Hypnos has his golden eyes riveted on the fishing lure, but he's staring right past it. The pole is lax in his hands.
Zagreus knows, from centuries spent around Hypnos to varying degrees, that the guy sometimes just gets like that. A little spacey, a little airy, a little impermanent and intangible like a- well, like a dream. Something wispy and immaterial, somehow physically present and yet not here at all.
The problem is, he's been doing it a lot more lately.

Zagreus pushed forward. It wasn’t a conscious thought that had him wrapping his hands around Hypnos’s, stepping close enough that he could feel the pitter-patter of his breath on his lips. “I would love to drown my sorrows with you, Hypnos. You’ve quite the talent for raising my spirits.”
There was a moment when all that existed was Hypnos’s hands in his and the not-quite-heartbeat passing through one of them to the other.
Hypnos was a friend, and Zagreus loved him. Loved him like the sun loved the stars, smiling hello to equally twinkling beacons of light. Loved him like the shore loved the waves, like springtime loved the early morning. He did not love him enough to lean into that would-be kiss, nor enough to mean the easy teasing that fell from his lips.
He did not love Hypnos the way that Hypnos loved him. He’d never realized how strong that love was before today.

"I am not permitted to speak of it," Achilles admits, with a cautious glance toward the Great Hall. He lowers his voice. "However… will you be returning to Tartarus again soon?"
"I suppose so, yes." Zagreus frowns. “Why do you ask?”
"...I suggest you make haste, lad.”
Hypnos finds himself in a perilous situation. Zagreus gains a partner-in-crime. And as they face the dangers of the Underworld together, their friendship may become something else entirely.
