The truth of the matter was that when it came to taking care of people and their problems, both he and Wei Ying were of one mind. However, whereas Lan Wangji was taught to care for himself as much as other people, Wei Ying, from early age, was taught that him having needs was burdensome. He disregarded his own pain with frightening ease and offered up evey part of himself for others to use with no reservation.
Thus, Lan Wangji made sure that his husband's needs were never overlooked, his hurts never unadressed.
So it was that when they purified an ancient temple and its goddess benevolently offered them each a wish in return, Wei Ying asked for his family: for Jiang Cheng to never have lost his parents and his core, for Jiang Yanli to never have lost her husband and her own life because of him; Lan Zhan asked for Wei Ying.

Summary
Wei Wuxian and the Quad Squad (the juniors) go on an adventure in paperman form! What has caused the sudden fued between the Lan, Jin, and Nie Clan leaders? Can they solve the mystery before it’s too late?
The blackened remains of what he assumed to be a building lay in a swath of cleared pathway ahead. Crumbling sections of the building rose up from the charred ash, but nothing taller than a few meters was still upright.
What in the world… Paper-Wei muttered, surprised. A burned down building, and in the Golden Carp Towers of all places?! The damage looks to be a day or two old… Why hasn’t it been cleaned up yet? Oh yeah, Jin Guangyao must be preoccupied with the rabbit thing…
Something itched at the back of his mind. He couldn’t put his finger down on what, but something seemed off with the whole situation. There was something wrong with the remains - the way they were scattered wasn’t natural. Paper-Wei flew in circles around the debris until it dawned on him.
It was the rolling cloud insignia.

"This path harms the body. Harms the nature of one's heart even more." Lan WangJi spoke those words upon first seeing Wei Wuxian alive after the Burial Mounds, unknowing of the truth.
Wei Wuxian, though, didn't need to be told, and he accepted that he'd lost whatever he might have once had with Lan WangJi. Several nights later, in a moment of drunken weakness under the melancholic light of a full moon, he tells Lan WangJi the Truth. He'd never needed Lan WangJi to spell out his fate for him - he'd known since he walked out of the Burial Mounds alive.
But one small bit of honesty can go a long way, and Talking is far better than Silence.
