AU: In corporate law firms, associates’ employment contracts require consent to receipt of corporal punishment from supervising partners. Associates who refuse corporal punishment are subject to termination. This is legal/socially accepted within the AU.
When Harvey hires Mike, he doesn’t recognize the firm’s disciplinary policy as unethical and doesn’t intend to exempt his own associate from corporal punishment. He hadn’t expected that paddling his associate for screwing up in accordance with firm policies would feel like anything more than a distasteful inconvenience (which is how he has historically felt about having to interact with associates at all). Harvey hasn’t pre-negotiated anything protecting Mike from being punished by other partners; his associate will have to suffer just like the others… for now.
