The Other Side of an Anomaly

Chapter 24: Chapter 23 "Alex & Kelly vs Cyrus"

Chapter Text

NEVADA DESERT

(OUTSIDE OF AREA 51)

The two teenage agents looked over at the newly transformed man in front of them. Both of their eyes locked into his. No personal feelings were going to be made here. They both knew that if they didn’t stop Cyrus now, then Jecka and the rest of the friends that they have made today would die.

Kelly had managed to get a good handle on her Anomability. According to Leon, it was a lot quicker than most had but considering who her parents were, it was no surprise to him that she was essentially a prodigy in the making.

Kelly breathed once, slow and deliberate. The sky answered. Clouds thickened into bruised spirals overhead, thunder rolling like something enormous turning in its sleep. Heat shimmered around her feet, the promise of wildfire coiled beneath her skin.

But that didn’t matter much to Cyrus in his new form as all he had to do was lift one finger.

And the desert tilted.

Gravity skewed sideways as the sand beneath Alex’s feet hardened, then folded upward like a breaking wave. Alex leapt instinctively, barely clearing the rising wall as it snapped shut behind him, reforming into a blade-thin ridge of stone.

Kelly didn’t hesitate.

She threw her arms wide, and the sky broke open.

Lightning speared downward—not random, but deliberate—forking bolts slamming into the glassed ground around Cyrus. Thunder detonated immediately, pressure waves slamming into the desert floor hard enough to kick up shock rings of sand.

Cyrus didn’t move.

The lightning stopped inches from his body, its energy unraveling into harmless photons as he rewrote the air around himself into a vacuum bubble.

Alex’s eyes widened. Cyrus wasn’t nearly this strong when he and Ken fought him earlier. Did that new form of his give him such a boost in power?

Alex concentrated to see if he could copy that new power but was shocked to see nothing happened.

Whatever Cyrus had just turned into…

Alex couldn’t copy it.

Instead all Alex could do was raise his hand, mimicking Cyrus’s original powers, and with the twist of his wrist, the vacuum bubble collapsed violently, air rushing back in with a concussive blast that knocked Cyrus backward a step.

Kelly then saw an opening.

She slammed her foot down, and the desert became an earthquake.

The ground rippled outward in concentric waves, fissures tearing open as deep vibrations rolled beneath the surface. Fault lines that hadn’t moved in centuries screamed awake, releasing stored tectonic fury.

Alex, using the earthquake to his advantage, managed to launch himself toward the stumbling Cyrus as he readied a punch to collide into Cyrus’ face.

But the punch never connected.

In fact it couldn’t connect.

Cyrus’ body, much to Alex’s surprise, had turned itself into sand.

“This is the power of the Capricorn Zodiac.” Cyrus explained as he morphed back into his original shape. “Not only can it increase the power of my Anomability, but it also allows me to awaken its true ability. Now instead of just being able to manipulate the matter around me, my body can now turn into that same matter.”

Alex picked himself up from the ground after that failed attempt of a punch. He looked over to Cyrus in confusion. “Zodiac?” He echoed.

Cyrus nodded. “According to ODD’s records, the first twelve Zodiacs were the original users of Anomabilities that existed millions of years ago after the Big Bang. Once every thousand years, those same twelve are reborn into new vessels. It is considered a divine honor to be one of the twelve. That is how I know for a fact that you can’t beat me.”

“I DON’T FUCKING CARE ABOUT ANY OF THAT!” Kelly screamed. “THIS ISN’T YOU CYRUS! PLEASE STOP THIS!” Kelly pounded a fist onto the ground as she fell to her knees, tears escaping from her eyes, despite the earthquake she created still being active.

“...I’m sorry Kelly. But I can’t stop now. Not when I’m so close to helping him create a better world.” Cyrus clenched a fist and the earthquake froze mid-motion.

Cracks stopped spreading. Sand hung suspended in the air like a paused explosion. With a sharp upward pull, Cyrus rewrote density itself, compressing the frozen desert into a jagged forest of stone spikes erupting toward the sky.

Alex reacted on instinct.

He reached for Kelly’s power.

Feeling a surge of Kelly’s Anomability into his body, Alex clapped both his hands together to summon a tornado that tore through the stone spikes as if they were made of paper. During all of this Alex came up with an idea.

Cyrus was way more powerful than both him and Kelly combined so they would only have one shot to take him down. And the key to that would have to be for him to let his guard down just once.

While the tornados blocked Cyrus’ vision of the battlefield, Alex took this chance to tell Kelly of his plan. She nodded and began to dissipate the tornados that Alex created and replace them with a rainstorm.

With the tornados gone, Cyrus now had a clear view ahead of him despite the heavy rain. What he saw ahead of him was Alex Yu running towards him with great speed, once again using his matter Anomability to clad his arm from the sand and changing its density into an iron-like gauntlet.

Cyrus gave a cocky smirk. “I already told you, I can transform into the matter I manipulate now. You can’t hit-” But he was cut off as Alex’s iron enforced fist connected to his gut, making him cough up blood.

“Sand turns solid when it comes into contact with water, dumbass.” Alex taunted and then began to close his eyes as he began to signal the final part of his plan.

“NOW KELLY!”

With a nod Kelly raised her hand up at the rain storm and closed her eyes as she concentrated. From then, just above both Alex and Cyrus, you could hear thunder.

Cyrus widened his eyes as he finally connected the dots. Alex didn’t clad his arm with iron just to give him a devastating blow.

He was using his arm as a lightning rod.

“NO! DON’T-”

But it was too late. A lightning bolt, ten times bigger than the average one had hit Alex’s fist that was still connecting with Cyrus’ gut, ultimately frying both Cyrus and Alex’s insides.

Alex could feel his consciousness fading but with all his willpower he managed to give one last lightning powered punch into Cyrus’ stomach.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!” Alex roared as he put all his strength into this last attack while remembering the faces of all who died in this death game.

Especially Ken. The man who saved his life.

Cyrus had never felt so much pain in his life. He could tell that any second he was going to pass out as the impact from Alex Yu’s fist had launched him yards away right into the wall of Area 51 as it crumbled.

Before succumbing to unconsciousness, only a few thoughts entered Cyrus Green’s mind.

Milo…

Vicky…

Mr. & Mrs. Anderson…

Kelly…

For what I’ve done…

I’m sorry.
