Summary

‘Tiiiiiiiill,’ Ivan sends, and Till already knows he’s fucked. ‘I get a free day next week!! Let’s meet up!’ he says, then forwards a pathetic gif of a puppy with the wettest eyes ever looking up at Till’s perplexed stare.
This is a trick. Till should say no. Till should acknowledge that he’s been acting really weird about his best friend lately and that he has to get normal before they see each other again. Till should tell Ivan to spend his once-in-a-blue-moon free day relaxing at a spa—a spa? Till frowns. People would get so fucking weird about that. He should go somewhere else where clothes are involved. Skiing sounds better—and not slouching at Till’s ass dorm. Till should get a grip.

Academically, he’d exceeded expectations. He had the right connections in the most dull of occupations. Fulfillment did not always pay the bills. He could withstand whatever soul-crushing future awaited him, a passionless existence, so long as he had something to keep him above water. Till had proven time and time again with every bandage and rejection letter and song that he wrote that he would not, could not, do the same.

Since a child, there had always been something that bugged Till growing up.
Not his lackluster, barely passing grades, not his mediocre art skills and lack of self creativity, not even his shitty father that barely even counted as a parent. No, it had been his own brain.
From before he could even remember, Till had always had a very big imagination. Most specifically, one that made itself known at night. In his dreams, ones that could just as easily have been called night terrors. They were never lucid, never gave him a choice, never gave him a chance.
Just a constant type of dream every single night.
These dreams would have been more tolerable had it not been for one thing. Or moreso, one person.
A faceless child he had seemed to grow with.

I think so.
I think he felt happy when we'd sit under that tree together and draw. When things were finally quiet and no one was looking at him. He'd stop smiling and the look in his eyes would go from determination to something more akin to curiosity. He'd touch my hand and I would mess something up. I'd nag at him but he'd just stare at me with that same expression. Like he was just trying to understand.
I think Ivan spent his entire life trying to learn how to be human. So much so that he never really had time to figure it out.
