The Lin Kuei are many things. Assassins. Arcanists. Guardians. They may be capable of hunting, as it is a basic tool for survival, but they are not hunters. Not in the way Smoke is.
There are no tracks, but Smoke finds other signs of his quarry. Subtle markings in the trees serving as landmarks for someone in an unfamiliar place. Tiny drops of red in the snow near a berry shrub, where a careless forager pricked their finger. The corpse of a wolf crumpled in a small clearing, its claws and jowls still slick with blood.
A small, bronze talisman bearing the Tengu’s emblem.
In the present, Smoke hunts.
In the past, Tomáš is hunted.

Hiyori whines again but accepts the bottle of water he’s handed. “I’m not even drunk,” he insists. He twists the cap off of his water and brings it up to his mouth, and promptly spills it down the front of his shirt.
“You were saying?” Jun says, raising his eyebrows.
“It’s cold,” Hiyori wails. “Jun-kun, fix it!”
If this is as bad as it gets, Jun can handle it. He’s certainly handled a whiny Hiyori too many times to count, so really, this is no different. But he can’t help but be hyper aware, waiting for any changes in Hiyori’s behavior. Waiting for something to go wrong.

“Actually,” Ibara scans the cafe for someone to use. His eyes land on the barista that served him his coffee earlier. He jerks a finger towards the blue-haired man, whose back is currently turned towards them. “That guy’s my boyfriend. I’m just waiting for him to end work.”
The scumbag has the audacity to scowl. “Oh yeah? You’re lying.”
Ibara feels a flash of panic. He pushes it down and smiles. “No, I’m not,” he says sweetly. He leans toward and tilts his head. “Why don’t you ask him?”
Ibara currently has 2 plans. Firstly, if the barista is smart, he’ll play along. Secondly, if the barista has rocks for brains, he takes advantage of the confusion to run out of the cafe and lose the man.
Simple. Surely nothing can go wrong.

“Your hair’s long now,” Jun says in lieu of a greeting, standing awkwardly at the entrance.
The Sazanami in front of him hasn’t changed much from the one of 2 years ago. Sure, his muscles are much more defined now, his skin is glowing, and there’s a certain newfound spark in his eyes - that much is obvious, but everything else is the same. His hair remains short, and unlike Kaname, he’d still chosen to go by his real name, like he’d stupidly done in their first year.
He’s almost as stunningly pretty as the famed Sazanami Jun of Eden that Kaname watches through the screen on his phone, except the guy in front of him has deep eyebags that could definitely rival those of a panda’s. His hair’s an absolute mess, with tufts of hair sticking out wildly, and Kaname would’ve teased him if he didn’t feel slightly responsible for it.
“You look horrible,” Kaname states, and points to the uncomfortable plastic chair that’s been placed beside his bed for his brother. “You can sit there.”

Is there a word more extreme than love?
Nagisa hasn’t quite figured that out yet.
He loves his Father and Hiyori and Ibara, and he supposes by the definition of ‘love’ that Hiyori taught him all those years ago, Jun should apply to that category too, but it feels incomplete. He’s missing something in his categorisation.
It can’t be the same love that he feels for the others. He’s never felt giddy when he sees Ibara walk into his room to talk about work matters, nor does he feel the want to touch Hiyori’s blushing cheeks, even though he does love their usual handholding, but it’s different.
The act of holding Hiyori’s hands and intertwining their fingers doesn’t seem as heartpoundingly scary as compared to the thought of cupping Jun’s face with his hands and landing a light kiss on the man’s cheeks.
That doesn’t seem right.
Therefore, his feelings towards Jun must be something larger than love.
How peculiar, that Jun is the exception to all these, when he’s known him the shortest.
