She was absolutely the kid that the teachers depised or loved, and most hated her. She'd watched with jealousy as teachers cooed over students that did not deserve the special treatment. She's grown up since then, obviously.

Zoey’s heart skipped beats like a broken record. She watched, the moment seemingly occurring in slow motion as Mira and Rumi’s eyes locked.
”You say it first!”
Zoey saw red flash her vision before she had time to process her next move.
”Fucking SHUT UP!”
Then there were no more sounds, as if the entire city had been freeze-framed. Every last demon that accompanied the rooftop was slayed by Zoey’s sudden outburst after her Shin-kal clashed with the floor. Heavy, ragged breaths filled the air as she stared down, wide-eyed and fuming.
Mira and Rumi, for once, heard her over their incessant rambling.
