Dancing

Summary:

It's powwow season, and that means one of two things. Dean gets no sleep, and Sam is going to be a menace.

Notes:

Making the Winchester's native because I can. Happy Indigenous Day!! I say as it's almost over.

P.S. Dean would've been that pretty boy that girls kept asking if they can marry him. My brother was that guy and once we were offered cows for the marriage. We declined lol.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Sam woke up, tripping over Dean, “Dude…” Dean complained, and Sam nudged him, “It’s time to get up anyway. Let’s go!” Dean looked at the time, “I am not getting up at 4 a.m. you’re out of your goddamn mind–”

“I can’t believe you got me up at 4.” Dean grumbled, Sam rolled his eyes, “Where are my hair ties?" Dean dug into his pocket and dropped them onto the counter, “Why did you have them?” Dean yawned into his coffee, “Because you have the better ones.”

“You cut your hair.” Sam said, and Dean shrugged, “I meant better for shooting.” Sam rolled his eyes and started on his hair. “I thought you’d relax since we’re not out of state this year.” Sam fiddled with a knot in his hair before he turned to Dean who rolled his eyes but accepted the brush. “You expected me to not worry? Where do you live, under a rock?”

Dean scoffed, “Look up,” Dean said, and Sam did. “And no, that’s offensive and you’re supposed to be the progressive one.” Dean muttered, Sam flicked him. “Shut up.” Dean shook his head, “Today’s youth, suffering from no respect.”

“You’re right, I should respect my elders.” Sam said, and Dean swatted him, “Hey, if I’m old, you’re old.” Sam scoffed, “No, when you’re old. You’re old. We’re not twins.” Dean smoothed out the last bit of Sam’s hair. “Am I braiding?”

Sam looked at Dean’s hands, “No, it looks like they’re stationary.” Dean flicked him, “You can’t ever just answer a question. Gotta be a smart ass.” Sam shrugged, “I tried to be a dumbass but you already took that role.”

“Alright, have fun doing your own hair,” Dean said, and Sam sighed, “It’s fine, I’ll still say you did my hair.” He picked up his hair and started to braid loosely and Dean sighed, “You’re so annoying.” Sam smiled, “Glad you noticed, I was inspired by the Greats, like you.”

“Such a little shit,” Dean said ready to smack his head when Bobby walked in, “Would you shut up already. I’m about to send you outside to deal with rez dogs.” They both quieted, and Bobby grabbed the coffee pot. They waited for him to pour it and get a sip before starting up again, “Dean started it.”

“I did not!” Dean argued, and Bobby sighed, “I don’t care who started it, I want you both to stop it. Why are you two up so damn early anyway?” Dean pointed at Sam while Sam smiled sheepishly. Bobby shook his head, “Should’ve known.”

Bobby went to the drumming circle while Sam and Dean scoped out the booths. They didn’t get very far before Dean recognized someone and tskked, “You said you weren’t going to be here.” Gabriel rolled his eyes and sighed, “Who invited you?”

Both glared before Gabriel got out of his booth and pulled Dean into a hug, “What’re you doing here?” Dean asked, and Gabriel pointed back at the booth, “Cas, he wanted to see Sam.” Castiel popped his head out, “As if you didn’t want to see Dean. Hi, Dean.”

“Hey, Cas.” Dean waved and looked at Sam scoping out the jewelry, “Sammy!” He called out, and Sam rolled his eyes until he saw Gabriel. “Is Cas here?”

Gabriel looked at Dean, “Am I chopped liver?” Dean shrugged, “Must be. But you know today’s youth.” Gabriel nodded, “So lost from our culture of respecting others.” Dean nodded, “Indeed. These fuckers.”

Sam ignored them and ran to the back meeting Castiel, “Hey.” Sam greeted, and Castiel smiled, “Hey.” Dean and Gabriel laughed at them, Dean motioned for Gabriel to stand back. When he did, he ran up and held his hands in front of him, swaying, “Hey.”

“Hey.” Gabriel greeted back, and the two burst into laughter, both Sam and Castiel were glaring at them. “Just for that, I’m stealing him.” Sam said, and dashed off, holding Castiel’s hand. Gabriel stopped laughing, “Hey. He’s the one who handles the money. I tried putting him on customer service and even for Natives he’s too rude.”

Dean laughed, “What his people skills ain’t good?” Gabriel shook his head, “You’ve heard him say that?” Dean nodded, “More than once. So… Do I get a discount?” Gabriel crossed his arms, “Wow.”

“What?” Dean said, and Gabriel shook his head, “I’ll give you the family discount, it’s five more dollars than the original price.” Dean threw his hands up, “How’s that fair?” Gabriel shrugged, “You asked for a discount, not fair. Besides, we’re a small local business–”

“This is not your main job.” Dean said, and Gabriel continued on, “And you want to take money from it, for shame.” Dean rolled his eyes, “You literally don’t work unless it’s powwow season. Mr. Rich.”

“Hey, Mr. Rich is my Dad’s name, just call me Richard.” Gabriel said with a wink and Dean stared at him, “I think I’ll stick with what I usually call you, Dick.”

Castiel stood near the drums watching Sam dancing, he was always memorized by the Grasshopper dancers already, but Sam… He was his favorite dancer ever. His regalia was mainly red, and black. Hints of blue used as accents. He always recognized him even before they began talking, Castiel knew who Sam was. Castiel never learned to dance, Gabriel knew how but unfortunately, by the time Castiel could they stopped dancing. It was funeral after funeral. And by the time he could, he didn’t want to. Called himself a jinx, and he’s better off just sitting in the crowd.

Gabriel tried to teach him a few times, dancing Chicken, but he wasn’t interested. Mostly because Gabriel was a horrible teacher. But Castiel was fine just watching Sam dance. A few times before he was introduced to Sam he’d see him in the crowd. Sam and Dean always seemed to have a crowd after dancing, Gabriel rolled his eyes seeing Castiel watching them. “They’re just pretty boys, you can talk to them.”

Castiel took more offense to that comment than the Winchesters had, Dean embraced it and Sam ignored it. But Castiel insisted they weren’t just pretty boys. And to be fair, he was right, but still.

Gabriel wasn’t surprised to see Castiel watching him now, he figured it out from the announcements. He couldn’t say anything because Castiel knew he took a break to watch Dean dance Fancy. Instead he stopped and watched Sam too. He had to give it to the kid, he could move.

Castiel noticed him and rolled his eyes, “I’m not the only one who can count, even Balt could do it.” Gabriel laughed, “I’m not here to grab you, just watching.” He assured, and Castiel nodded. Neither spoke again, just watched until the music came to an end. Castiel tuned out everything while he watched Sam come over, “Hey.”

“Hey.” Castiel smiled, and Gabriel laughed. They glared at him and he took that as his cue to leave. “I’m keeping this on for a few more rounds.” Sam told Castiel who nodded, “Figured, too early in the day for you to be done dancing.”

Sam chuckled, “You swear I’m the only one out there dancing.” Castiel shrugged, “The only one that I can see.” Castiel corrected, and Sam shook his head and kissed Castiel who was happy to receive it. Castiel dug into his sweater and held out a bag, “I walked around a bit and thought of you.”

Castiel set the bag onto Sam’s hands, and he pulled earrings out of the bag, they were beaded, and in Sam’s colors. “You didn’t have to.” Sam said, and Castiel waved him off, “You were going to get them anyway.” Sam kissed Castiel’s cheek, making Castiel match his earrings a bit.

Dean found them and immediately spotted the earrings, “Damn it, I was trying to get those for Sam first.” Castiel shrugged, “Have to be faster than that, Dean.” Dean glared at him and back at Sam, “Have you seen Bobby?”

“Yeah, he’s off eating.” Sam said, and Dean gave him a thumbs up and disappeared. Castiel chuckled and Sam looped his arm around Castiel’s. “I got you a surprise too.” Castiel raised an eyebrow up, “Yeah?” Sam nodded. Castiel tried getting more information, but Sam’s lips were sealed shut.

Castiel had been in the booth again when Sam came up to it, “C’mon, we’re going to be late.” Castiel frowned, “For what?” Gabriel chuckled, “You don’t even like being back here, go!” He shooed Castiel away who decided to follow Sam’s lead. Sam pulled him to the front and expected to stay there.

Jingle had just been dancing, and to Castiel’s knowledge Sam didn’t know any of these ones. But he stood by Sam’s side nonetheless. He should’ve listened to the announcer because next thing Castiel knew he was in the arena balancing a potato against Sam’s forehead.

“I can’t believe this is your surprise.” Castiel muttered, and Sam laughed, and almost made them drop it already. “Please, I’ve seen you watch them before. Even said you’d want to try it once. So here we are.”

Castiel sighed, “I meant just me and you, not in the arena.” Sam smiled, “Don’t worry, we’ll treat it like it’s just me and you.” The drumming started, and they were told to put their hands behind their back and start moving. “We’ve got this.” Sam assured Castiel who gave him a weak smile. Some people already dropped theirs and were instructed to put it back in the bag. “Not the first ones out.” Sam encouraged.

Sam had to bend an awkward height to reach Castiel’s level, Castiel’s only option was to look into Sam’s eyes. But they were a distraction, Sam felt the same way about Castiel’s. As the song continued, and more people got out Castiel gained a bit more confidence. At least until the next instruction was dance on one leg. Sam bit down his laugh at Castiel’s panic. “It’s okay, you’ve got it.”

Castiel raised his foot, he noticed Sam had no problem. “A dancer asking a non-dancer to dance.” Castiel chastised and Sam hummed, “It’s the way to go.” Castiel scoffed. The potato began to roll but they caught it. Both sighed in relief and were told to put their feet down.

More people got out, both moved back into sync. Easy steps as they moved in a circle. They were then instructed to start moving down. Castiel sighed, “This is easy for you.” Sam chuckled, “A grasshopper moving down? Never heard of that before.” Castiel rolled his eyes as they slowly moved down, almost dropping the potato again. Sam glanced around and there were a few more people along with them.

They were told to go in a circle, that of which the two were already doing. But it meant they didn’t have to try and keep steadily bringing their bodies down, they closed the gap and focused on the circle movement. Someone next to them dropped their potato and were out.

“Backwards! Go Backwards!” Castiel looked at Sam panicked, but Sam started stepping backwards, “It’s okay,” Sam said. “Just baby steps backwards.” Castiel sighed, “Never letting you surprise me again.”

More people got out and the announcer grabbed their attention, “Only two couples left.” Castiel tried to look but Sam hummed to grab his attention. Castiel looked back into his eyes, and focused on being told to go down again. They did, met the same middle mark they did earlier and were told to go further down.

Sam let Castiel lead and the potato began to fall, Castiel caught it with his cheek, and Sam tried to roll it up but overshot it. His head bumped into Castiel’s cheek instead and they both laughed. They were out, and cheers went to the other couple. They picked up their potato and put it back into the bag, “Not bad for your first try.”

They watched the other couple carry out the rest of the song and walk to get their prize. “I think I won.” Sam said, pulling Castiel back out of the arena. “Oh, yeah?” Sam nodded, “I mean, what’s a better prize than you?”

“Aww, you’re objectifying me.” Castiel said, and Sam burst out laughing in shock, “That is not what I meant.” Castiel kept it up, “I don’t know, Sam. I mean objectification is no laughing matter. Especially native men-” Sam kissed Castiel, and whatever he’d been saying died off on his tongue.

“Oh, break it up.” Dean called out, “Yeah!” Gabriel added on and the two glared at them. “I swear you two just stalk us.” Dean shrugged, “It’s not that hard to find a moose in the crowd.” Sam rolled his eyes, “Whatever. Is that Balt?” Sam asked, motioning with his head, Gabriel and Dean turned to look and when they turned back Sam and Castiel had ran off. “We weren’t like that, were we?” Dean asked, and Gabriel shook his head.

“Definitely not. We were worse.” Dean laughed, pulling Gabriel into his arms, and kissed him. “Yeah, probably.”

Notes:

This was purely self indulgent, to no one's surprise. It's a treat to me <3 but also because I'm missing the powwow season. Specifically dancing if you couldn't tell. And since I can't participate since I'm in mourning, I'll just write about it instead. Hope y'all enjoyed <333
