Caitlyn checked her surroundings before pushing backward, sliding her right rollerskate in front of the left: once, twice, three times. Knees bent, she stepped out at a ninety-degree angle to face forward, seconds from launching herself into the air.
The second her foot left the ground, something hit her with the force of a semi-truck.
Caitlyn was on the ground before she could process what had happened, pain lancing up her hands and knees, her protective wear sliding uncomfortably against her skin.
A riderless skateboard rolled past.
It was always a skateboarder.

Let it slip my mind? The words sounded wrong, and using them almost made it sound like there was something wrong with Vi.
“You didn’t know it was your birthday?” Caitlyn asked, this time quietly.

Vi knows that her birthday is December 19. In theory. But when you spend several years locked up in a place where it doesn't matter what day it is, things like birthdays quickly slip your mind.
