“You do this at every camp.” He wasn’t wrong. He looked for him everywhere. Through every run-down field hospital. He took extra care through the crowds of soldiers, his eyes scanning each man laid out on the ground or on stretchers. They watched as other men in stood in groups, replenishing their supplies or sharing a cigarette. Yet, Joseph’s not once seen him. He was beginning to get worried. “So, who are you looking for?”
Joseph gulps, yet the lump in his throat does not diminish.
“A friend.” Not entirely the truth, but not entirely a lie either. They were something, but not something he could ever admit. It seemed to quieten the pair, who nod with a somber expression as they fall into step with one another again, still trailing after the tired corporal.
