In the rain, Stede doesn’t even notice, at first, when lights sweep over him. He doesn’t notice, either, when a car stops next to him; he only notices when he hears the slam of a car door, followed by, “Fucking shit, there you are, Stede— Stede! Stop walking, stop—”
Stede, frowning, obeys the voice, stops, turns, finds Ed in his rain gear with his hood up, striding through the mist and storm to Stede.
“What?” Stede asks, bewildered. He’d almost think he were hallucinating if Ed didn’t take him by the shoulders a beat later, throwing a rain jacket over his head, hauling him bodily towards the car.
“Why didn’t you call me?” Ed demands.

Still smiling, Stede tells him, “I’m not going to use a condom.”
He walks Ed back a bit, and Ed goes with him, moving to scoot backwards in bed. Stede’s tucked in the sheets, fluffed up the pillows, supplemented with throws from the living room to give them more cushion.
“You’re not on birth control,” Stede adds, slow, easy.
Ed’s blood hums. He’s coaxed backwards until he’s cradled in the pillows, and Stede kisses his forehead, his nose, his lips.
“You’re starting to ovulate,” Stede informs him. Ed’s eyes flick up to meet his. “It’s on our shared calendar.”
Ed smiles, this time, and he says, “You noticed.”
“You’re not exactly subtle.”
