The way Michael saw it, everybody was born with a certain amount of possessiveness in them that they got to distribute evenly throughout all their friends and family. However, Michael only had one friend, and he was an only child whose family (aside from his parents, of course) all lived too far to ever visit. So all of Michael's designated clingy-ness got deposited into Calum. Calum, who broke tradition with Michael to hang out with Luke Hemmings.

Michael moved a little, wrapping his arms around me and clasping his hands in front of me. When he relaxed, his hands dropped to my lap. One of his thumbs was resting against my stomach, quite low, and he used it to push my shirt up enough that he was touching my skin. I felt him start to rub patterns into me, and I swore I wasn't breathing.

Michael fixed Luke with a hard stare, as if his eyes could strip away the flesh from Luke’s bones and lay all of his secrets bare. Michael wasn’t just looking at him, he was looking into him and even though Luke was fully clothed, he felt completely exposed under the other boy’s gaze. Michael was looking at Luke so intensely, like he wanted to pick Luke apart cell by cell and reconstruct him in an entirely different way. Luke didn't know what Michael was looking for, but whatever he found caused a dangerous light to flicker in his green eyes, like a wildfire consuming a forest. The motion caused Luke’s heart to clench in panic and his mind to send out warning signals to stay away from Michael Clifford.
