A plush bat, cheap carnival prize from some forgotten summer, is crushed against his sternum, its felt wings fraying under the pressure of his grip. His face is turned toward the window, wet with tears that catch the dim light, and Eddie’s unbeating heart lurches in a way that has nothing to do with venom or hive-mind compulsion.
