Patricia "Pat" Lenox is a marine research and educator for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation at Port Isobel, Virginia. She meets the amygdaline aptly named Chesapeake and her life takes quite a turn.

“HOW LONG SINCE YOU HAVE COMMUNED WITH OUR BELOVED?”
Ampersand only just lifted his head. His fingers lingered on the skin above her pubic mound, one stretched digit forming small circles against thin pubic hair. “Three weeks,” he said. “Since it proved successful.”
“AND YOU DID NOT TELL ME. YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN KEEN ON YOUR SECRETS,” but he didn't sound particularly perturbed. “I HAD THOUGHT YOUR BOND CHANGED. BUT I ASSUMED IT ONLY AS A RESULT OF PROLONGED BONDING TO AN ORGANIC.”
(The influence of successful high language experimentation has deepened Cora and Ampersand's understanding of one another, to a point Cora 'convinces' Ampersand to involve his sympyle, Nikola. Nikola agrees not realizing they had already been able to preform high language and is pleasantly surprised. Short fluffy poly fun ensues. Set after TOTD where everyone is okay somehow?? Don't think too hard about it lol)

“Feel like you need a bath, too?” She asked playfully, trying to mask her embarrassment that he was right next to her naked body.
“There is no need for me to bathe,” he stated plainly. “And my body self-regulates its temperature.”
She absently studied his legs from her vantage point, then pursed her bottom lip in a half-pout. “You can bathe just for fun. Do amygdalines ever do that?”
She could tell his head quirked down towards her, though she couldn't meet his eye. “No. But proto-amygdalines utilized dirt, mud, and liquid baths for both recreation and hygiene.”
(Set after Truth of the Divine. They are in hiding, no longer wanting or feeling safe enough to work with the government. Cora decides she needs a bath and uses the only body of water she can, a cold stream. Ampersand goes with her.)

Ampersand puts his head in her lap, a deliberate show of trust, and says, “The loss of a symphyle can never be replaced. I will not attempt to do so, but I do, and will continue to feel—” he deliberates on what word to use and then decides on “—empty. I miss Obelus but I do not want him back.”
That’s… not the worst thing he could’ve said.
“Hmm,” Cora answers. Like she can’t relate. Like he just told her a fun thought experiment to consider. Like there isn’t a Nils-shaped supermassive black hole inside of her that’s starting to form its own fucking galaxy.
