Summary
Merlin follows Arthur on his quest to the Perilous lands, returning not just with his friend alive and well but also a new kingdom. Magic has lost so much from the purge and the years after and the first rule of magic is that there must be balance, so it gives back. Creating the Kingdom of Oplaria, rled by King Emrys.
But Merlin is not so keen to abandon his destiny and Arthur, he spends his time between the two Kingdoms constantly torn between his friendship with Arthur and his duty to his people and magic. He is good at secret identities after all.
But with Arthur constantly sidelining Merlin how long can he make excuses to stay?
And how much will this change not only the Prophecy but also the future of Albion?This is follows the show from Season 3 episode 8 -> Season 4 episode 7 but will include storylines from other episodes.
If like me you loved all the side characters well then get ready to get a lot more time with them (especially if you love Mithian, Elena and Vivian).

Or: Merlin and Arthur accidentally swap bodies. This would be a great opportunity for Merlin to relish in making Arthur muck out the stables, if the prat hadn't also gotten Merlin's magic in the exchange.

“Arthur, I know you don’t want to do this.”Arthur doesn’t look away from his father, knowing better than to give him the opportunity to gain the upper hand but even without turning, he knows Merlin’s voice and he hears the softer tone that always seems to break through to him, despite him being a servant to his Prince.
“My mother is dead because of him,” is all he manages and he barely notices how broken his own voice sounds.
A noticeable beat passes through the air and when Merlin speaks again, despite the emotion in his voice, he doesn’t deny it.

After one of Merlin's casual off-hand declarations of devotion Arthur heads to Morgana's chambers, let's himself fall dramatically on the bed, sighing like a teenage girl in a 2000s movie before telling her all about it. What Merlin said, how stunning he looked while he said it, that Arthur wanted to kiss him right there and why he couldn't (his duty to Camelot but mainly the fear of forcing Merlin into something)
And while he gushes about his manservant, ignoring his sister that look like she wants him to shut up, said manservant was hiding behind the screen in Morgana's room, because Arthur just interrupted their magic lesson.
