“You wear fine things well.”
For a moment, Ed felt as if he couldn’t breathe. The moonlight washed over Stede’s face, painting him in shadows and dancing light across his eyes. The smile he gave him was the sweetest thing Ed had ever seen, as if he didn’t realize he’d just shattered Ed’s world. A breath forced its way out of him, a sound he tried to push towards disbelief but ended firmly on the side of reverence. For so long, Ed had held himself back. He’d built unbreakable walls to keep out the danger of the night, but now for the first time, he could see the light of the morning. Stede’s eyes crinkled as he continued to smile at him, and Ed couldn’t hold himself back any longer.

It’s been two months since Stede has returned to the Revenge, and he and Ed have not yet had sex. This is fine. He’d be content just to stay by Ed’s side forever in a perfectly platonic fashion, if that’s what Ed wanted. Ed had made it abundantly clear that he does not desire a platonic relationship, though.
The real issue, Stede thinks, is that whenever it seems like it’s happening, something goes wrong.
