It would be fair to say that Flick had been through a fair lot in life.
It all started when her mother was supposedly killed in a car accident. (The keyword being ‘supposedly’, because it would be revealed that Doris McGarrett had faked her death due to her CIA past.) As a result, the three McGarrett siblings were sent away by their father, who feared for their safety. Steve was sent to military school, and Flick and her sister Mary were sent to live with their aunt.
Flick eventually made her way back to Hawaii, attending college on the island and becoming a cop, following in her father’s footsteps. Then, her father died and her brother came home after several years away on various deployments, establishing an elite task force that he naturally recruited her to. Along with her father’s former partner, that former partner’s cousin fresh out of the police academy, and the detective put in charge of her father’s murder – the man who would become her future husband.
So, it would again be fair to say that Flick had been through a lot in life. And it made her appreciate the little moments.
Moments like this.
Flick had known Danny since he first transferred to Honolulu from Newark. So, the bond had already existed between them, and the bond only grew deeper as they worked together on the Five-0 Task Force. It had not taken them long for them to start dating after the task force’s formation. Before long, they were buying a house together, and now, there was a diamond ring adorning the fourth finger of Flick’s left hand, with a wedding band to follow in the coming weeks.
“Hey, Sunshine, what do you think?” Danny asked, holding up a spoon with a tomato-based sauce.
Flick’s smile only grew as she let Danny move the spoon up to her mouth. He was preparing the sauce for the chicken pasta bake they were making together.
Letting the flavour savour on her taste buds for a long minute, Flick smacked her lips and hummed in consideration before deciding, “Just a touch more pepper, Jersey.”
Danny tasted it himself and found himself agreeing with Flick’s assessment. It did need a bit more pepper.
While Danny went to add the pepper, Flick turned back to the simple salad she was preparing to go with the pasta bake. The garlic bread would join the pasta bake in the oven when the time was right. It was an easy dinner they both enjoyed, and they would have leftovers for the nights when they were too exhausted to cook.
On the small radio in the kitchen, they had it tuned to a classic radio station. Tonight seemed to be a Motown Night, as the station was playing one Motown hit after another.
It was as they were putting the pasta bake and garlic bread in the oven that the song changed. It didn’t take long for Flick to recognize the classic intro to I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) by the Four Tops. The freedom of having their dinner in the oven enabled Danny to pull Flick into his arms. Flick’s laughter echoed around the kitchen until it was silenced with a tender kiss. When the intro was finished, Danny began dancing with her around the kitchen, singing along to the song that talked about a powerful, overwhelming love. A love they most certainly felt for one another. Flick was laughing and singing along.
It had been a long day for both of them. It was a light-hearted moment they both needed. Cooking together and dancing to songs on the radio amidst finalizing their wedding preparations.
It may have been a small moment, but it was a moment that Flick would treasure for the rest of her life.
