A large platform dominated the center of the meadow, rising from the grass like something ancient and sacred. It was made from rough-hewn logs polished until they gleamed, their surfaces so smooth they caught the sunlight like glass. Woven garlands dangled from every post, flowers and herbs bound together in symmetrical patterns, fragrant and almost dizzying in their sweetness. The air here felt even thicker, almost pressing down on them.
On the platform sat a figure draped in white. He was taller and broader than anyone else they had seen, his robe spilling over the edges of his carved wooden throne like liquid light. Even from a distance, Isagi could feel the weight of his presence. It wasn’t the sight of him that made him feel that way, instead the pull, the way the sunlight seemed to tilt toward him, the way the villagers’ movements subtly slowed as if out of respect.
