Her sister-in-law, and Ishvalan widow living in the far eastern mountains takes them in, but ultimately the boys lose her and parts of themselves to the war. Ending up in Central they are found by the genius Hohenheim who claims them. A cold, callused man he uses them for their skill in alchemy, forcing Edward to join the military to advance the man's ambitions and to set a game with the Fuhrer.
Struggling to survive Ed is doing all he can to get him and his brother out, distrustful of his military superior, beaten down by Hohenheim, and constantly worried for his brother, he somehow starts to find place with Mustang's Team.

OR, Edward is born in 1488, and when Father attempts to immortalize Van Hohenheim, Edward is caught up in the circle. Newly immortal, the only family he has left is a man he's grown to resent and his brother's soul, trapped within his chest. Over the course of four hundred years, Edward fights to separate the souls in the stone, because there isn't a world where he won't give up everything for Alphonse.

After a failed transmission to revive their dead mother, the Elric brothers are punished for stepping on God's territory. Edward loses his leg and, later, his arm in an attempt to bind Alphonse's body to a suit of armor - which he lost as his punishment.
With the promise that the military can help the boys restore their bodies, Ed accepts not only becoming a State Alchemist, but also a dog of the military. But he is not the only one after the Philosopher Stone - so are a group of homunculi in order to become fully human.

"Edward," he says like it's a curse. "Just shut up and let me drive."

Mustang pulled the phone away from his face briefly in surprise, "Alphonse? No he hasn't come into work yet. Isnt he there with you? " he said, confused
