    Shin nudges the side of Nagumo’s head with his shoe. “Why’d you ask me out?”

    Nagumo remains silent, tongue peeking out from its home to tap at his teeth in thought, turning the words over in his mind.

    “I don’t know,” Nagumo says finally, voice so hushed Shin just barely hears it, sounding as stunned and distinctly disturbed by the answer as Shin is.

    Then he presses back against him, sending an odd, creeping warmth up through his very core that chills with the realization that he’s telling the truth.

    Shin took a deep breath, steeling himself. "Yoichi," he said, the name feeling both foreign and thrilling on his tongue.

    Nagumo is a chronic liar. This is something that Shin knows. So when he starts calling Shin names like “baby”, “dear”, “sunshine”, and… “love”, he knows it doesn't mean anything. And he’s very good at pretending. So he pretends it doesn’t hurt. Like it isn’t pulling him apart at the seams to hear those words and know they’re all lies. And it works. Until it doesn’t.
