“Well, YOU agreed to it too. Not entirely my fault now since you played right into my hands.” The gambler rolled his eyes. The monsters they ran from rushed in incredible speeds. The gambler straightened his stance, holding out his hand towards him with a couple of poker chips between his fingers. “High risk, high reward, Ratio!”
Ratio scoffed. Becoming a warrior was not in his job description in the Intelligentsia Guild yet here he was in an unknown world washed in uncertainty with his dearest, Aventurine.

Aventurine’s chest hurts. He can feel something thick and wet dripping down his front, but when he looks down there’s nothing there.
Is this real? This can’t be real. Ratio’s expression is achingly sincere, a look that he’s never seen before. Surely the professor wouldn’t be caught directing such feelings at Aventurine of all people.
And yet, the man leans over the desk to gently brace his palms against the sides of Aventurine’s face. Aventurine realizes that he can’t feel the chair underneath him, or the scratch of fur trim against his neck, or the wood grain under his fingers—Ratio’s warm touch is the only thing that feels real.
“There are people waiting for you, Aventurine. I don’t know if that thought brings you comfort, but it is the truth.”
Aventurine is having a confusing time at the Horizon of Existence.

Aventurine nods, curiously waiting for Ratio to elaborate. Is Ratio planning to read to him? That is the sort of activity Ratio would consider leisurely, albeit rather mundane. Still, Aventurine muses, Ratio does have a pleasant voice, so it wouldn't be so bad.
With a determined nod, Ratio extends his hand expectantly, the other hovering over the book he had placed on the ladder earlier. After a moment's hesitation, Aventurine accepts.
As Ratio's hand touches the book, Aventurine feels a sudden lurch, and that's all the warning he gets before they're falling.

They were both lying– Veritas more obviously than Aventurine, for once. Veritas’s strained attempts at returning back to normalcy were snuffed out the moment Aventurine sat down on the nearest couch, guiding his eyes back to the Stoneheart’s form. Now that Veritas was this close, he couldn’t help but notice how Aventurine’s eyes seemed to almost glaze over, his smile belying the untruth that permeated in the air between them. There was no use in any of this, no sense– Veritas wanted to back down, but something in him knew that that would only make things worse.
Perhaps this was Aventurine’s twisted plan all along, and Veritas was simply too much of an idiot not to fall for it.
Veritas wants to retrieve Aventurine, but a different kind of desire soon takes hold as he finds that the Stoneheart seems to have other plans for that night.

He should be focusing on the work on his desk in front of him. Instead, he is reduced to a quivering mess at the thought of something as simple as prayer.
(It is not so simple to Aventurine, not so simple to Kakavasha. The thought of prayer alone does not leave him anxious. What does is the emptiness that surrounds him, in this room and in this life he lives. With a cold lump of dread he acknowledges the fact that he could not pray, even if he wanted to indulge the longing, because he only has one set of palms where there should be two.
The prayer would not be complete if he spoke the words alone. They require a partner, someone he can trust with this fragile piece of himself and these sacred words that will one day be lost because he is the last one to know their cadence. And surely that is where his gifted luck draws the line, because no such person exists–)
There is a knock on his office door.
