Verso's smile widened, and Gustave knew with crystal clarity that the universe had a sick sense of humor. His Friday night blues had just become his Monday morning colleague.
"We've met," Verso said easily, still watching Gustave with those piercing eyes. "Haven't we, Gustave?"
The use of his full name was deliberate. Not a question, not a tease. A claim. It landed in Gustave’s gut like a stone, heavy and cold, followed by the slow bloom of heat at his throat where the bruises still ached.
He was so, so fucked.

“Loved him?” The words spat out. His nose scrunched, brows furrowing. “No.” He shook his head, voice low and gruff. Lifting his cane, he held it as he pointed his index finger at her. “No, you used him.”

Summary
Verso couldn't look away as he saw grief in every shade imaginable. They made their way through the crowd, being bombarded with questions from shocked citizens.
The shouting around him became muffled, with no way of distinguishing between the voices. The world around him distorted like he was drowning, and Verso wasn't even sure if he was in his own body anymore. He passed by angry faces, looking at him directly, shouting something he couldn't make out. Some were crying, tears streaming down their faces, hysterical, clutching their heads in their hands. There were people tugging at his coat trying to get his attention, seeking an explanation for what was happening.
Verso could do nothing but mutely follow behind his father, taking one heavy step after another.

Gustave ne répondit pas. Il aurait menti s’il avait dit qu’il n’y avait jamais pensé. Maelle elle-même, avec son flair d’adolescente trop lucide, l’avait déjà taquiné sur le sujet. Et maintenant, c’était Sophie qui s’y mettait.
Mais à chaque fois que cette idée prenait forme dans son esprit, une ombre la balayait aussitôt. Une ombre qui portait le nom de Sophie.
Pourquoi cette fidélité maladive à une histoire finie ? Peut-être parce qu’une partie de lui n’avait jamais vraiment tourné la page.
Et maintenant, il était trop tard. Dans quelques heures, Sophie ne serait plus qu’un souvenir. Ils partiraient pour l’Expédition 33.

Verso Dessendre had one person in his life. His inspiration, his sole purpose for living in this facade of a family; his six year old little sister, Alicia. When a fire took over their home, caused by the Writers, and Alicia was nowhere to be found, everyone assumed she had perished. They had nothing to prove it. But she couldn't have.
