“How big was the Boston QZ?” she asks, the question barely audible over the sound of TJ’s laughter and Tommy doing the dishes.
“Big,” Joel says with a shrug. “Don’t know the exact measurements.”
“Big enough that you and Ellie might not have crossed paths previously?” When Joel doesn’t answer, just looks over at her curiously, Maria continues, “Do you ever wonder about that? If maybe at some point you and Ellie passed each other on the street and never knew it?”
Joel turns away from her, refocuses on his kid, now sitting on the living room floor with her cousin in her lap. She shoots him a grin before tickling TJ and setting him to squealing, and Joel looks back at Maria with a sad smile.
“Every day.”

Summary
Joel doesn’t remember anything beyond the outpost.
All he knows is that he was there, he lost consciousness and then he was all the way back in 2010. He woke up to his old, shitty apartment in Boston and the overwhelming feeling that he'd lost something.
Ellie. All those years leading up to and after finding her. Seemingly erased. Or yet to happen.
He doesn’t know how.
But he knows he has to find her.

Joel is somehow transported into the past, well before any of the events of the Last of Us Season One take place. Armed with the knowledge of everything that happened the first time around, he makes it his mission to find four year old Ellie, reunite his family and find a safe place for them in the Wyoming wilderness. Once he establishes himself as Jackson's leader, he gets to work giving Ellie the childhood and the family she deserves.
