Work Text:

“Are you going on a trip?”

Evan Buckley looked up at the sound of his best friend’s voice. They had just finished a shift with the 118 and Buck hadn’t realised that Eddie had been waiting for him. While the others had been quick to change out of their uniforms and head home, Buck had stayed to have a shower before leaving.

“No?” Buck frowned.

“What’s with all the blankets and pillows then?” Eddied asked, tapping on the Jeep glass.

Buck looked in his backseat. Folded up were several blankets and pillows that he had put in his jeep before leaving for his shift that morning.

“Oh, just need them for tonight,” Buck said, giving a little shrug, putting his bag on the back seat.

“What’s tonight?” Eddie asked, frowning. “You didn’t say anything about having plans today.”

Was it Buck’s imagination or was Eddie pouting right now. Buck grinned at the thought that Eddie was a little jealous that he had plans that didn’t involve him, and he chuckled to himself.

“I’m just doing a little road trip,” Buck said. “I’ll be back tomorrow, don’t worry.”

“Road trip,” Eddie repeated slowly, brows furrowing. “To where?”

“There is a market that’s coming to the area but it’s a bit of hike to get there,” Buck explained. “There is this artist that May really likes, and they are going to be there. But May can’t get out of work so I said I would go for her.”

“You’re going to road trip to a market just to pick something up for May?” Eddie said.

“Sure,” Buck grinned. “You know I love a good market.”

Eddie stared at Buck, giving his head a little shake. “That’s really sweet of you, Buck.”

“It’s no big deal,” Buck shrugged again. “Apparently the artist always sells out really quickly, so I wanted to be there before they opened. Hence the pillows and blankets.”

“You’re going to sleep in your jeep,” Eddie stated. “Buck! You can’t do that.”

“It’s fine, Eddie,” Buck said, closing the backdoor to his jeep. “I used to do it all the time. It’s one night. I’ll live.”

Eddie frowned at that, and his jaw clenched tightly.

“Any way, I want to head off,” Buck said. “See you tomorrow?”

Eddie sighed again. “See you tomorrow. And call me. At any time. Let me know you got there safely, okay.”

“Will do!” Buck beamed. He gave Eddie a quick kiss before he moved to the driver’s seat. He climbed in and got himself ready before turning the engine on. He gave Eddie one last grin and waved before heading out.

Buck had already planned his route and had researched food spot in the area that he could stop for dinner. He put on his road trip play list and made his way towards the market. It was a nice day and even with the heavy traffic, Buck was making good time. He expected Eddie to give him a call along the way, or even a message but there was nothing. He thought he was probably busy with Chris and so Buck called Maddie instead, telling him of his plans.

“That’s so nice of you, Buck,” Maddie said. “You’re a really good friend.”

“Thanks,” Buck said, pleased at the compliment. “I’ll pick you up something nice too.”

“You don’t have too,” Maddie said.

“I want to,” Buck said.

“Then I look forward to seeing you tomorrow,” Maddie said, and Buck could hear the smile in her voice. “I can shout us lunch. How does that sound?”

“Sounds great!” Buck said.

He ended the conversation not long after and kept driving. When he finally made it to the area, the sun had set, and Buck’s stomach was rumbling.

He pulled over to a small restaurant and parked in the carpark. He unhooked his phone from the charger, sent Eddie, Maddie, and May a quick message and climbed out. The restaurant was small and cosy. They welcomed Buck joyfully and he treated himself to a delicious meal with some dessert. When he was full, he paid with a generous tip and made his way back to the jeep.

Buck made his way to where the Market was, canvas tents already set up. He parked in the car park and got out. Years of sleeping in his jeep meant that he could fold down the seats and make a comfortable bed in no time. When it was done, he climbed inside, locking the doors, and settled in for the night.

Buck pulled out his phone and opened his text thread with Eddie –

Buck bolted upright.

“Holy shit,” Buck breathed in the darkness of the jeep. “I kissed Eddie.”

It hit him, suddenly, of what he had done when he had said goodbye to Eddie at the station. No wonder Eddie had barely texted him throughout the trip.

Without a second thought, Buck was calling Eddie. It rang several times before Eddie’s voice finally floated through the speaker.

“Hey.”

“I kissed you,” Buck blurted out.

There was silence and then Eddie cleared his throat. “You did.”

“I – it was instinct,” Buck continued to ramble. “I should have had better control. I’m sorry.”

“It was instinct to give me a kiss goodbye?” Eddied asked.

Buck felt himself flushing hot. “Kind of.”

Eddie hummed. “So, you’ve been wanting to kiss me?”

Buck swallowed thickly. This isn’t exactly a conversation he wanted to have on the phone, not when he couldn’t see Eddie, but he supposed he had no choice.

“Not if you don’t want me to be thinking about that,” Buck said. “If you want to forget it, we can.”

“I don’t want to forget it,” Eddie said quickly.

Buck’s heart stuttered in his chest. “You don’t?”

“No,” Eddie said, and Buck could hear the smile in his voice. “Kind of wish you knew what you were doing before you left for the night.”

Buck huffed a laugh. “Yeah, me too. Guess my timing sucks, huh?”

“No,” Eddie said. “It doesn’t. I…I wouldn’t have been ready, before.”

Buck swallowed thickly. “And you are now?”

“Yeah,” Eddie said, voice confident. “I was working up the courage to ask you out.”

“Yes,” Buck said quickly.

Eddie laughed on the other end. “Good to know.”

Buck grinned down the line.

“Where are you now?” Eddie asked.

“In my jeep at the market car park,” Buck said, looking out the window.

“Are you comfortable?” Eddie asked and Buck could hear the frown in his voice. “How is your leg going?”

Buck looked down at the leg that had once been crushed under a fire truck. “It’s fine. I’ve been stretching.”

“Good,” Eddie said. “Just…be safe, okay. I don’t want you getting into trouble when I’m not there to help.”

Buck felt himself melting. “I’ll be fine, Ed’s.”

“Yeah, well, with your luck,” Eddie huffed, trailing off.

Buck chuckled quietly. “I promise I’ll be fine.”

“Da-ad!” Chris’s voice echoed in the distance.

“Uh, I have to go,” Eddie said. “Text me at any time, okay.”

“I will,” Buck said. “Love you.”

Eddie paused on the other end. “Instinct again?”

“No,” Buck grinned. “Love you.”

Eddie swore in Spanish as Chris’s voice rang out again. “You better come home straight after the market.”

“I will,” Buck said. “Night, Eddie.”

“Night Buck,” Eddie said, voice soft.

Buck hung with a smile on his lips. He made himself comfortable among the pillows and blankets, smiling up at the roof of his jeep. The last time he had slept in his car, he hadn’t known where he was going to end up. But now, this time when he woke up, he knew that he would be heading home and he couldn’t wait.
