin answered a little too quickly, grabbing Killer's wrist and dragging him away.

Killer was a little surprised to be grabbed so quickly, but once he realized that the person he had been obsessing over for almost two years was dragging him away to spend time together, no one could ruin his mood.

Penguin apparently didn’t realize he was still holding Killer’s wrist as he didn’t let it go once they were out of eye-shot from the captains and had joined the larger party. Penguin kept dragging Killer around, looking for the best place to stop and try and wrestle some food. He ended up finding a spot away from the large group of celebrating samurai that still had some food and booze.

It seemed that Penguin had finally realized he was dragging Killer along through his whole search. The minute he finally stopped and calmed down he dropped Killer’s wrist like it burned him. If Killer was being honest, he was a little upset that Penguin wasn’t touching him anymore but that was quickly amended when Penguin sat down and patted the spot next to him.

To say Penguin was nervous would be an understatement. Of course, he wanted to spend time with Killer, but he just dragged the man along with him without even asking! Killer had almost died in the raid, why would he want to spend time with someone from another crew when he could be spending time with his own?

Penguin decided to ignore the fact that Killer was the one to ask if he wanted to go to the feast together . He was probably just asking to be polite and save both of them from that awkward encounter with the insane captains. He’s really not sure why he patted the spot next to him, he wasn’t expecting Killer to take the offer.

That thought was quickly forgotten when Killer sat next to him so close there was essentially no space between the two. Penguin immediately froze, unsure if Killer did it on purpose or not.

While Penguin was having his existential crisis, Killer was sitting next to him smug. He knew that sitting so close would fluster Penguin and probably send him into a spiral so he decided he would give him some time to process before he said anything.

“So…what’s up?” The sudden question made Killer bark out a laugh. A genuine laugh.

“What’s up? Come on Little Bird, I think we’re past simple pleasantries,” Killer finally looked at Penguin, and he was shocked by what he saw.

Penguin’s hat had slid a little out of place in his rush to get away earlier, so Killer could finally see his whole face. And with that the look of pure awe he had as he assessed Killer. His eyes were wide and full of something Killer didn’t want to think too hard about without getting his hopes up. His jaw had dropped a little in his surprise and Killer couldn’t look away. He wasn’t sure what he did or said that got this reaction from him but whatever it was he would make sure to keep doing.

“You have an amazing laugh,” Penguin all but whispered. He couldn’t believe such a beautiful sound came from such a beast of a man. This laugh was so different from the one he heard earlier. Even though it was like someone had ripped it out of him, it was so sudden, it was still deep and hearty. When he heard it, Penguin felt a warmth that surrounded him and made him feel safe. Hearing something like that come from such a dangerous man was somewhat contradictory but Penguin thought that his laugh fit him well.

Penguin’s sudden compliment surprised Killer. He turned away and scratched the back of his neck in embarrassment.

“It’s really nothing to write home about. I don’t really like it and try not to laugh much. Especially now with my…condition,” He glanced back at Penguin once he mentioned his new ailment.

Penguin wasn’t deterred, if anything he looked even more resolved.

“No. I like your laugh. You might not, but no matter if it's your real laugh or not, you won’t hear any complaints from me.”

His resolution was admirable, Killer could admit, and the conviction he spoke with was enough to make Killer actually believe what he was saying.

“I’ll take your word for it,” Killer acquiesced. Penguin happily nodded as if he were a child who finally got his way.

“Really though, how are you? You fought with Hawkins, right? I’ll be honest, I’m a little jealous you got to him before I did,” Penguin had wanted to find Hawkins and get revenge for what he did to Law and his crew. But if he had to let anyone get him first, he was glad it was Killer.

“Yes, I did. He put up a good fight but was too confident and didn’t take into consideration who his opponent was,” Penguin could tell there was probably a bit of a story there but decided to drop it unless Killer brought it up.

“Sorry I got to him before you though. I heard a lot of your crew was there when Trafalgar and Kid fought Big Mom, are you okay?” Killer had heard that a few of the pirates in the vicinity of that fight had almost lost their lives to Big Mom’s devil fruit.

“Oh, I’m fine. I was actually in charge of the Polar Tang with a few crew mates while Law and some others fought in the raid. We’re all lucky Law thought to keep the Polar Tang nearby, at one point we had to fetch Strawhat out of the ocean. If I’m being honest, I’m still not really sure I understand what happened to him.”

Penguin felt some of the tension leave Killer when he mentioned he wasn’t near any of the fighting. His heart warmed at the obvious concern the other pirate was showing for him.

“I’m not sure either what happened with him, but without you I doubt we would have had the same outcome,” Killer’s flattery made Penguin blush, but he didn’t hide it this time. He gave Killer a wide smile instead and looked where he thought the masked pirates' eyes were.

Killer loved that smile. How could he not? Penguin practically lit up when he looked at Killer with such a blinding smile. Not only that, but he had somehow looked directly into his eyes. Killer will always be impressed by how Penguin can always find just the right spot to make eye contact.

They both sat there in silence for a minute. Both with silly grins on their faces looking at each other. Killer had the upper hand and was actually able to see most Penguin’s face. He took this opportunity to try his best to memorize every detail of what was visible under the brim of his hat.

With Penguin giving him such a smitten look, Killer came to a decision.

He just had to gather enough courage to go through with it.

After a couple of minutes, it seemed like Penguin had got his fill of looking at a blank mask and decided that he would finally take part in the feast in front of them. Penguin dug in and started making himself and Killer a plate, Killer couldn’t get over how cute it was that Penguin was making him a plate.

Killer kept internally talking himself up and looked around to make sure they were in a secluded enough spot to enact his plan, if it could even be called a plan. After reassuring himself that no one was close enough to see what they were doing, he tapped Penguin’s shoulder.

As Penguin looked up at Killer in question, he saw the Kid Pirate reach his hand towards the side of his mask and click some hidden button.

Penguin’s eyes widened as he realized what Killer was doing. He looked around in panic that someone might see them.

Once he realized that they were essentially alone, he turned his attention back to the unmasked man in front of him.

Notes:

I started a new job so it has been a little difficult to find time to write but let me know what you think!

Still not 100% sure how I want to end the fic but I 100% do NOT want to follow canon (the manga is making me depressed) so there's probably only 1 more chapter left (?)

Summary:

Penguin can see Killer's face right now.
Penguin is looking at Killer's face right now.
Penguin never wants to look away.
Penguin can die happy.

Notes:

I just finished a Zosan fic where I wrote a bunch of detailed descriptions, so I was determined to give Killer's face the justice it deserves.

I wanted to get this posted so I didn't get my beta to read it yet so ignore any grammar and spelling issues.

Chapter Text

“Fuck.”

Penguin’s life was changed.

How could he go on knowing that Killer was so damn beautiful?

It felt somewhat odd thinking of a man as beautiful, but Penguin couldn't think of another word to describe him. He had very masculine looks, but handsome and attractive were way too generic for the man in front of him.

Astonishing?

Bewitching?

Modern Day Adonis?

All of the above?

Penguin will admit, he had seen some pretty attractive people. He’ll be the first to point out and appreciate a pretty face, but Killer surpassed anyone he had ever seen.

Killer’s face was almost perfectly symmetrical, Penguin never realized that was something he found so attractive. For someone who got into a lot of fights, he had a straight nose, the helmet probably helped with that. His jaw and cheekbones were sharp but still alluded to the overall strength of the man. Penguin smiled at the blonde goatee he was sporting. He had seen it peeking out from under the helmet but he had to admit after seeing it fully, he thought it complimented Killer well.

Penguin quickly looked up though, finding what he had been most curious about. He smiled at what he found. Of course, Killer had the most beautiful blue eyes Penguin had ever seen. Penguin had been sailing for almost longer than he could remember and he had seen countless different oceans and seas. But he had never seen anything as blue as Killer’s eyes.

It wasn’t that they were just blue or that they were exceptionally bright blue, but if someone were to ask to describe what ‘blue’ meant it would be this. The depth of them is what first took Penguin’s breath away. The variation in color made it seem like he was drowning when he looked directly at them.

Finally looking at Killer’s face as a whole rather than each individually beautiful aspect was what finished Penguin.

He could die happy.

It took Penguin a minute to shake himself out of his awe, once he did he noticed the nervous way Killer was fidgeting. Penguin was so engrossed with committing Killer’s appearance to memory, that he completely forgot that it might make the other uncomfortable.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry for staring!” Penguin made a point to avert his eyes and give Killer his privacy. Now that he thought about it, it was incredibly rude of him to stare so blatantly at someone who wore a helmet 24/7.

“Hurry up and eat so you can put the helmet back on. Shit, let me find you somewhere else to eat so no one sees. Damn it Killer, why did you take off the helmet?! Anyone could see you right now!” Penguin was panicking, looking around to make sure there were no stray samurai. He felt a hand on his arm as he turned to find somewhere more secluded for them.

When he turned to explain that to Killer, he did a double take at the look on his face. Was Killer…embarrassed? He had a deep flush on his face and his eyes kept darting around, looking everywhere except for at Penguin.

“What’s wrong Killer?” The way he was acting confused and worried Penguin.

“You- you don’t have to leave. I wouldn’t have taken it off if I didn’t want to,” Killer admitted, finally looking at Penguin who stood there in shock.

Does Killer realize what he might have just admitted?

“I’m going to need you to be very clear about what you mean by that so I don’t get any ideas.”

“I mean , that if it’s around you, I don’t mind having the helmet off,” Penguin being so straightforward must have inspired Killer to do the same.

Penguin felt lightheaded. Did Killer want to be this vulnerable with Penguin? While Killer might have cleared up the surface-level meaning of the act, Penguin’s mind was still reeling at other possible implications.

Was Killer really that comfortable around Penguin? They had only interacted a handful of times, so what does this mean? Does Killer see Penguin as a friend? Does Killer potentially see Penguin as something more than a friend?

Penguin started to spiral again and didn’t notice Killer take his hand away and start fidgeting again.

“Umm if I made you uncomfortable I can just put it back on. I get it, no hard feelings,” That snapped Penguin out of his thoughts.

Alarmed, he quickly grabbed the hand that was reaching for Killer’s helmet.

“No! I’m not uncomfortable at all! Pretty much the opposite! I was just shocked by how beautiful you are and didn’t realize I had been staring for so long or that you might be uncomfortable! Please, don’t put it back on, not on my account!”

It was Killer’s turn to be startled. Penguin wasn’t uncomfortable? Pretty much everyone who had seen him was disturbed by how different his aura was compared to his looks. It wasn’t necessarily that people thought he was ugly, but they were always put off that what was under the mask wasn’t what they expected from a man with Killer’s reputation.

“B- beautiful?” Killer stuttered out. When was the last time he stuttered? Had he ever stuttered in his life? What was Penguin doing to him?

Penguin vehemently nods back at him, “Yes! Beautiful. You are beautiful and if anyone tells you differently, let me know and I’ll beat them up.”

That finally gets a lopsided smile out of Killer, “Okay, I’ll hold you to that.”

Penguin was still awestruck by how angelic Killer was. Why would he keep himself hidden?

“Why are you so surprised that I find you so attractive?” Penguin really couldn’t keep his thoughts to himself.

“Oh. Umm, it’s just a self-conscious thing. From some stuff that happened forever ago. Nothing you need to concern yourself with,” Killer’s smile quickly fell at that question and Penguin could see him pull into himself a little at the admission.

“That’s fine! It’s none of my business anyway. All that matters is that you’re comfortable with showing me now. That’s all I care about.”

Killer loosened up at that, thankful that Penguin was being so understanding with his hesitance to divulge his past. While Killer was back to being embarrassed about showing Penguin his face, his curiosity about the other grew. Penguin didn’t hide his face nearly to the same degree that Killer did, but that’s not to say there wasn’t some mystery as to what else was hidden below the brim of his hat.

Penguin could tell where Killer’s thoughts were going. He watched the blonde rake his eyes over the visible parts of his face and scowl slightly at the hat covering up the rest.

“You know, if you were so curious as to what I’m hiding under my hat, all you had to do was ask. It’s only fair that I show you mine after you showed me yours,” Penguin told him with a smirk as he reached for the bill of his hat.

Killer’s eyes widened at getting caught red-handed and at Penguin’s subtle innuendo.

“You don’t have to! I underst–” Killer cut himself off once Penguin fully takes off the cute penguin hat Killer’s never seen him without.

He now understands why the sight of his face made Penguin speechless. Killer couldn’t look away and at the same time, wasn’t sure where to look first.

He saw that Penguin had a little smirk on his face, almost like he was saying, I know I’m pretty, take your time.

Killer took that as an invitation.

If Penguin thought Killer was beautiful, Killer wasn’t sure what word he would use to describe Penguin. He was obviously pretty and handsome, but he had almost a boyish charm to his facial expressions that made his looks lean more towards the cute side. Even with those boyish good looks, he still looked every bit of the man he is. Wait a minute, does Killer even know how old Penguin is? That doesn’t matter right now, he’ll find out later.

It was interesting to see what Penguin’s hat hid. Killer wasn’t sure what color hair he thought Penguin had but he wasn’t upset with what he found. Penguin’s hair was an ashy light brown and was styled into a wolf cut that framed his face well. He had a slightly crooked nose that had obviously been broken in a couple of fights, but he must have had Trafalgar fix for him based on how well it healed.

Penguin’s eyes were probably his favorite feature of the smaller pirate. He had a glimpse of them when they met on Hajime Island a while back, but Killer didn’t realize how much his hat shaded them. Instead of being hazel, like Killer initially thought, Penguin’s eyes were lighter, more of a cross between brown and a golden hazel but were nevertheless warm and welcoming. Looking into his eyes was like sitting by a warm fire during the winter. It was like seeing land after being at sea for weeks. Killer could probably keep making comparisons but something else caught his eye.

“What happened?” Killer whispered.

Just above Penguin’s right eye was a scar. Killer was surprised that he hadn’t noticed it before considering how often he stared at Penguin’s face. From what he could see of it, it went from his hairline, curved in about an inch, and then dropped to his eyebrow. It had to have been a deep cut to leave such a bad scar. As Killer looked at it more, he realized it must have happened when Penguin was a child. The age of such a deep scar was almost as shocking as the fact that Trafalgar hadn’t fixed it for him.

Penguin watched in silence while Killer took his time taking in his features. When he asked the question that Penguin had been waiting for, he sucked in a breath and tried to relax before recounting the cause of such a bad cut.

“It happened long before I became a pirate and met Law. I- I didn’t really live in the best part of the North Blue. I mean, there isn’t really a good part of the North Blue but where I grew up, there was a lot of human trafficking,” Penguin saw Killer’s fists clench with that knowledge and reached out to grab them.

As he slowly pried open Killer’s hands, he continued, “I was lucky. My parents thought it necessary to keep me to help around the small shop they ran. Now I can admit I’m glad they kept me around, but as a kid, I almost wished they had sold me off.”

Penguin took a deep breath before continuing, “They honestly only kept me because I was useful. I know that if there was ever a point they didn’t deem me necessary, they would have sold me off to the highest bidder. If you haven’t realized by now, they weren’t the best parents. I got this scar after my father shoved me into a display with glass jars. I don’t even remember what I had done that upset him so much, but after breaking everything on the shelf, I got one of the worst beatings of my life.”

Penguin hadn’t realized his hands had started shaking until he felt Killer’s grab onto them tightly.

“I ran away after I had healed up some. Shachi wasn’t in a much better situation so he ran away with me. We met Law a few years after that, by then it was too late to totally heal the scar and I honestly didn’t want him to. I wanted to leave it as a reminder to never let anyone use me like that again. I keep it hidden mainly so people don’t stare, and it just so happens to help that the World Government doesn’t actually know what my face looks like,” Penguin let out a humorless chuckle at the little quip he made. Throughout his story, he had stopped looking Killer in the eyes and was now staring at their joined hands. He jolted a little as Killer started moving his hand and looked back up to see what he was going to do.

Killer lifted his hand and held the side of Penguin’s face in his palm. He softly brushed over the scar with the pad of his thumb.

“God, you’re magnificent,” Killer whispered between the two. How on earth could Penguin be even more amazing? He became stronger because of everything he went through instead of shutting down like Killer had seen many do before in similar situations.

“I mean, I’m not that amazing. A ton of people go through so much worse. You should hear Law’s story sometime, shit’s fucked up,” Penguin tried laughing off his embarrassment. He had never had someone react to his story like that before, let alone someone he was interested in.

Killer used both hands to grab Penguin’s face and turn it so he could look him in the eyes, “Penguin, I don’t care what you or anyone else says. You. Are. Magnificent. If anyone tells you differently, let me know and I’ll beat them up,” Killer winks after using Penguin’s own words against him.

He pouted back at Killer, “That’s not fair, you’re way more intimidating than me. You just need to show someone your scythes and they’ll agree with whatever you say.”

At the sight of Penguin’s pout, Killer groaned, “Damn Penguin, you’re really unfair.”

“Huh? How?! You know I’m right! Your massive muscles would totally scare anyone who tried to argue with you! Not me though, I like muscles,” Penguin gave Killer a cheeky grin.

Killer shook his head and gave Penguin a contemplative look.

“What? What’s with that look? You know if you try arguing with me you won’t win! I’ve been winning arguments against Shachi for–”

“Can I kiss you?” Killer cut off Penguin’s nervous rant. Killer’s eyes drifted down to Penguin’s mouth as he snapped it shut.

“What?”

The question seemed to snap Killer out of whatever trance he was in and he quickly pulled his hands away.

“Oh my god. I’m so sorry, forget I said anything. I need to go. I should probably go and make sure my crew isn’t doing anything stupid,” Killer turned to reach for his helmet. He shook his head, disappointed in himself. Did he really think Penguin would want to kiss him? Had he just read their entire interaction wrong?

Before he can reach his helmet though, there’s a hand on his arm stopping him and another on his shoulder turning him back around.

“No! I mean, yes! I mean, where are you going?!” Penguin was frantic and panicking.

“What are you talking about?” Killer decided playing dumb would probably hurt less than fully accepting the rejection that was sure to come.

“I’m sorry, I was just surprised is all! I thought I was the only one who…” Penguin hesitated, but eventually looked Killer in the eyes and said, “I thought I was the only one who felt this way.” Killer was taken aback by Penguin’s sudden confession, but once he fully processed what he said, he whipped his head up to look at Penguin.

“What?”

“Ughh! I said that I thought I was the only one who felt that way! I was afraid of making a move because as much as I love it, you’re an intimidating man! So I didn’t even consider the fact that you would be the one to finally make a move!” Penguin was scared of how bold he was being, but the butterflies in his stomach still flared up. He was breathing hard after yelling and talking so much but kept going.

“Now. Ask me again.”

“What?”

“‘ What? ’ Is that all you can say now?! I said, ask me again if you can kiss me damn it!”

Killer still wasn’t sure if he knew what was going on right now, but he did as he was told, “Can I kiss you?”

“Finally” With that, Penguin grabbed Killer by the front of his shirt and kissed him.

Notes:

I absolutely love this fanart of Killer, so this is what his description is loosely based on: Killer's Face Inspo
Penguin on the other hand it just my headcanon of what I want him to look like.

Hehe was going over some earlier chapters to see if there were any edits to make and realized I already described Penguin's eyes so his description is going to change some

Chapter Text

What is happening right now?

Killer sat frozen, unsure as to whether or not what just happened was real life. Did Penguin just manhandle him?! Wait. Was Penguin kissing him right now?!

It seemed that Killer’s unresponsiveness was apparent to Penguin and he pulled away, “What the hell Killer? You’re the one who asked to kiss me so why are you sitting there like a statue?”

Killer could hear the frustration in Penguin’s voice and completely agreed with what he was saying. He is the one who asked if they could kiss so why on earth was he standing there like a statue?

“I mean seriously Killer! If you don’t actually want to, why the hell ask me in the first place? Obviously, this was a mistake. My bad for pressuring you. I’m going to go, so make sure to put your helmet back on before anyone comes and sees,” Penguin’s frustration was fading and turning into self-consciousness. Penguin couldn’t believe he let himself get his hopes up so much. He couldn’t believe that Killer let him get his hopes up so much. He shook his head, disappointed in himself. He let go of Killer and went to reach for his hat when he saw a hand grab it out of his reach.

“What the hell Killer?! Give it back! If you need something, use your wor-” Penguin was suddenly cut off by Killer.

Or more specifically Killer’s mouth.

Oh so now he decides to kiss him back.

That doesn’t stop Penguin from enthusiastically reciprocating the sudden kiss. Apparently, he was a little too enthusiastic, and Killer quickly pulled away.

“Sorry I cut you off. I didn’t want you to leave.”

“I’ll forgive you if you kiss me again,” Penguin wiggled his eyebrows and gave Killer a teasing smirk. Killer rolled his eyes at Penguin's antics but decided to indulge the other man.

Killer pulled Penguin closer to him by the back of his neck and leaned down to kiss him. Penguin was already waiting and immediately accepted the kiss Killer gave him. Penguin needed his hands on Killer. He grabbed Killer’s shirt in his fist to pull him in closer and deepened the kiss. His other arm wrapped around Killer’s shoulders and he tilted his head to get a better angle.

They were sitting next to each other with their bodies turned in towards to other. They’re practically glued together after Penguin pulled Killer closer. Killer decided to take it into his own hands to solidify their connection.

Literally.

Killer wrapped his hands around Penguin’s waist and lifted him onto his lap. Penguin yelped at the sudden manhandling and blushed at how much he actually liked it.

“Eager much?” Penguin teased him.

“Shut up,” Killer didn’t give him a chance to respond as he quickly instigated their kiss.

Penguin was breathless. Who knew that a man who had a mask covering his face 24/7 could kiss so good? Penguin pulled away to take a breath and Killer started kissing along his jaw. His hands had moved from Penguin’s waist and started feeling along his back, slowly going lower and lower.

“Fuck. Killer,” Penguin tilted his head back to give Killer plenty of room to do whatever he wanted. His hands were also on the move. One running through Killer beautiful long, golden hair. His other was on Killer’s shoulder to help him keep his balance and help pull Killer closer. Penguin wanted Killer as close as possible.

He jumped a little when he felt Killer’s thumbs rubbing just under the edge of his shirt. Penguin will forever be thankful he pulled down the top of his boilersuit. He lifted Killer’s head from his neck and started kissing him again. He decided that if the other man wanted to finally move his hands, he wouldn’t stop him.

Killer wasn’t fairing much better. He’s still somewhat shocked that he’s in this position with Penguin, ignoring the fact that he’s the one who literally put them in this position. He had been trying to build up the confidence to move things on a little. It seemed that while Penguin wouldn’t stop any of his advances, he also wasn’t going to be the one to make the next move. Killer thought he was trying to get back at him for being such an idiot earlier and he honestly couldn’t blame him.

With that thought, Killer slowly started caressing the skin just under the edge of Penguin’s shirt. Killer honestly wasn’t sure what he would have done had Penguin kept his boilersuit zipped up, so he’s thankful for that.

Feeling Penguin pull him back up to kiss him again, Killer took the opportunity to slip his hands under the smaller man’s shirt. He settled his hands on Penguin’s waist, rubbing his hips with his thumbs. He was trying to stay respectful but it was proving difficult with the noises Penguin started making. Killer tucked his head back in Penguin’s shoulder to hide his blush.

He went back to kissing along Penguin’s neck and collarbone. Penguin’s breath hitched. Killer could hear him let out breathy little sighs and felt him tilt his head back again. Killer’s grip on his waist tightened and he pulled him closer as Penguin’s head leaned back.

Penguin got even more settled on Killer’s lap as he was pulled closer to the other man. He relaxed into the hold Killer had on him and wrapped both arms around Killer’s shoulders to keep himself closer to him.

Killer slowed down his exploration of Penguin’s neck and started leaving softer, sweeter kisses on him. Penguin relaxed even more into Killer’s coddling and tilted his head forward again to rest it on Killer’s shoulder.

The heat of their embrace started to dissipate, leaving behind a pleasant warmth between the two. Killer ended up resting his head on Penguin’s shoulder as well. They both turned to look each other in the eyes, enjoying just being with the other.

“I’m glad you’re okay. I’m not sure what I would have done if you got really hurt during the raid,” Penguin admitted to Killer. It was something that had been bothering him for a while and it felt nice to finally verbalize his worries.

Killer ran his hands along Penguin’s back in comfort, “I know what you mean. When I saw you before the raid, I was so excited to see you but so anxious at the same time. I was ready to jump over to the sub and stick with you the whole time.”

Before Penguin had a chance to argue with him, Killer continued, “I know, I know. You’re strong and can take care of yourself. That isn’t going to stop me from worrying though. I’m selfishly glad that Law made you stay on the sub during the raid.”

Penguin rolled his eyes at that, “If only you knew how much of an argument we got into because of that. I was so mad, still am, to be honest. I’m the first mate and I was essentially benched during one of the biggest fights of our lives. I was so mad that he let Shachi and Bepo go with him instead of me, I thought he was punishing me for what happened in the Flower Capital.”

That made Killer give him a confused look, Penguin waved him off though, “That’s a story for another time. I asked Law after the raid why he made me stay on the sub. He admitted that he thought there might be a time when he would need the sub for something, obviously, he was right.”

Penguin cast his eyes down, embarrassed about what he was about to admit, “He also said that he knew if you and I were both at the raid and I saw you fighting, I would get distracted. He said that he didn’t want me to get hurt or do something stupid because of my feelings for you.”

They sat in silence for a moment after that admission. Killer was surprised by how much Law’s reasoning actually made sense. He could admit that if he had seen Penguin fighting during the raid he would have been distracted and would have tried going to his aid no matter what Kid told him to do.

They both settled back into their comfortable embrace after processing what Penguin said, exchanging a kiss every now and then. Penguin was about to fall asleep from the warmth of the man against him and the feel of Killer’s breathing. Right before he passed into the land of dreams he felt Killer stiffen.

“Well, well, well. We were wondering where you ran off to, Killer.”

Notes:

I really don't think that this is necessarily "mature" content but I wanted to cover my bases so I changed the tag.

I said a few chapter ago that this fic would be ending soon...I lied. I know how its going to end but it might take a few more chapters than I said it would.

Chapter 9

Summary:

Killer and Penguin are interrupted AND receive some bad news.

They're day is taking a turn for the worse.

I did use some quotes from the actual manga to try and stay at least in the vicinity of canon.

Chapter Text

Killer was frozen. How had he not noticed anyone approaching? Well, the answer to that was currently sitting in his lap, just as surprised as he was about the newcomer.

Killer shifted just so that he could look over Penguin’s head to see who had interrupted them. He was almost positive he knew who had walked up, but he still made sure to keep a majority of his face covered just in case. When he saw the two men who had approached them, he rolled his eyes and sighed.

As he returned to his previous position, he asked, “What the hell do you guys want, Heat and Wire?”

Penguin had been watching him the entire time, trying to gauge his reactions about who snuck up on them. At the sound of the two Kid Pirates' names, his eyes widened and he attempted to untangle himself from Killer.

Key word: attempted.

Killer gave him a look of confusion when he felt Penguin start moving and tightened his hold on him.

“Killer, let me go. Your crewmates are right there,” Penguin insisted, still trying to pull away.

Killer cut his eyes over to Penguin, “They’re not staying. Right guys?”

Heat laughed at that, “Now why would we do that Kil? This is just getting interesting! Now, be a good boy and introduce us to your friend!”

“Yeah, Killer. Is that a Heart Pirate boiler suit? Tsk tsk, Kil, what would Captain say?!” Wire chimed in.

“Kid would tell you to fuck off and mind your own business. Besides, do you really think I’m the only one fraternizing with a Heart Pirate? If I remember correctly, both of you were asking me for the name of the little redhead with the whale hat.”

That got Penguin’s attention, he stopped struggling against Killer to look over at Heat and Wire in surprise.

“Shachi? You guys were asking about Shachi?”

“Is that his name?!” Heat perked up at that information and moved closer to the two, almost as if he were trying to hear a secret.

Penguin looked at him in apprehension, “Ya, he was one of the first Heart Pirates along with me and Bepo. Why were you asking Kil about it?”

Killer’s heart sped up when Penguin referred to him by his nickname. Damn, Killer was screwed.

Heat and Wire both avoided Penguin’s probing stare and refused to answer.

“Well Little Bird, they’re interested in that friend of yours but don’t have the guts to do anything about it,” If Penguin was going to fluster Killer, he might as well return the favor. And it seemed to work. At the sound of the new pet name Killer used, Penguin quickly looked back and glared at him. Unfortunately for Penguin, the blush on his cheeks killed the threatening aura he was trying to give off and instead just made him look cuter to Killer.

It was at this point that Killer realized Penguin still had his hat off. He quickly reached for it and pulled it over Penguin’s head as far as he could. Penguin let out a yelp in surprise, confused by Killer’s sudden movement.

“What was that for?”

“I don’t want them seeing. You’re my Little Bird. They have no right to see what you would normally keep hidden,” Killer’s tone told him there was no room for argument on the matter. Not that Penguin would argue with him. It was sweet that Killer cared so much about his privacy and he had honestly forgotten about taking it off.

“Are you really going to stick with the whole ‘Little Bird’ thing? I didn’t think you were serious, it’s so embarrassing!”

Killer grinned at Penguin as he pouted about the name, “Yes, it’s staying. But so you don’t get embarrassed, I’ll only say it when it’s just us. Deal?”

“Hmmm, deal,” If Penguin was being honest, the name was embarrassing but he kind of liked hearing it come from Killer.

“Will you seal the deal?” Killer wiggled his eyebrows at Penguin, making him giggle. He nodded in agreement and leaned in to kiss the other man.

Right when Killer was about to deepen their kiss, he heard a throat clear again.

“Sorry to interrupt you love birds, but can we get back to the reason why we came looking for you?” Killer was going to kill Wire the next time he interrupted him and Penguin. He shot a glare at his crewmates, who both held up their hands in surrender.

“We actually came looking for you both. The Kid Pirates, Heart Pirates, and Strawhats are meeting up soon to decide how to go about leaving the island. They started getting into an argument about who would go which way and Trafalgar called a meeting with all crews.”

That killed the vibe. Killer knew they were going to need a plan to leave soon, but he was hoping the negotiations could wait until closer to their departure. He knew Kid planned to stay a little longer to give everyone some time to heal, but he still hoped they could all stay together for a while longer.

Penguin gave a resigned sigh, having the same train of thought as Killer. He moved to get up off of Killer but was grabbed and pulled into a fierce kiss. He quickly returned it, not knowing when the next opportunity to be alone with Killer would be.

After Killer released him, they both stood and Penguin handed Killer his helmet. He gave him one last longing look before replacing his helmet. After they’re both settled, they go to follow Heat and Wire to the gathering. Both Kid Pirates are giving them pitying looks, feeling guilty for interrupting such an important moment for their first mate.

Wire grabbed Penguin’s arm before he could pass him and join his own crew, “Hey, we’re still not done asking questions about Shachi. Killer wasn’t joking when he said we’re interested.”

Penguin rolled his eyes at that, “If you want to know more about Shachi, you’re going to have to ask him yourself. Since we’re about to all split, I would make it quick,” Penguin turned to join Law before he thought of something else, “Oh, and make sure to be clear about whatever it is you’re wanting from him. He can be skittish and jumpy, so keep that in mind.”

Penguin chuckled to himself, he had their full attention. Both were giving him their rapt attention, so when Penguin started walking away, they almost followed.

“Not right now you idiots! At least wait until after the meeting! Shit, how does Kil deal with you both?” Heat gave him an insulted look and Wire looked like a kicked puppy, “Ugh, fine. I’ll put in a good word for you so you better not fuck it up!”

Penguin pointed at them in a warning and finally moved to join his crew. He sat next to Law with a heavy sigh.

“Where have you been Penguin-ya? You missed some pretty important discussions,” The look Law was giving him let Penguin know he knew exactly where he had been and who he had been with.

“I’m here now, aren’t I? Besides, I thought we were waiting a couple more days before we leave?”

Law gave him a blank stare at the attitude, “That’s still the plan, but Eustass-ya was getting impatient and wanted to decide what route everyone would be taking, hence our current predicament.”

Penguin spaced out once the negotiations started, Law is always in charge of decisions and plan-making, so he wasn’t really sure why he was needed at this meeting.

The whole meeting was loud, with Kid and Strawhat Luffy together it was bound to be chaotic, but something Kid said grabbed Penguin’s attention.

“Don’t get all buddy with them!!! Stay on your guard until we’re able to leave!!” Penguin was getting more nervous the more he spoke, “Somehow, somewhere, the intel will leak…and the papers will hear about it. They’ll be after us as replacements for the Four Emperors!!”

No. Kid can’t be implying what he thinks he is.

“He’s right.”

Penguin quickly looked to Law. No.

“They can’t see us from the outside of the closed nation..but we can’t see what the enemy’s doing either.”

Penguin started to panic at what Kid and Law were insinuating and stopped paying attention to the chaos around him. He knew that after taking down Big Mom and Kaido the World Government would be looking for their replacements. He also knew that each captain involved in their downfall would be a candidate for the title. What he didn’t anticipate was the captains' insistence on not fraternizing with each other.

Logically, it made sense to Penguin. But if he was being subjective, he was pissed. Right when he and Killer had made progress in their relationship, they were told not to be seen together?! He considered trying to secretly meet, but with them both being the first mate of their respective crew, it would be impossible to find a time when they were both free and somehow ditch their crew.

Penguin looked to Killer to see his reaction. While his face was covered again, he could see the tension in his shoulders and his clenched fists. It seemed Killer wasn’t a fan of this news either. Penguin tried subtly catching his eye but Killer was focused on glaring at his captain, who just so happened to be sharing a challenging look with Law.

Penguin still wasn’t sure what was up with those two but he was starting to get pissed that it was interfering with him and Killer. Penguin elbowed Law and motioned to a more secluded area to talk in. Law raised his eyebrows at him but nodded and got up to follow Penguin.

Chapter Text

Law followed Penguin to a quiet spot away from the meeting. He knew what Penguin was so worried about but was curious if he was going to be upfront about it or play it off as something else. Law already knew how he would handle either option, but he was still interested to see what Penguin would say.

Law stood there for a minute while Penguin paced in front of him, glancing at him every once in a while, “Well Penguin-ya? Did you have something you wanted to address or am I just supposed to stand here and watch you pace? You know, we’re missing a very important conversation right now.”

Penguin shot him an angry look, and Law smirked back at him. That was interesting, not a reaction Law anticipated. Penguin was pretty level-headed most of the time, so getting a rise out of him like this was uncommon.

“Are we seriously expected to not be seen around other pirate crews while we’re here? Kid even said there was no way for them to see what was happening in Wano, so why the sudden urge for secrecy?”

“While Eustass is correct in the assumption that the World Government has no say in the Land of Wano, he was wrong to think that they don’t have eyes on the island. The World Government was constantly getting reports about what was happening during the raid and it is naive to think that they pulled their people once Kaido and Big Mom fell.”

Penguin stopped pacing at that. He figured the World Government was monitoring the state of Wano and the raid but he really was hoping that it wouldn’t be a concern now that the fight was done.

“Law,” The desperation in Penguin’s voice set Law on alert.

“Law, what am I supposed to do?” This was not a situation he had planned for. He expected Penguin to argue with him or try and persuade him to let him go against him and Kid. But to have Penguin plead with him? He might be a heartless pirate to everyone else, but this was his first mate. The tone in Penguin’s voice made Law give him a sympathetic look.

“If at some point during our preparations you…Disappear, I might tell the crew not to bother you. But that does not guarantee that they won’t still go looking for you. It also does not guarantee that the…other party will also provide the same aid.”

Penguin lit up at Law’s so-called “aid” and quickly nodded along.

“Penguin. This does not get you out of your responsibilities as the first mate of the Heart Pirates. I still expect you to fulfill your role,” Law hesitated before he continued, “I also expect you to be reasonable when it comes to departing. I expect there to be no issues or arguments when I decide we leave.”

The finality in Law’s tone made Penguin sober up. He knew that even if he wanted to, there would be no way for him to push back their departure to get more time with Killer.

“I understand Captain. There’s nothing to worry about.”

“Bull fucking shit there’s nothing to worry about!!”

Law rolled his eyes and Penguin jumped, surprised at a newcomer, “Eavesdropping on other crew’s conversations is dangerous, Eustass-ya. I would be careful if I were you.”

“Fuck off Trafalgar! I’m not here for you anyway, I’m here to talk to that first mate of yours,” Kid pointed at Penguin as he spoke.

Law cut his eyes to Kid and warned him, “You so much as lay a finger on Penguin and I’m cutting off your other arm.”

“Faffaffaffa! That makes two of us Kid,” Killer chimed in from behind his captain, “Leave him alone and use your fucking words. If not, you’ll have more than Trafalgar to worry about.”

“Since when did you get so fucking buddy-buddy with a Heart Pirate Killer?!” Kid whipped around to glare at his first mate.

“I would probably say it started when he stuck his tongue down my first mate's throat. Isn’t that right Killer-ya?” Law gave both Kid Pirates a challenging look. Penguin was silent throughout the whole encounter, mortified by what Law was implying (no matter how right he was).

Killer clenched his fists. He wasn’t surprised that Law knew what had happened and to be honest, Kid probably also knew, but to have it put that way? He saw the look of embarrassment and anger that crossed Penguin’s face and was wondering what was going through his head.

“I want to date Killer!”

That is not what he would have guessed.

Everyone quickly looked at Penguin, all with different expressions. Kid looked furious but slightly intrigued, Law just looked pissed, and of course, Killer’s face was covered but Penguin could see him tense up at the exclamation.

They stood in tense silence for a moment before Kid broke it with a booming laugh.

“I get why you like this guy now Kil, he’s got a pair of balls on him!”

“Kid,” Killer groaned in annoyance, “Would you just calm down already?”

“Surprisingly, I will have to agree with Killer-ya. Please calm down so we can discuss this like the adults…most of us are,” Law was now assessing Killer as if he were seeing him for the first time.

Ignoring Law, Killer approached Penguin. He bent down a little so he could whisper in the shorter man’s ear, “Is that true Little Bird? You want to date me?”

Penguin swallowed hard, finding it difficult to respond with Killer so close, he nodded in confirmation.

Killer let out a deep chuckle, sending a shiver down Penguin’s spine, “That’s cute. I didn’t realize pirates dated .”

Penguin glared at Killer, “What? Do you not want to? In that case, let me go find someone that does.”

Killer reached up and gripped Penguin by his arms, “Don’t you dare. I just got you, I’m not losing you to anyone else. Not if I can help it.”

Penguin relaxed and gave him a sweet smile, had he known Killer was such a jealous man he would have pulled that card a lot sooner. He set his hand on Killer’s waist in reassurance.

“The feelings are mutual. You better not run now that Kid and Law set that stupid rule,” He ran his hand up and down Killer’s side to try and calm him down. At that, Killer loosened his hold on Penguin and started to run his hands up and down the smaller man’s arms.

“Ughh stop it! I’m going to be sick if I watch any more of this lovey-dovey shit!” Of course, Kid was the one to interrupt.

“Then don’t fucking watch. Please be my guest and fuck off,” Killer kept eye contact with Penguin. His cursing at his captain made Penguin giggle and wrap both arms around his waist pulling him into an embrace.

Over Killer’s shoulder, Penguin called out to Kid, “If you’re going to be sick, please do it somewhere else. I don’t plan on moving anytime soon and would rather not have this ruined by you of all people.”

Kid’s face grew red in anger as Killer laughed at the insult. Law even smirked at his first mate and grabbed Kid’s arm to drag him away, “Come on, leave them alone. We just defeated a Yonko, they deserve some time to celebrate,” He directed his next command at the two first mates, “Don’t be too long, you both still have responsibilities.”

Penguin shot Law a thumbs up and Killer nodded his head in confirmation. They both quickly returned to their own world and missed the look their captains shared before leaving in the opposite direction of the meeting.

Ignoring everything but the man in front of them, Penguin and Killer relaxed into their shared embrace. They stood in silence, not wanting to interrupt the comfortable atmosphere now that they were alone.

Penguin’s thoughts were sadly not quiet and he broke the silence to voice his concerns, “What are we going to do after this?”

Killer, like the smart ass he was, replied, “Well I’m hoping for a kiss or two but we can just keep standing here if that’s what you would prefer.”

Penguin slapped his arm with a smile, after returning to their hug his smile fell, “I’m serious Kil. We can’t ignore the fact that our crews will be going in opposite directions in a few days. I’m not asking anyone to try and change that, I’m just as much a pirate as anyone else, but I want to know if you have any expectations of how we proceed after that.”

“...You sounded like Trafalgar when you said that.”

“And you sound like you’re an idiot of a captain who can’t have a serious conversation to save his life! Damn it, Killer!” Penguin moved to pull away, he was through with this conversation if it wasn’t going anywhere. Killer felt him moving away and quickly tightened his hold on him.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I just haven’t really thought about it. Hell, before a few hours ago I wasn’t even sure you made it through the raid,” He ran his hand along Penguin’s back, trying to calm them both down, “I’m not sure Penguin. I would like to say that everything will turn out okay and that we’ll be able to meet each other during restock stops but who knows what the next part of our journey holds.”

“I know. There’s no guarantee that our paths will ever cross again…Do you- do you think Kid and Law would help? From what I can tell, neither are really upset about us and I kind of think they might even have something going on.”

Killer’s head shot up at that, “What? You haven’t noticed all the shared glances and the fact that our crews just so happen to be working strangely close during all this? Let’s not forget Hajime Island! There had to have been more going on than that poor excuse for a temporary truce .”

“Now that you mention it, Kid did react weirdly to a call he got not long before you arrived at Hajime Island… You think that could have been Law?”

Penguin nodded vehemently, “100%. Law has a way of doing things without considering how others would feel so he would definitely do something like surprise Kid.”

“Hmm. Makes sense, Kid did say you were early.”

They both stood there for a moment, contemplating what this meant about their captains. Penguin shook himself out of it first, “That doesn’t matter right now. As long as we can find a way to make it seem like it would be beneficial to keep up an alliance or truce or whatever they want to call it, we shouldn’t have any issues. And you know that Strawhat is still going to consider them allies after this, even if they all deny it.”

Killer nodded in contemplation before looking at their surroundings. Penguin realized what he’s looking for and while he was excited he still stopped him, “Killer, it’s too risky right now. We’re too close to the meeting and anyone could come looking for us.”

He was interrupted when Killer suddenly pulled him to sit down on some nearby rubble. Killer pulled his so close that he was practically sitting in his lap.

“Ehh, let them,” With that, he removed his helmet again and planted a kiss on the top of Penguin’s head before dropping his face to the inside of his neck. Penguin was a little shocked. He thought that Killer would do a little more than that but was still content in relaxing with the imposing man hugging him. He huffed, he loved having Killer relax in his arms, but after being in that helmet so long his hair was all over the place.

Penguin started giggling at how silly and nonthreatening Killer looked with his helmet hair. This made Killer look up at him confused.

“What’s so funny?” They were just having a serious conversation, so what one earth could Penguin be thinking about?

“It’s nothing. It’s just that you look cute with your hair all crazy and poofy,” Penguin giggled at the disgruntled look Killer was giving him. He burst out laughing when Killer turned away like a petulant child, refusing to look at Penguin any longer, resulting in a face full of blonde hair.

They stayed like that, wrapped up in each other and enjoying the little bubble they created for themselves. Killer was about to fall asleep when he suddenly felt Penguin stiffen.

He looked up to ask what was wrong when all the sudden his helmet was shoved back on his head. He sat there, trying to process what was happening when he head a voice speak up from behind him.

“Yo Peng! I’ve been looking for you! What have you been-” Killer heard the newcomer suddenly stop their approach, “Ohhhh, I see what’s been keeping you so preoccupied. I would say to keep enjoying yourself but Law says there are some preparations that he needs you for.”

“Damn it. Shachi leave us alone!” Killer looked up at Penguin’s face and smiled at the embarrassed blush that was growing. Realizing that Penguin had taken his own hat off at some point, Killer looked around for it. Once he found the cute hat, he quickly grabbed it and squished it on Penguin’s head. The Heart Pirate was surprised by the sudden movement. What was with Killer and making sure he had his hat on?

Killer could see his confusion and explained under his breath, “I know he’s part of your crew, but I’m selfish and possessive.”

Penguin could understand the sentiment. The minute he realized someone was approaching, he threw Killer’s helmet back on. It didn’t matter what crew they were from or who it was, had it been Kid he still would have covered Killer’s face. Now that he had the priviledge of seeing Killer without his mask he was practically territorial over the other man.

“Does he need me right this minute?” Penguin sighed, really hoping Law could wait.

Shachi gave him a sympathetic look, “Yeah, he said it’s not something that can wait. He also told me that if you tried getting out of it to remind you of the agreement you made? What ever that’s about, but he said you would know what I mean.”

Penguin stiffened at that. He knew he made an agreement with Law that his relationship with Killer wouldn’t interfere with his first mate duties, he just didn’t realize Law would be this big of a stickler about it. Thinking about it though, Penguin isn’t sure why he’s so surprised, Law would never let him interfere with his plans no matter the reason.

Penguin sighed before tapping Killer’s arm to let him go. Killer tightened his embrace once more before releasing Penguin. He was sick of Trafalgar interrupting their alone time, but knew that if it was Kid requesting his presence he couldn’t argue either.

Penguin looked down at Killer still sitting on the rubble from some poor building a Strawhat probably destroyed. Even with the helmet on, Penguin could tell that Killer had a slight pout, he found the thought endearing and placed a peck on the top of his helmet before turning to follow Shachi.

When he caught up with Shachi, who had apparently decided to leave after the sickening display of affection (his words), Penguin turned back to Killer and called out.

“I’m going to mention to Law what we talked about! Talk to Kid and see what he says! I’ll try and meet up with you tomorrow!” Penguin waved goodbye to Killer and gave him an exaggerated air kiss that left the Kid Pirate laughing. He gave Penguin a thumbs up in return and stood to go do just that.

He was hoping that whatever Kid and Trafalgar discussed didn’t leave Kid in a bad mood or else their conversion might end short.

Chapter Text

Penguin was annoyed.

Did Law really take him away from Killer just to discuss possible plans?! It’s like he was trying to be annoying. Law never told them about about a plan unless it was fully drawn out and ready to be executed. With that in mind, Penguin really wasn’t sure why he had to be briefed on possible plans.

He sat with Shachi and Bepo in the Polar Tang,  listening to Law explain what they need before they leave and what they might run into once they leave. The minute Law stopped talking and asked for questions, Penguin stood, glared at him, and left.

He missed the unimpressed look Law gave him. He made it all the way to the first mate quarters before he saw a blue hue over take him. He sighed as he turned and watched Law appear where he had left a blanket folded on a chair.

“Hey! That was my favorite! At least swap spots with something I don’t have to worry about getting stolen!” Penguin said outraged. He really did like that blanket, the blue color of it reminded him of a certain pirate’s eyes.

“Room,” Law swapped his blanket back with a pen Penguin had sitting on the desk in his quarters, “Is that better?”

Penguin glared at him again and nodded.

“Good. Now, do you want to explain what has you so bothered?”

“Yeah right, like you don’t already know!” Penguin rolled his eyes, shocked that Law was acting so innocent. Penguin knew he was too smart to try and pretend like he didn’t know why Penguin was in a bad mood.

With the unimpressed look Law was still giving him, Penguin threw up his hands in exasperation, “Damn it Law! Couldn’t you have waited just a little longer to call that damn meeting? We both know that could have waiting another few days. So what the hell is up?”

Law was still giving him that stupid infuriating look, “I was…testing you. Just because you say you won’t be too distracted doesn’t mean you won’t push your limits. I saw you two. I know how deeply you feel for each other and how dangerous those feelings can be to both crews if it gets out of hand.”

“Testing?! Dangerous?! What the hell Law! I thought we went over this?! You of all people should know how dedicated I am to the Heart Pirates. My feelings for Killer can’t change any of that. Do you really think I would let a relationship come between me and the crew?” At this point, Penguin’s anger had run out and he was left with pain. Did Law think that lowly of him? Had their years together as captain and first mate not shown him how much he cared about their crew?

Law’s face softened, “No, Penguin. I would never question your dedication and love for this crew. I know that you would do anything for any one of us. The only thing I’m concerned about is what you will go through once we have to part ways with the Kid Pirates.”

Penguin paused at that. He knew that was unavoidable, but he had been trying not to think about the day where they would all eventually move on from Wano. Even though it was quickly approaching, ignoring the inevitable was his go to in difficult situations.

“I- I actually wanted to talk to you about that,” Law raised his brow at this and Penguin was quick to reassure him, “It’s nothing that would endanger the crew and we would still leave and continue on as planned! Umm but what Killer and I had talked about was just maybe, possibly- you know, only if you and Kid agree-”

“Spit it out Penguin-ya.”

“Okay! We were wondering if you and Kid would consider extending the truce and agree to try to meet at the same islands for restocks! Like you did at Hajime Island! We wouldn’t necessarily have to be allies, but we have already proved that we can be on the same island for a few days without killing each other!” At  Law’s interruption, Penguin became flustered and couldn’t control his ranting.

Law looked on as his first mate panicked. He had secretly already considered that course of action and had even mentioned it to Kid. While Kid was not very receptive to the plan, the other captain never actually told him no. He knew that it was a risky plan, he had already considered all the pros and cons of such a truce. One thing he could not ignore though, was the state of his crew. While it wasn’t something that he could predict, if never seeing Killer again truly affected Penguin, he would regret not making an effort.

He might be the Surgeon of Death, but he loved his crew.

“Penguin. Take a breath,” Law commanded. At the sharp tone of Law’s voice, Penguin paused and did as he was told. He took a few deep breaths, slowly releasing them. The breathing exercise calmed him and helped slow his raging thoughts and growing worries.

“I have considered such an arrangement. There are many things that could go wrong with that type of relationship between crews. On the other hand, there are notable benefits as well. I have mentioned my thoughts on the matter and my own plan that I have drawn up to Eustass-ya. However, as you are well aware, he is a difficult man and there is no guarantee he will agree to my terms,” Law could see the tension leaving Penguin as he spoke. He knew that any possibility of it all working would give Penguin hope. Law prays he is not giving his first mate unrealistic expectations.

*****

Sometimes Killer hated his best friend.

Kid was like a bloodhound. The moment Killer stepped foot on the Victoria Punk, Kid found him and gave him an expectant look.

“Faffaffaffa! What do you want Kid?” Killer looked at him unimpressed. Kid always wanted something when he looked at him like that.

“Oh nothing, I was just wondering what you got up to after I left. Have anything to share with your captain?” Kid gave him a suggestive look that made Killer want to punch him.

“Actually, yes. I do have some thing I need to talk to you about. Privately,” Kid was shocked by that. Was Killer really going to give him all the dirty details about his time with the little Heart Pirate?

“Yes! Captain’s quarters! Now!” Kid was like…well like a kid in a candy store. Killer never told him about any of his relationship or conquests, so the little Heart Pirate must be something special if he was willingly sharing information (one time Kid had tied Killer to the mast of the Victoria Punk to interrogate him about how he had spent his night).

Killer knew exactly where Kid’s thoughts were but knew that if he told what he actually wanted to talk about, his friend would bolt, most likely to try to  beat up Trafalgar or Penguin.

When they made it to Kid’s room, he ran to sit criss cross on the bed and patted the spot in front of him. Killer really wasn’t sure what was happening. Did someone brainwash his friend? Kid has never acted this childlike, even when he was a child. Was he really that excited? Killer almost felt guilty about tricking him. Almost.

Killer sat down, not criss crossed to Kid’s disappointment, and contemplated taking off him helmet. It had been nice having it off around Penguin. It’s rare that he lets himself relax so much that he’s comfortable with doing that. He also thinks that taking it off for this conversation might show Kid how serious he is.

With that in mind, he reached up and pressed the hidden button behind his ear and pulled off his helmet. Of course Kid had seen his face countless times, but he always gave Killer a stunned look when he took off his helmet. This time was no different, but not long after he gave Killer his usual look, he straightened his spine and schooled his face. His surprise was replaced but his usual look, lacking the anger.

“I might be willing to tell you about Penguin if you seriously listen to everything I have to say first. Deal?”

It was obvious that those conditions bothered Kid, “For fucks sake Killer, if you have something to say just say it! But don’t think you’re getting out of telling me about that little bird.”

Killer was quick to reprimand him, “Don’t call him that.”

The anger in his tone made Kid raise his eyebrows at him, surprised that Killer would speak to him that way about some pirate from the Trafalgar’s crew, “Fine, I’ll stop calling the little first mate that if you get on with whatever you have to say.”

Killer knew that Kid would listen to what he was about to propose, the issue was whether or not he would seriously consider it.

“So, I talked to Penguin ,” He gave Kid a pointed look at the use of the Heart Pirate’s name and Kid rolled his eyes, “We think that the Kid and Heart Pirates should consider making a truce. We would be far from allies, nether would be obligated or expected to aid the other in anyway. Instead we would just agree to stay friendly if we happen to run into each other.”

So far, Killer couldn’t read Kid’s face. He was hoping that the lack of emotion was a good sign and not one that meant destruction later.

Killer continued, this was the part he was worried about, “Our truce would also include restocks. With this, we would agree to periodically meet for restocks where each crew could share information they deem acceptable. Similar to when we met on Hajime Island. These meetings wouldn't required the sharing of information if you and Trafalgar don’t want to, but it would allow both crews to mingle and share their own experience.”

Killer knew all about Kid’s reservations without needing to be told, “I know the last time we tried something like this it ended badly. It ended more than badly. But consider the facts: while it wasn’t long we were both on Hajime Island together without anyone dying, we’ve somewhat worked together during the Onigashima Raid, and if we’re being completely honest, it would give you and Trafalgar an excuse to be on the same island.”

Killer was taking a gamble with that last point. He and Penguin had discussed the possibility of something going on between their captains but really had no proof. Testing their theory like this was dangerous. Even if they were right, Kid could still lose his shit and take it out on Killer.

Killer watched as Kid narrowed his eyes at him, “What do you mean by that Killer?”

Killer saw some scraps of metal Kid kept in his room start floating towards his friend, “I mean what ever you want me to. It’s up to you to decide whether that point is something to take into consideration. You know I don’t give a fuck what you do. You also know that I’ll follow what ever decision you make.”

Kid watched him a little longer, assessing his first mate. Apparently he came to some sort of conclusion. His body relaxed and the metal that had been slowly moving towards him all fell to the floor.

“Yeah, I know you will. That’s what pisses me off. The one time I expect you to be selfish, you twist it so that it somehow can be beneficial to the crew. You do know we’re pirates right? You’re allowed to be selfish, it’s in the job description.”

“It’s also in the job description as first mate to put you and crew before my wants.”

Kid rolled his eyes at that, “Yeah right. I know you say that but we both know you and you’re little boyfriend cooked up this shit plan just so you can see each other more.”

Killer didn’t dignify that with a response. Why would he when argument he had was a lie?

Kid sighed at the lack of response and ran his hand through his hair, “Fine. I’ll try and talk to Trafalgar about it tomorrow. I don’t have the energy to try and deal with that son of a bitch tonight. Now get the fuck out of my room.”

Killer smiled at his friend and nodded. He grabbed his helmet and made his way to the door. As he was reaching for the handle Kid spoke up again.

“You know I haven’t seen you genuinely smile in over a year? If it’s all because of that little Heart Pirate I guess he’s alright in my book. That doesn’t mean I won’t kick his ass if he annoys me.”

Killer gave Kid one last smile before putting his helmet back on and heading to the galley to check on the crew.

His conversation with Kid went surprisingly well, no promises were made but there was a chance. Hopefully the next day won’t end in disaster.

Chapter Text

Penguin was uncomfortable.

He had called Killer on his den-den the night before and made plans to meet in the Flower Capital to discuss a continuation of their “truce”.

This was not really what he was expecting though.

They had arrived at the same time as the two Kid Pirates and while he was excited to see Killer, the same could not be said for Kid. The Kid Pirate’s captain had been staring him down ever since they met up. When they finally took their seats in the agreed-upon bar, Kid insisted he sit across from Penguin. Even Law agreed, not taking his eyes off Killer.

It felt more like a meet-the-parents than a pirate negotiation.

They had gotten drinks when they walked in and Penguin had been messing with his glass while they sat in silence. He spared a glance at Killer who seemed a bit tense. Right when Penguin was gathering the courage to speak up, Kid beat him to it.

“So, little first mate, what did you and Killer get up to yesterday?” Kid looked at him expectantly. Penguin looked to Law and Killer for help but Law was giving him a curious stare and Killer was staring at Kid.

“Uhh, you know, nothing much,” Penguin rubbed the back of his neck and dodged Kid’s stare.

“Actually, I don’t know. The first time Kil takes off that damn helmet in months and he doesn’t even give me any of the dirty details! Just some stupid plan you idiots thought up,” Kid threw his hands up in the air and shot Killer an annoyed glare.

Penguin didn’t know what to say to that. Had it been that long since Killer had taken off his helmet? Even around his own crew? Penguin realized that if what Kid said was true, that Killer took his helmet off for the first time in months for Penguin . The realization that the Massacre Soldier trusted Penguin enough to be that open with him, hit Penguin hard. His thoughts were running wild. He didn’t even think to try and reply to Kid, too caught up in swooning even more over Killer. He could feel his face heating up. Was it hot in there or was it just him?

Penguin was overwhelmed. He felt like he couldn’t go a second longer without either seeing Killer’s expression or touching him in some way.

Penguin looked to Killer, knowing he wouldn’t be able to see his face, and caught the other seemingly looking right back at him. Knowing that Killer probably knew exactly what Penguin was thinking sent him over the edge.

“Umm I- if you’ll excuse me a minute. I- I need to use the bathroom,” Penguin didn’t wait for any replies or acknowledgments before bolting from his seat.

Penguin put his head down and quickly walked towards the restrooms in the back of the bar. Luckily, their choice of venue was surprisingly higher end, so the restrooms were in the back corner with a hallway leading towards them. Penguin walked to the end of the hall and locked himself in the furthest bathroom. He took a deep breath to calm his racing heart and leaned over the sink.

“Come on! Fucking calm down and get it together! Stop acting like some fucking Renaissance man who saw a woman’s fucking ankles for the first time! Just because he likes you doesn’t mean you need to freak out,” He took another deep breath and looked at himself in the mirror. His shoulders slumped in defeat at the blush he saw high on his cheeks and spreading down his neck.

There was a sudden knock on the door that made him jump, “Sorry! Be right out!” Penguin cursed at how his voice cracked. He turned on the water and splashed his face, hoping he could cool himself off some before heading back to what was bound to be an embarrassing conversation.

Penguin was surprised when the door swung open as he unlocked it. Could people not be patient?

His surprise was quickly forgotten when he was pushed back into the room and the door locked behind the intruder. Penguin reared back when he caught sight of a familiar blue and white mask.

“Fucking hell Killer! Could you at least announce yourself? Or you know, not barge in on me in the restroom?”

“Sorry,” Penguin glared at the simple response. Killer had taken off his mask and did not look sorry. He had a large grin on his face that made Penguin warry.

“You look like the cat that caught the canary. Why?”

“No reason. Just appreciating how cute you are.”

“Mother fucke-” Penguin was cut off by a pair of hands on his hips and a pair of lips on his. He was upset at being interrupted but quickly forgave Killer as the larger man walked him back towards the sink.

Penguin wound his arms around Killer’s shoulders, using the other’s height to pull himself up a bit for a better angle. Killer took this as a cue.

Penguin gasped when he was suddenly lifted and placed on the counter. Killer ignored Penguin’s affronted noise at being manhandled and went back to his exploration of the smaller man’s mouth. Penguin moaned in surprise, still not sure what exactly got into Killer but he wasn’t about to stop and ask.

Penguin gasped and took a deep breath when Killer finally pulled back. Apparently, it wasn’t to explain himself, as he immediately took off Penguin’s hat and started licking and kissing his way along the now fully exposed neck in front of him.

Kil ,” Penguin meant for that to be a question but it turned into a moan when Killer started kissing further down his neck. Penguin could feel the zipper on his boilersuit being pulled down, but at that point, he was too out of it to care.

Not that he had any complaints about what was happening. He still had no clue what urged Killer to act like this but that was a question for later. Right now, all Penguin wanted to think about was the man standing between his thighs and the hands slowly roaming over his torso.

He felt a little bad that Killer was seemingly putting in all the work and a little jealous that he was the one being felt up and not the other way around.

“Alright, my turn,” Penguin pulled Killer’s head up from where he had started biting along his collarbones and set work returning the favor.

Penguin would be the first to admit that he was no prude and had his fair share of random hookups during supply stops but nothing could compare to how excited he was to get his hands on Killer. He knew they were far past their first kiss, but it was the first time Penguin wasn’t looking over his shoulder scared that someone would see his Killer without the mask.

His Killer?

Penguin froze.

Why did he call him his Killer ?! They hadn’t discussed anything close to the realm of exclusivity let alone any type of relationship. For god's sake, they were pirates ! On opposing crews for that matter! They both knew that come morning they would head off in different directions with no idea when they might see each other again. It’s foolish to think that Penguin had any kind of claim over Killer.

Because of his spiraling, Penguin missed the fact that Killer had noticed his change and pulled back. Penguin shook himself out of his thoughts and saw Killer giving him a concerned look.

They were both still breathing hard when Killer made a move to step away from Penguin. The smaller man panicked and pulled Killer back to him by his hips.

“Where are you going?!” He asked panicked. He was still in shock by his thoughts but was slowly getting worried about what he did that would have made Killer pull back like that.

“What do you mean? I thought you got uncomfortable and wanted to stop. It’s fine if you do, I just don’t know what I did wrong. But it doesn’t really matter, we can go back to the table. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kid and Law were at each other's throats at this point.”

Killer tried to move away again as he spoke but Penguin just tightened his grip.

“Nothing is wrong and I didn’t change my mind! I just thought of something that kind of surprised me but you did nothing wrong,” Penguin was adamant and hoped Killer understood he was telling the truth.

He looked at Penguin like he wasn’t sure whether or not to believe him, “What did you think about that made you freeze up?”

Penguin averted his gaze and looked down at where he still held onto the taller man, “It was nothing, just a silly thought. Don’t worry about it.”

Killer grabbed his chin and tilted his head up so he had no choice but to look at him, “Look at me. It’s obviously not nothing and that means it matters to me. You know, we can just go back to the table and have a nice dinner before we depart tomorrow.”

Penguin snorted, “Like a dinner with Kid and Law could ever be civil let alone nice.”

Killer gave him an unimpressed look. Penguin didn’t say anything for a moment, trying to decide how he would verbalize his spiraling thoughts.

“I- I was just thinking…about us. About,” Penguin hesitated again, “About what happens after tomorrow and…what we are.”

Killer gave Penguin a small smile at his short explanation, “That’s all? Little Bird, I might not be great at this but even I know that no matter what happens after tomorrow we’re going to be okay. Nothing will change what’s happened between us the last few days.”

Penguin had long ago accepted his strong feelings for Killer, and after hearing the resolution in his partner’s voice he fell even harder. Penguin relaxed into his arms and hid his face in Killer’s shoulder.

“For someone who’s normally so quiet, how are you so good at words?” he whispered as Killer kissed his temple and returned the hug.

Penguin gave a small giggle, “I kinda ruined the mood huh?”

He already knew the answer and was a little upset with himself for even bringing it up, but he wouldn’t have changed anything that happened in the last couple of minutes. He hadn’t realized he was so worried but is glad he got it off his chest.

Killer furrowed his brows, “You think you killed the mood? All you did was confirm that you reciprocated my feelings and that you would want to continue this after tomorrow.”

Penguin looked up at him a little shocked, “Seriously? But-”

“But nothing. Penguin, there is nothing wrong with being concerned about your feelings and what might happen tomorrow,” Killer gave Penguin a soft look and ran his hand through Penguin’s short, dark auburn locks.

The sincerity in Killer’s voice only made him more emotional than he already was. He couldn’t help himself and wrapped an arm around his neck and pulled him down into another kiss. He could tell Killer was a little surprised but immediately returned the affection.

Penguin melted into Killer’s embrace as the taller man pulled him even closer by his hips. Penguin buried a hand in Killer’s hair and continued his exploration from earlier with the other. He could feel the groan Killer let out as he explored the plains of his chest and abs.

He felt Killer’s large hands slip under his shirt and move up his sides. Penguin leaned into Killer’s touch and used his grip on the other man to press him as close as possible.

“We should- probably- mm-make sure- our ca-captains aren’t killing- killing each other,” Penguin tried getting out while Killer started paying very close attention to his neck and the dip of his collar bones again.

“Mhm sure,” Killer agreed, not stopping his minstrations. Penguin giggled at Killer’s distracted answer and the hands dancing across his ribs.

“Kil, I’m serious,” Penguin tilted his head back as Killer hummed again.

“We’ve in been in here a while now, come on Kil,” He tried pushing Killer away but ended up giggling when Killer groaned into his neck.

“I don’t want to deal with our captains. I swear they need to resolve their tension. They either need to kill each other or fuck, I’m tired of watching them.”

That made Penguin pull back, “Wait. Fuck? You think there’s sexual tension between Law and Kid?”

“Seriously? You haven’t noticed? I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve already fucked and are just angry that it didn’t scratch the itch,” Killer looked upset about Penguin pulling back but shrugged as if he didn’t just drop a huge bomb about their captains.

“I’m not sure if we’re on the same page but I don’t want to think about my captain like that, especially in this position,” He motioned to Killer standing between his legs and his hands still under his shirt.

Killer groaned again and dropped his head on Penguin's shoulder, “I really don’t want to go back out there and deal with them.”

As if summoned, there was a loud pounding on the locked bathroom door, “Yo Kil! Please tell me you aren’t fucking in there! If you wanted some alone time all you had to do is say so!”

“Could he be any louder? Fucking jackass,” Killer glared at the door while Kid kept pounding on the door.

Penguin laughed at the look on his partner’s face and pushed him back. He hopped down from the counter and started towards the door when Killer grabbed his wrist and pulled him back into his hold.

“Can’t forget this, Little Bird,” Killer smiled as he put on and straightened Penguin’s hat back on his head. Penguin felt the tips of his ears burning with a blush at Killer’s sweet gesture and gave him one last peck.

“Same goes for you, Kil. I would return the gesture but I still haven’t figured out how your helmet works,” Killer laughed at his honesty and locked his helmet back in place. Killer unlocked and opened the door as Kid was about to knock again.

“Finally! Trafalgar and I thought you ditched us. I was going insane trying not to kill the douchebag. I can’t believe you left me alone with that jackass for so long,” Kid glared at them, Killer didn’t deign him with a response.

Penguin caught sight of Law over Kid’s shoulder, he could tell his captain was less than impressed with how he found his right hand.

“Penguin-ya, let's go. We still have to finish preparing for our departure tomorrow,” Killer didn’t miss the side eye that Kid gave Law at that.

“Oh, ya. You’re right. Sorry Captain,” Penguin said sheepishly. He looked at Killer, not sure how to say bye after the moment they just had. Killer seemed to understand his dilemma and tilted his head a bit.

“I’ll see you soon, Little Bird,” Penguin could hear the smile in his voice. He was glad Killer hadn’t said goodbye, it probably would’ve gutted him if Killer had said a more final goodbye.

Penguin smiled up at him, “I look forward to the day, Kil.”

Kid rolled his eyes at two, “Damn, it’s not like you’re going off to war. We’re bound to run into each other again.”

Law smirked at that, “Oh? You want to run into each other again?”

Kid looked like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar, “No! That’s not what I meant! Fucking Trafalgar! Putting words into my mouth! That’s not what I said!”

“Bet he wishes Trafalgar put something else in his mouth. Told you they were fucking,” Penguin jumped hearing Killer whisper into his ear. He snorted out a laugh after processing what he said. Both captains looked over at the sound and made Penguin freeze up.

“Uhhh, let's go Law! Got a lotta things to do and people to see!” He pushed past Killer and started to push Law down the hall.

“See you later Killer! Don’t die on me!” Penguin shot Killer a wink and continued to push Law out of the bar.

“Sooo you wanna talk about it, Peng?” Penguin gave Shachi an unimpressed look.

“There really isn’t anything to say that I haven’t already. We had a few moments together and talked about it and said that if we ran into each other again then that would be great.”

“...that would be great? How on earth did you manage to land a guy when you have absolutely no charisma? I’m genuinely asking because I’m stumped,” Shachi giggled as Penguin punched him in the arm.

“No need to be a douche bag Shachi!” Penguin laughed.

“Hahaha, I’m just messing with you! I’m glad you found someone and you’re happy. I’m sorry you’re not sure when you’ll see each other next.”

“Oh get that pitying look off your face Shachi! It's not that big of a deal! We both knew what we were getting into, and we’re both fully aware of our situation.”

Shachi watched his friend as he continued mapping out their course to the next island, he just hoped the next time they ran into the Kid Pirates it was under better circumstances.
