Comment on Moments

  1. ah man, I’m a hundred percent sure that if this series had been written by anyone else, Kaladin would be a rape survivor in-text. This feels like a very authentic look at “why,” (because his owners could, and because they wanted to see a proud man taken down) and also at how Kaladin would deal with it (ignore it as long as he could and then share it in one moment of blazing courage with the one man he knows won’t judge him for it).

I also appreciated how Adolin had to come to terms with his own complicitness in slavery as an institution, and how his not personally raping any slaves didn’t actively do good, or help in any way. It’s a problem canon glosses over, so taking time here to really confront it was nice.

Also also, a big fan of how the boys get to hug it out and cuddle on the couch all night to deal with their big feelings. It happened and it sucks, but it’s over and Kaladin made it through, and Adolin gets to love on him now, and let him know that he’s appreciated and feed him breakfast and take care of him <3

    1. wow what a comment.

when i wrote this, it was just kill your darlings, kill your darlings one after the other. basically, i wrote the whole thing, then went back and said to myself, would he really do that, if he were a victim of something like this? would he really say that? and it whittled down into this, something that felt genuine and true to how i see the characters. maybe adolin is a little more expressive than he's portrayed in the books, but this is also an extremely emotional situation, and i feel like he absolutely has the capability to be that empathetic, especially for something so horrific that was done to someone he loves.

sorry, went on a tangent there. not even sure if i'm making sense. but i'm very glad it felt authentic to you. i love the ignore it as long as he could and then share it in one moment of blazing courage with the one man he knows won't judge him for it. guh, how perfectly put, you hit the nail right on the head.

yesssss, the complicitness of ALL lighteyes in slavery. i feel like, if anyone could come to terms with it (without being overly logical and almost emotionless -- im looking at you, jasnah), it would be adolin.

all the hugs, all the cuddles, all the feelings.

thank you so much for your review, you made my week. <3

      1. killing your darlings can be so hard, I sympathize immensely. “would he say that?” is also such a pain. Adolin was more emotional here than we see him be on-page, but it also feels in-character still—like he’s probably had breakdowns over stuff before and we just don’t get to see it in canon because it doesn’t advance the plot, but he’s definitely still having them. Adolin is an emotional guy, and he’s not really a fan of trying to hide that.

<3 I’m glad to have made your week! The fic was excellent, and deserves a good review
