To the vocal minority of Ferrix, the small handful of neighbors who insisted they would never accept him into the community, it would seem a rightful punishment for the crime of being born somewhere brighter. To Maarva, it would seem a rejection of all she’d tried to do to make him feel at home here. To him, though, it’s a way of clinging white-knuckled onto the last shreds of his homeworld that haven’t fallen through his hands.

He peers between the branches at the spiderweb, gently pushing some away to get a better view. He wonders what kind of spider it is, if he can catch a glimpse of it. There aren’t that many types in England, but--
Oh. He doesn’t spot the spider, but there’s something else trapped in the middle of the web. A large moth, its wings splayed helpless and immobile. As he watches, he sees its legs wriggle ineffectually in the air. It’s a surprisingly pitiful sight, making Martin’s heart unexpectedly wrench a bit for the poor thing.

He does not remember his father, scarcely remembers his mother’s face, but he remembers her voice, dripping honeyed and sweet like warm tea and nabat and singing lullabies the color of roses, remembers not the words she said but the sounds they made, the shape of them in her voice, the weight of them in his ears. Martin couldn’t remember exactly when or why he’d joined the Knights of the Lonely. He supposed that was by design.
Knights of the Lonely weren’t meant to last long. They were built to take blows, and, if necessary, they were built to die. He supposed that suited him fine.
But upon an assignment to escort the Watcher’s betrothed to the Kingdom of Beholding, Martin began to realize that, perhaps, there was something he was missing. Perhaps it was in the shape of a person with bright, intelligent eyes and acerbic wit, with prickly edges and a gentle smile when he thought no one was looking.
There was only one problem. He wasn’t meant to let the Watcher’s betrothed reach the kingdom alive.

Jon cannot imagine a worse possible outcome: thrust into a new dimension, alive, with Martin most certainly gone. He encounters a familiar-looking cat that seems to know him, follow him, and trust him. Given everything that's happened to Jon, surely it's not outside the realm of possibility to think that the love of his life has turned into an adorable cat.
