    Summary

When Caleb gets very sick, the rest of the Nein take care of him. The fever draws some of Caleb's issues to the front, but if Beau can figure out how to use punching for medicinal purposes, she can figure out how to talk about feelings. Maybe. Caleb isn't used to being cared about, but sometimes if it's masked enough, he can navigate it anyway.

"You in there, buddy? Yeah. I'm really hoping this doesn't hurt you a ton, but at this point I figure we've got enough healing magic queued up to fix it if it does." She folded his fingers into a fist, but he couldn't figure out what she was trying to do, so he couldn't help, and then when he tried to, she was yelling at him about his thumb and letting her do it, but then he had a fist and she took his wrist and pulled it forward and socked Fjord in the armor.

He felt a little bit of cold, a very little bit, and he figured out that she had too when she cursed again, but when she put her hand back on his forehead, turning his face back up toward the ceiling for a better grip, it was ice cold and felt good enough that he hummed happily in spite of himself.

"Oh," Beau muttered, "Ok. Ok, ok, ok. At least that works."

"Are you sure?" Fjord asked, "We can't do that forever."

"We can do it long enough. Jester can find something better."

    Summary

Caleb was laying, limp like a doll, on Beau’s back. Molly was reluctantly impressed that she’d seemingly carried him all the way back here. Overshadowing that, however, was the concern for their wizard. Caleb looked like he’d narrowly escaped a house-fire. His face was covered in soot and dried tear tracks ran down his ash-stained cheeks. He was pale as a ghost and even in unconsciousness, he seemed to tremble faintly. Molly couldn’t tell if that was from exhaustion, terror or an overuse of magic, though. Maybe even all three.

Or: After the fight with the Volstrucker, everyone is exhausted. Molly helps in any way they can.

At some point, they didn’t know if the reassurances they kept up all through the night were more for Caleb’s or their own benefit. Molly hated nothing more than feeling helpless, after all. So, talking Caleb through it as best they could seemed like their best option here.

After every shallow breath: “It’s okay. You’re okay.“

After every pained twist of his face: “You’re safe here. I’m taking watch, you’re safe and Nott’s right here. You’re safe.“

After every aborted reach for a component pouch that Nott had taken for safe-keeping: “Shh, nothing’s happening. Just rest, everyone’s doing that right now, you can too. Yeah, exactly like that, good job.“

“You’re not bringing him back in this fucking house!” Beau yells.

Nott snarls up at her, Caleb lying unconscious in her arms. “I don’t have fucking time for this! He might be injured, so let. Me. Through.”

Molly raises his hands and steps forwards.

    Bookmarker's Notes

The first one, the past, is a reversed Four of Wands. Unhappy families, not fitting in. Is this reading for him, for the life before the circus? Is it for Caleb, telling something of his past that Molly doesn’t yet know?

The present is The Chariot, upright. Now that’s better; victory, overcoming obstacles. Maybe this one is more literal, because Molly doesn’t know whether to stay with this little travelling group or strike out alone, but the Chariot is a good indicator that he should follow his interest in their adventures.

He smiles, glancing up at Caleb, and draws the final card.

    Death.

Molly shoots to his feet and chucks the cards back into a pile, tucking them inside their long coat and breathes heavily. The air crackles for a moment with the memory of fire, of iron-tinged blood, of friends lying dead on the floor of a once-grand tent. Past, present-

"Caduceus, you're bleeding again." Veth pointed out just before they left.

He'd forgotten about that honestly. "It's not too bad." It throbbed, but it hadn't hit any vitals. "I'll check it when we get out."

"If you're sure." Her voice didn't convey any confidence.

    "I'm sure."
