“Now Randy,” he says, low and careful and right against his mouth, “you’ve gotta remember that when I tell you to do things, it’s for your own good. Right?”
Randy’s having a hard time keeping his eyes focused on just the cigarette or just on Benson — both are so close that his eyes keep making them blurry.
“Uh— Uh-huh.”
“So when I tell you you’re gonna smoke,” he continues, “that means you’re gonna do what?”
Randy’s stomach drops. He doesn’t understand — doesn’t understand how Benson making him smoke is for his own good. He knows it’s not. He wants to ask, but knows Benson will just punch him for it instead, so he doesn’t. He feels his teeth clench together; Benson’s fingers flex along his jaw, feeling the muscle twitch.
“Randy.”
He relents. He feels like putty, all his nerves spooling and tangling and getting crossed to make him numb.
“I’m gonna…” Randy swallows, feeling breathless. “I’m gonna smoke.”

When he turns his head to glance inside, eyes seeking for something to do without a customer to handle, Benson sees how his hair’s matted down to his forehead under the bill of his cap, sees the sparkle of sweat above his lip. Bradley doesn’t notice him looking, never does, but especially not now as he wavers in his spot in front of the register from the movement. His eyelids flutter a little, and Benson thinks too belatedly that the kid’s gonna eat tile if he doesn’t sit down.Benson looks away, back down to the table, squeezing his eyes shut hard for a second and pressing his thumb to the spot between his brows. The heat’s making his mind run too fucking slow.

He eyes Benson’s jacket one more time before turning to grab a dishrag and heading back to the counter. He passes by Benson mopping near one of the back tables and, this close, he’d know he was passing by Benson even with his eyes closed. He always smells like what Randy imagines the smoking section of a bar is like.That was the other tell, he realizes belatedly — the green coat smells like musty cigarettes. Rained-through and dredging up to surface all the stale smoke embedded in the threads.

Randy ran a shaking hand through his hair. “No. No, I’m dreaming. This is a hallucination. I’m dreaming. Something!” He sucked in an unsteady breath, squeezing his eyes tight and counting to ten. When he opened them, Benson still stood there in that ugly yellow sweater ruined with the splatter of his blood, much to Randy’s chagrin. His mind replayed in its eyes what it looked like to see Benson collapse to the ground, weighted down with several leaden bullets piercing his flesh. He thought about how it looked to see Benson aim his gun at others, taking the shot and standing with a faint, blood-patterned smile as the bullets sprayed guts and viscera all over the restaurant. The circle of death, he supposed.
It was funny, how his mind could change so quickly. Just that morning, he had been ever-so-grateful to Benson for changing his life. And in a way, he still was. But now, with the man himself standing in front of him, illusion or not, Randy couldn’t help but lash out. Benson had taught him that, after all.

Another Randy POV — Walking around trying to be okay with the fact that he’s okay but everyone’s talking like Benson is just a monster but he’s not and he doesn’t know who Benson is— was— but he’s sure it wasn’t as simple as that. They didn’t know how he could wipe Randy’s tears with a tender hand, same hand he beat that guy to death with, the same hand he used to push and punch Randy around but it soothed him anyway. They didn’t know Benson did all of this just to get Randy to care about his life. Randy didn’t know if that was just an excuse Benson used to break up the monotony of a dragging, dead-end life. Did Benson see himself in Randy? Is that why it made him so upset to see him barreling down the same path?
Benson is dead. So he won’t ever know.

It’s not like Randy misses Benson, he just, ya know— wanted to know him past the frenetic, energetic mania of a man knowing he was going to die by the end of the night. Benson wasn’t in the ground, unreachable, but he was exactly a four and a half hours drive away and he could be reached by collect call for about three dollars and some change in exchange for fifteen minutes of Randy spewing his heart out to a man who didn’t know much of him either but sure did leave a hell of an impression.
This one hurted a lot. Randy just wants to be okay. But he’s not ;(
