King Arthur returned without Merlin and sent search parties to find him. When they came back empty-handed, they chose George to step in and take care of Merlin’s duties as the King’s servants. George was honoured, of course, and would use the chance to show the king how competent he was.
Merlin was found and came home with a strange behaviour. Gwen tried not to take it to heart; the poor man had been through too much. But, as she found out Merlin tried to poison Arthur, she knew something was wrong. Because everyone except Arthur knew how much Merlin loved him.

Merlin groaned, opening his cold blue eyes to glare at Arthur. He struggled, twisting wildly, but Arthur was too strong. That’s not Merlin, Arthur thought as the stranger’s chilling stare seemed to penetrate his soul. It can’t be.
“Who are you?!” Arthur demanded, a raw edge of desperation in his voice.
The stranger who looked like Merlin grinned ferally. “Don’t you recognise me?” He crooned in a sickly-sweet voice. “I’m your servant, Merlin.”Merlin's first murder attempt nearly succeeds, and Arthur realises how much his servant means to him.

Respects him, sure. Admires his fighting prowess, yeah. Envies his freedom and pities his lack of it in equal parts. He'll follow him into battle and mostly follow orders as he does so, because chances are Arthur’s on the right side of a fight, and even if he isn't he's got Merlin to push him until he is. But he's more than capable of all that without actually liking the man.
