I love the way you use the Buzz Lightyear mythos in this first chapter, brought right back into the world of Toy Story/Lightyear right from the start with that Buzz poster being a reference to a poster Andy has in his room. I’m curious to see how Alex deals with going to Planet Mojang, definitely picturing squares all around and her being so confused on how things work there compared to other places all around the galaxy. And while I am a bit iffy on the lieutenant’s name being a reference to a certain Pixar figure who is pretty complicated, he seems like a sensible authority type so far that knows Alex can do a good job. Hope Alex can get back to Andi after the mission is over and done with, their relationship is looking quite cute so far and being separated from your partner for so long sounds painful. I knew I wanted to do a crossover fic between Minecraft and another media that dealt with galactic exploration. I had thought of doing Star Trek, Firefly, or maybe even Cowboy Bebop, but Lightyear’s story really inspired me to go with Space Rangers.
Alex is definitely in better hand’s with her lieutenant than she would be with a certain executive. I could have always chosen not to use his name, and maybe in the future I might change it, but I used every single creative mind from both Pixar as well as the Minecraft’s creator’s names in this opening chapter and it seemed out of place not to include him as well.
Even though it was very heartbreaking to split up the happy couple, Alex will have a goal in mind and something to strive for as she tries to survive this strange, new planet.
Will the planet be a world of cubes? You’ll just have to read to find out 😉
