"You don't have to, you know," Arthur said. "Not all the time."
"What?" came Merlin's clipped response from the corner after a moment.
Arthur turned around to face his captive. "Be this," he gestured at Merlin broadly. "Be defiant, brave...stoic...all the time. It's painful to watch."
Merlin did not answer. Arthur sighed.
"Just...just...when that door closes, when we reach the end of the day. Just allow yourself to relax for just a while." Arthur tried on a small smile, holding his palms up in a gesture of surrender. "I promise I won't tell anybody."
