Chapter Text

Sebastian had to be honest; Sam had made it very hard for him to win the challenge. The boy was crazy, driving them all the way out to Zuzu City. But it had been one of the best evenings in his entire life, even if he felt guilty about all of the money Sam had spent.

His friend probably wouldn’t have done that two years ago, even if he was a quite generous person. But something had changed – other than him getting that shitty job at Joja Mart and his own car.

Something between them.

He saw it in the way Sam looked at him. The line between friendship and something more had started to blur, and he knew it wouldn’t take too long before it faded altogether. Anticipation tugged at his stomach, getting stronger day after day, and he couldn’t wait until he would finally feel Sam’s skin under his palms, those lips against his own and call him his boyfriend.

Sebastian had never imagined himself falling in love, especially not with his best friend of all people. But it was kind of bound to happen. He didn’t hang out with too many people, and with how much time he spent with Sam, of course it had to be him.

Sebastian had had his gay crisis a few years ago, and Abigail and Sam hadn’t given a single fuck about his sexuality, so that hadn’t been a problem. The problems – at least back then – had been, that Sam always mentioned hot girls and never guys, and that he was his fucking best friend.

But all of that wasn’t important anymore because of the way Sam had looked at him at the arcade, and all of the lingering touches and glances before that. Of course, Sebastian had noticed. He may have the worst social skills in existence, but that didn’t keep him from trying to get people, and Sam was one of the easy ones to read if you knew him well enough.

After the night in the city, Sebastian knew what his present was going to be, and he was sure that he would win their little challenge.

A week had passed, Christmas had gone by with the usual family dinners and gift exchanges, and Sebastian was just glad to be finally left alone in his room to work on his projects. It was this weird week between the holidays and the new year, where everything was clouded in stillness. It provided the perfect mood for his present.

Sebastian was waiting for Sam, leaning against the garage door with an almost burnt out cigarette between his fingers. When he saw him approaching in that cute beanie of his, he dropped the stump to the ground and put it out with the heel of his boot.

"You’re late", he chided playfully.

"Sorry", Sam sheepishly scratched the back of his neck, "had to finish that one episode of Ninjago with Vincent. You know how he is."

Of course Sebastian knew. He was as familiar with Vincent’s antics as he was with Sam’s.

He pushed himself off the wall and pointed towards his blue motorcycle and the two helmets placed on the seat.

"Climb on, Sammy. We’re going for a ride."

After putting on their helmets, Sebastian got onto his bike with Sam settling himself behind him. He was painfully aware of all the places their bodies touched, Sam’s chest pressed against his back and his strong arms around his torso. After starting the engine and heading off towards his goal, Sebastian forced his attention elsewhere – specifically on the road ahead.

The ride didn’t take too long – it was freezing outside, and the cold wind was biting through his layers of clothes. He just needed to bring them to a place far away from any source of artificial light.

Sebastian came to a halt on an empty field next to the edge of a forest and attached his bike to a tree. Even though they were probably the only people in a ten mile radius, he still wanted to ensure the safety of the most expensive thing he owned.

Sam took off his helmet and put his beanie back on, and Sebastian wanted to rip it off again just to see his disheveled blonde hair. He managed to hold himself back and instead retrieved the thick picnic blanket from his top box, spreading it out on the frozen, but fortunately mostly dry ground. There'd been barely any snowfall this winter, which, although slightly ruining the Christmas vibes, came in very convenient right now.

"You prepared a picnic? I had dinner like an hour ago."

Although Sam tried to make it sound like a light-hearted joke, Sebastian could sense a hint of disappointment lying underneath. He huffed and sprawled himself out on the blanket, leaving his best friend enough room to gracelessly drop down beside him.

"Nope, I don’t have any food. I’ll buy you something later if you want."

Sam hummed. Sebastian sighed.

"I know it’s corny, but I wanted to show you the stars. You know, when everything gets too much, I drive by myself out here at night. It’s kind of freeing to just lie here."

Instead of looking at the stars, Sebastian let his head fall to the side to watch his best friend. Their shoulders and arms were pressed against each other, and it wouldn’t take much for him to reach out and take Sam’s hand.

So he did.

His heart was pounding like crazy inside of his chest. Sam’s hand was cold, and he whipped his head to Sebastian when their fingers touched. His eyes were blown wide, mouth slightly parted, and a puff of white air escaped his lips.

"What…?"

Sebastian interlaced their fingers and tried to ignore the waves of nervousness that almost made him nauseous. But Sam hadn’t snatched his hand away yet. There was no need to back out now.

"After the arcade, I thought you were going to kiss me."

Although Sebastian’s voice was quiet, it sounded loud in the stillness of night. It was cold and dark, and he was kind of glad he couldn’t see every detail of Sam’s face right now.

Sam huffed out a laugh and turned his gaze back to the sky.

"I almost did, but I guess I’m too much of a coward."

Sebastian squeezed his hand lightly.

"You’re not a coward", his voice took on a teasing tone, "you just gave me the opportunity to beat you at the challenge."

Sam turned his whole body around then, confusion evident on what little Sebastian could make out of his face.

"What-"

He didn’t give Sam enough time to voice his question, shutting him up by burying his free hand in his mullet to tug him closer. Sam’s lips were cold at first, but they warmed up under Sebastian’s own. It didn’t take the blonde long to overcome his shock, and after he kissed Sebastian back, they both lost themselves in the moment.

Sebastian closed his eyes and moved closer to his best friend, entangling their legs to feel more of Sam’s body. If they’d be lying in a bed now, he would’ve climbed on top of him. If it hadn’t been that cold, he would’ve slipped his hands underneath Sam’s sweater to trace his skin. They definitely needed to continue this once they got home.

The way Sam kissed him was so sweet and gentle, but Sebastian could sense an underlying want behind it, one that tugged at his stomach as well.

Despite the cold, he felt like he was burning from the inside. His thighs were straddling Sam’s torso now, and he pulled his hand out of their grasp so it could join his other in his blonde hair. As soon as he licked over Sam’s bottom lip, the other boy eagerly opened his mouth for him, and their kiss became messy and desperate.

God, he had wanted this for so long. By the way Sam kissed him back he could only assume it was the other way around too. All of the pent up tension from the last few weeks, months even, bled into their kiss, and Sebastian couldn’t get enough of it.

Time didn’t seem to matter anymore. Only when the cold seeped into their little bubble of warmth did they break apart, and only then did Sebastian really process what had just happened. A grin tugged at his lips. His voice was breathy when he spoke.

"So, did I win the challenge?"

Sam huffed out a laugh.

"Of course that's the first thing that comes to your mind, idiot. I'd say it’s a draw."

Sebastian elbowed him playfully, which proved to be difficult considering he still sat on top of the other. He stood up, reaching for Sam’s hand to help him up, and once they were both on their feet, he pulled him into a hug.

"I totally won."

His friend – boyfriend? –  hugged him tighter and shook his face that was nestled into the crook of Sebastians neck.

They didn’t even need to tell Abigail that they were a thing now. It was the first thing she asked when they met her in the saloon, babbling something about how 'their vibes had shifted'. Sebastian just gave her the finger and pressed a kiss to Sam’s temple.

He’d definitely enjoy this evening; playing and beating his friends at pool and at Journey of the Prairie King, stealing kisses from Sam when Abigail wasn’t paying attention to them, and – most importantly – getting free pizza and free drinks from his new boyfriend.

Somehow he'd managed to convince him after a bit of arguing that – despite the beautiful evening Sam had gifted him – he just couldn’t beat a first-kiss-turned-make-out-session. Sebastian felt very smug about this.

He didn’t give a fuck about the free pizza or the free drinks though. Not, when Sam was right next to him, with his crooked smile, and his vibrant eyes, and his stupid jokes, and Sebastian could call him his boyfriend.

Notes:

who do you think should've won the challenge? sam or seb? ;)
