    Summary

After surviving the whole bomb situation at Westerberg, JD and Veronica try to go back to normal, and part of that means learning to spend the night apart—normal seventeen year olds do that. they're not constantly climbing in each other's windows. They don't even have to wonder if their partner is dead when they're not sleeping side by side.

It's a shame neither JD, nor Veronica is quite normal.

There’s a knock at the window.

It doesn’t startle her when she awakens, only confuses her—normally he’s earlier. The clock is reading 2:36 AM, when she opens the window, and sees a shadow creep in in the darkness of her room. “You’re late,” she jokes, keeping her voice to a whisper. She can’t wake her parents, or they’ll have to stop. She’s not ready for that.

And then she takes his hand, to pull him in. He’s cold. He’s shaking, “you asked me to sleep at home,” he reminds her, “remember? Exam tomorrow—or, fuck, I guess it’s today now.” He forces a laugh, even if neither of them find it funny—there’s an edge to it, not like he’s angry, nor like he’s slipping, but like he’s tacked these words over harder ones, and a corner is peeling up.

“Zhongli said we should talk.” Childe admits, shifting now after a moment or ten of silence. Xiao was content with it just staring the increasingly twitchy mortal down. “Did he?”

“Yes.” The ginger straightens now, eyes locked on him, Xiao hates how tall he is. “I— I really like your dad Xiao—“

    “What!??“

“What?” Childe blinks, face going from serious and firm to anxious and confused in a second.

“He is not my…father.” Xiao doesn’t know why saying that irritates him so much why everything feels eerily delicate and useless.

“Oh.” Childe blinks. He looks surprised. “I- really? Does he know that?”

“Zhongli is aware he is not my father, what is this line of questioning!?”

“I-“ Childe stops. Shaking his head after a moment, a truthful smile on his face. “He really cares about you, that's all. Sorry if I offended you.”

“I’m not offended.” Xiao bristles. “What was it Zhongli wished us to discuss?”

"Ajax, all this time... am I not a spouse to you?"

    "Huh?"

    Or

Childe and Zhongli were married and in love, but Childe did not know this. The reveal was not as funny as one thought it should.

    Summary

Within days, the living room has been converted into a Den (capital D entirely Childe’s idea). The windows are blocked by thick velvet curtains that Zhongli does not own. The floor is padded with blankets, coats, and Zhongli’s ceremonial robes—some of which have been spirited away from the very locked cabinet where he keeps his post-Archon relics. In the center of this mess lies a single glowing core, the radiant treasure, the crown jewel of the hoard—

    Zhongli himself.

Childe has literally placed Zhongli—fully dressed, deeply unimpressed, mildly flattered—into the center of a pile of plushies, geo crystals, and assorted fabrics and is now doing slow, territorial circles around him like a wolf guarding its kill.

(Except the kill is sipping tea and reading the newspaper.)

“You’re not subtle,” Zhongli comments mildly, brushing a bit of lint off his sleeve.

“I don’t need to be subtle,” Childe purrs. “I need to make sure no one else touches you.”

In which Zhongli, the oldest treasure in Teyvat, is finally claimed.
